Last month, we reported that USA Networks was considering cancelling its long-running Law & Order: Criminal Intent series. After a number of different scenarios were supposedly bandied about, the cable channel has made up its mind — or has it?
The spin-off series follows investigations of high-profile cases. The show moved from NBC to USA Networks in 2007. Up until last year, it starred Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe. This past season starred Jeff Goldblum, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Saffron Burrows.
Due to the TV show’s uncertain future, Goldblum decided to exit. The rest of the cast’s contracts expired over the summer.
USA has now decided to both renew and cancel Criminal Intent. It’ll come back for a 10th and final season of eight episodes. This will bring the series total to 195 installments.
On the positive side, D’Onofrio is returning as Detective Goren, a character he’s played in 133 episodes. Other castmembers are still in negotiations to return.
Executive producer Dick Wolf said, “Only time will tell if this is a fond farewell or a renaissance for Detective Robert Goren but everyone is ecstatic about going back to work on a show that’s a passion for all of us.”
Interestingly, Jeff Wachtel, president of original programming for USA, doesn’t sound totally committed to ending the show. He said “We have been the fortunate caretakers of this legendary series, and we plan to give it the world-class farewell it so richly deserves. Dick and his team promise to create a major event for television with incredible surprises. The plan is for this to be the series finale, but with a Dick Wolf franchise, one really never knows until it’s over.”
The 10th and final (?) season of Law & Order Criminal Intent is expected to air in 2011.
What do you think? Are you happy there will be some closure for the series? Do you think Criminal Intent should continue and return for season 11?

I’ve never watched a show as religiously as CI denofrio is a LEGEND I stopped watching after he left but now that he’s back IM BACK!!!!! My only complaint this new captain was a criminal about five years ago that G&E put away HOW IN HELL can this happen!!!
I want the show to continue way past 11 seasons! Nuff said!
Best show on TV. Vincent and Kathryn have great chemistry. I would be happy with 8 to 13 episodes a year as long as I could get my CI yearly fix and the main wonderful actors could pursue other projects. I never watched Noth or Goldblum. It was Bobby all the way. Come on USA, be smart L&O LA, no thanks.
I want a season 11.
I am thrilled that LaO: Criminal Intent is coming back for season 10 and I am begging for a season 11.
I am really looking forward to seeing Law and Order CI again_FINALLY! I dont see why such a well written series may end. I cannot believe it it ratings. Who doesnt watch Law and Order? I love that D&E are back. Hopefully,it will be for a long time coming.
great !!!
I am so glad that Goren is returning. Hopefully the series will be renewed for more than 5+ years. Great writing, great acting, great work period.
I was soooo excited to see that Goren and Eames are back again. I never stopped watching the show (I am a die hard fan of all the Law and Order Series, the newest on LA rocks now that Skeet Ulrich is gone and they brought in Alana de la Garza to play opposite Terrance Howard along with Alfred Molina to be a cop, but I am getting off point) and I really hope they don’t end the series. CI is one of my favorite and to bring back it’s two best characters just to end the series is just… Read more »
i loved the show for years criminal intent and svu are my fav dont ever want to see them go
i know nothing lasts for ever when it comes to these two shows i hope foever never comes
please dont disappoint us keep the show on plesaeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
I am happy that it is returning with the best actors on television! I want it to continue. My husband and I stopped watching it when Nichollson left. Jeff Goldblum had no charisma. Goren and Eames are the best ever. I watch the reruns all the time and never tire of the show.
I agree with all of the above….L&O/CI is GREAT, but only with D’Onofrio and Erbe. The producers and network, and whomever else is involved with decision-making, ought to do whatever they can to get D&E back and have the show continue until both D’Onofrio and Erbe are in nursing homes.
Janet,
I so agree with your comment!
L&O Criminal Intent is my favorite…….I’m excited about the eight new installments!
I am thrilled that this show is coming back and hopefully it will renew again.
D’Onofrio and Erbe were great and I just hope it won’t be cancelled again.
It is a great show!!
I DIDN’T STOP WATCHING BUT THE SHOW WASN’T THE SAME WITHOUT
D’ONOFRIO AND ERBE. I WAS SO GLAD TO HEAR THAT THEY’LL BE
BACK IN THERE ROLES! THEY ARE GREAT TOGETHER AS PARTNERS.
I’D LIKE TO SEE IT GO ON FOR A FEW MORE SEASONS!
I am so excited! I used to be a faithful viewer and never missed it. I stopped watching when D’Onofrio and Erbe left, but I still watch their reruns. As much as I like Jeff Goldblum in other roles, he couldn’t replace D’Onofrio. My only hope is that they change their mind and continue after this season.
