It’s no secret that Gracepoint on FOX is really struggling in the ratings. While we know that there’s no chance the series will be back for a second season, it looks like the show may not be on Thursday nights for long either.
Gracepoint begins when a young boy is found dead on an idyllic beach in the small northern California town of Gracepoint. The tragedy and media frenzy soon turns neighbor against neighbor as the police try to figure out what happened. The cast includes David Tennant, Anna Gunn, Michael Peña, Virginia Kull, Madalyn Horcher, Kendrick Sampson, Nick Nolte, Jacki Weaver, Kevin Rankin, Sarah-Jane Potts, Stephen Louis Grush, Kevin Zegers, Jessica Lucas, and Nikolas Filipovic.
The show is currently FOX’s lowest-rated scripted series in the coveted 18-49 demographic. It’s averaging a poor 1.0 rating with 4.09 million viewers.
The November sweeps period starts next Thursday, October 30th, and runs through November 26th. It’s important for the network financially to get as many people tuning in to their programming as possible between those dates.
As a result, it’s very likely that FOX won’t keep poorly-rated Gracepoint on the regular schedule for much longer. I suspect that they will soon announce that the series is moving to Saturday nights. Here’s why:
On the Hell’s Kitchen Facebook page, the network has posted a couple graphics that indicate that the show can be seen on Thursday nights — except the reality series currently airs on Wednesday evenings. If Hell’s Kitchen is moving to Thursdays, it’s most likely to replace struggling Gracepoint and not Bones.
Last week, the network re-aired the first two episodes of Gracepoint on Saturday night. Sports programming will fill the next two Saturday schedules. I suspect that FOX will resume airing repeats and then new episodes of Gracepoint after that — likely in pairs — until all 10 installments have run.
On the positive side, at least the network will air all of the remaining episodes and the small audience will be able to see the mystery solved.
What do you think? Do you think FOX will burn off the remaining episodes on Saturday nights? Will you still watch them if that happens?
I must admit that I am a David Tennant fan. I, like most Americans, was introduced to him as The Doctor on BBCAmerica’s Doctor Who. I have since seen him in many other types of roles and I have to say that Carter, the character in Fox’s Gracepoint, has not lessened my opinion of his acting abilities. I have watched Gracepoint every week since it started and am hooked!! This is a great murder mystery and I love the way the story is unfolding. I also like seeing that the male lead in the show is suffering greatly with his… Read more »
I sincerely doubt they are going to pull the show. The entire series was commissioned and shot in advance. The ratings were steady this week live, they are just fine in the delayed ratings. It is doing well in other countries. They are shopping it out to other markets. It wouldn’t do them any good to pull it now. I am a bit mystified by David Tennant’s performance choices. He certainly is more sedate and closed up here than in anything I have ever seen him in. His Carver is way different from his Hardy. He is usually such a… Read more »
I doubt Tennant would be welcomed even if a second series were made. The show is just about passable if too poe-faced, but it doesn’t have the lightness of Broadchurch. Tennant’s performance is the biggest problem with the show. Putting aside the poor accent, the way Tennant is portraying the lead detective is too misanthropic. He is all hard edges with a permanent frown. It’s a surprisingly poor performance from an actor who is usually very busy and can be quite light in his approach based on some of the Doctor Who I saw a couple of years ago. His… Read more »
Tennant’s character in Broadchurch smiled exactly once in the entire series. If your knowledge of David Tennant is, as you imply, based on only this and a few episodes of Doctor Who, I guess you are unaware that he is on the Board of the Royal Shakespeare Company and has been performing with the RSC since the mid-nineties. He received rave reviews for his starring roles in Look Back in Anger, The Pillowman, Lobby Hero, Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, and Richard II, among others, as well as winning awards for nearly every role he has played on television since… Read more »
I don’t like ABC programming, never have. I stumbled upon the preview for this show by accident. Proof that I love this show = talk of cancellation. This is why I’m so sick of tv. As soon as I get interested…bye bye 🙁
Let the series play out, it’s one 10 episodes!!
That’s too bad! Another good show goes down the tubes! Oh, well, maybe it’ll be replaced by yet another “America ain’t got no Talent” or some other parking lot.
I just discovered the show and I love it . Also just found out they are canceling it . Well crap!
Oops, meant to say FOX in my previous comment (and not ABC). Though we don’t really watch anything on ABC as well.
This seems to be a love it or hate it show. As for us, this is the only show on ABC we watch live every week, we immensly enjoy it; it is more realistic to real life than other police dramas. If we watch any other ABC show, it is hit and miss, which with our busy lives is rare.
As long as ABC runs the final episodes and makes it known when they will air, I will be happy.
Nah, there are just a bunch of whiny Broadchurch fans that resent Gracepoint’s very existence.
I have a feeling Gracepoint is going to get canceled after its 10 episode run is over. 🙁
I watched the UK version of this show (called Broadchurch) it was very good. US version is the same and with the same lead detective from the original show, so hard for me to watch it again (similar to The Bridge (US version) vs The Tunnel (UK/Swedish version). Both shows are very good.
I’ve read most of the comments so here’s my take on it. Mr. Tennant is not one of MY favorite actors. He could use another 50 pounds of body wt., a shower and a shave. I’ve seen transients who don’t look that awful. I do like Anna Gunn and the idea of this show & would certainly like to see this to the end just to see “who dun it.” Fox just doesn’t give any of their shows a chance, oh, wait, it does seem to keep cartoons!
You are so full of BS, the 3+overnight is really good and rising and Fox already said they won’t pull, that they are happy with it – they might put it on a different night but starting next week no football on network TV. You have from the beginning wanted to kill it because it is a remake of Broadchurch but it is not the same and anyone who watched last night knows that. Let’s be honest it is the 30 & 40+ people who spend the money and buy the stuff, not the 18 to 29’s, they spend money… Read more »
It’s hard for Grace Point to compete with Football games running the same time slot. Hopefully we can watch the rest of the episodes to see who the killer is
well at least we can see the case through to the end. I had a feeling that this show wouldn’t go beyond the original 10 episodes.
I presume they will start to burn off the remaining episodes from next Saturday at two per evening. So that is three more weeks of double episodes. Anna Gunn is really struggling in this mainly due to having zero chemistry with Tennant. His performance is so stilted that he is giving her nothing to react to. I am finding it almost painful to watch the two of them together. Fortunately Virginia Kull continues to be excellent. Goodness only knows how poor the ratings will be tonight. I am astounded that Fox isn’t pulling this from life support but it goes… Read more »
