We all saw it coming. One of the most anticipated TV shows of the new fall season, Lone Star, has been cancelled after two episodes.
Lone Star centers around a handsome conman (James Wolk) who lives a double life to swindle investors and an oil tycoon family. He starts to have regrets and struggles to balance both lives and keep everybody happy. Others in the series are Jon Voight, Adrianne Palicki, Bryce Johnson, David Keith, Eloise Mumford, and Mark Deklin.
The FOX series debuted last week to a very disappointing 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.1 million total viewers. Last night, despite several days of buzz and campaigning to get new viewers, the ratings fell even lower to a 1.0 rating in the demo and 3.23 million viewers. As was the case in week one, many people who started watching tuned out before the episode was over. For whatever reason, it just didn’t click.
Lone Star has been cancelled effective immediately and the three remaining unaired episodes have been shelved. There’s no word if FOX will get around to releasing the remaining episodes at some point in the future.
Last week, the cast and crew were shooting the sixth installment. Production has now been shut down and it’s unclear if that episode was completed.
Lone Star’s spot will be filled by the season three premiere of Lie to Me.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lone Star be cancelled? If you watched, where do you think it went wrong?
UPDATE: Subsequent reports have indicated that there are six completed episodes with four left unaired.

Nooooooooooo!!!!!!! I just finally watched my DVR’d episodes of Lone Star and absolutely LOVED IT! I couldn’t understand why the 3rd episode on the DVR, which the DVR identified as “Lone Star,” was actually “Lie to Me,” so went looking online and discovered the idiot network canned the series after only two episodes. STUPID, FOX!!! This series was intelligent, with quality acting, and I actually found the outlandish premise believable. This is one series I actually would have looked forward to and enjoyed watching each week. Bring it back, Fox! You have 4 more episodes in the can that you’ve… Read more »
Wow! They only gave it 2 episodes! I LOVED this show. I even recorded it on DVR to watch it over. Please bring it back! If ratings were low, put it in another time slot…
I am sooooooo dissappointed! I think Lone Star was a really good show, above average acting and a very interesting plot. What are you thinking Fox? You didn’t even wait and give the show a chance. Did The Event win out and you just gave up? And you replaced with Lie to me…YUCK! Please, please at least play the episodes that you have mistakenly shelved!!!!! You just might be pleasantly surprised.
I don’t get it, how do intelligent, creative shows like this one get canned ? Original storyline, check. Solid cast, check. Fresh faced star that can hold the role, check. I feel this show had all the makings but today’s society of instant gratification just wasn’t ready for a show of this caliber. Hopefully they’ll release the remaining shelved episodes on DVD someday…
Ran across the 1st episode by accident and started watching. Couldn’t wait for the next weeks’ episode. The second episode had me hooked. Couldn’t find the 3rd episode, so started searching the web. Wow, so dissappointed. I really thought this show was going to be a big hit, very dissappointed to find that it didn’t make it.
I loved it…just now saw it was cancelled, after searching my recording to see if it had gotten erased….now I will have to wonder…what happened…..!!!!!
Bring it back! I liked it….
We are very disappointed. Half way through the first episode we were hooked. I really don’t think the advertisements did it justice and it was aired during the middle of a lot of other show’s seasons so people were already into something else. Please bring this show back or at least release the unseen episodes.
Why do I think politics play a role? Hmmmm.
Shame on FOX! A well written and acted show with tremendous possibilities. I, too, thought my DVR didn’t record the 3rd episode. I hope FOX brings it back or another network picks it up.
Sorry to see it go – I thought it was a good premise, well-written, directed, and acted. I was looking forward to seeing where it would go.MUCH better than “Lie To Me”, which is predictable and has the most unlikeable and annoying lead character (Dr. Lightman) of any drama on T.V. Hard to imagine “Lie To Me” supplants that time-slot. Did FOX even consider that poor ratings had more to do with the competition in the time-slot?
This was the best series this fall. Hopefully it will be picked up by cable and be able to continue. Fox is shortsighted and probably too conservative a network for the originality of Lone Star. Wolk had particular charm, sort of George Clooney-ish, and was fascinating to watch. I’m really disappointed it was canceled. I hope the producers will try TNT and have better luck at keeping it on the air. I never saw a promo for this program. More publicity might have helped it too.
so pissed these was canceled. i looked forward to watchin this show. i think it was just put on the wrong day.. fox people r idiots. i need to see the rest of this show.. its just like when they canceled family guy and then brought it back. i hope they do the same with this show
A great story…I awaited the next serial to see if the handsome conman would figure out how to rectify past mistakes and whether he could love two women at the same time. It was fascinating…I am very sorry it did not “catch” an audience in only two episodes–since you had 6 in the can, why not let it play out and see what happened or move it to another time frame. I am starting a love-hate relationship with you Fox–love your drama, hate your news.
The reason the show was not a success probably was that it was too intelligent. The characters had vocabularies of words of more than two syllables and the actors who portrayed them could actually act. The men were shown to be clever (although dishonest, like some politicians), and the women were somewhat interesting. Their manners were tolerable, and there were no obnoxious, overweight children in the story. The writing was fairly creative, and the storyline was a bit unusual. I looked in the paper this morning to see what else was interesting and new to watch this season, and found… Read more »
