We all saw it coming. One of the most anticipated TV shows of the new fall season, Lone Star, has been cancelled after two episodes.
Lone Star centers around a handsome conman (James Wolk) who lives a double life to swindle investors and an oil tycoon family. He starts to have regrets and struggles to balance both lives and keep everybody happy. Others in the series are Jon Voight, Adrianne Palicki, Bryce Johnson, David Keith, Eloise Mumford, and Mark Deklin.
The FOX series debuted last week to a very disappointing 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.1 million total viewers. Last night, despite several days of buzz and campaigning to get new viewers, the ratings fell even lower to a 1.0 rating in the demo and 3.23 million viewers. As was the case in week one, many people who started watching tuned out before the episode was over. For whatever reason, it just didn’t click.
Lone Star has been cancelled effective immediately and the three remaining unaired episodes have been shelved. There’s no word if FOX will get around to releasing the remaining episodes at some point in the future.
Last week, the cast and crew were shooting the sixth installment. Production has now been shut down and it’s unclear if that episode was completed.
Lone Star’s spot will be filled by the season three premiere of Lie to Me.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lone Star be cancelled? If you watched, where do you think it went wrong?
UPDATE: Subsequent reports have indicated that there are six completed episodes with four left unaired.

this is the 4th or 5th great show that has been canceled. I give up.
Very disappointed that Lone Star is not going to be able to be seen by the 4.06 MILLION people who watched the the first week and then the 3.2 MILLION people that were lucky enough to catch the second episode only to find that last night it turned into “Lie to Me”? I do feel deceived. I turned the TV off, went to bed and haven’t turned the TV on since. Thanks FOX for the strike 2 and you’re out… 5.5 million people tuned in to find “Lie to Me” on last night. I wonder how many turned off the… Read more »
To bad they took honest TV away. I hope this show comes back soon.
I can’t believe it’s cancelled. What is wrong with you people? Too busy watching fat Americans climb on and off the scale that’s what’s wrong! I wish people would start thinking again instead of being spoon fed material that has nothing to offer except voyeurism!
What a disappointment. I actually watched the pilot in a hotel as a preview special months ago & couldn’t wait for it to come out. I really enjoyed the cast & story line. Now I’m left wondering what’s going to happen & hate that I’ll never know. Why is shows like this one & Friday Night Lights don’t make it but smut & trash reality shows do? And why doesn’t Fox try a different time slot? Not to mention 5 unaired shows could also draw a bigger audience. Big dummy network execs.
I’m so disappointed that Lone Star has been cancelled. FINALLY a show with a little different premise – other than forensics and hospitals. The cast was fabulous and the story line intriguing and exciting. I couldn’t wait to see how he would pull off his double life – it could have presented so many interesting scenarios! FOX definitely didn’t give it a chance! Jame Wolk was nice to look at and very believable. I loved the show and would have been a dedicated viewer. Shame of FOX for the tease and for putting it up aginst DWTS. BRING IT BACK!… Read more »
Lone star was much more intriguing than most run-of-the-mill shows out there. What a fresh, fascinating character James Wolk played. (And he wasn’t hard on the eyes, either!)
The “con artist” backdrop provided a compelling perspective in regard to marital, family and work relationships.
I am MAJORLY disappointed to have only seen the tip of the iceberg…this show had a lot of “meat” in it, not to mention a superb cast of actors.
This is really sad. I thought it was a good show. It takes some time to get into what is going on, and the characters, but they really did not give it a chance.
I thought the show was pretty good and the characters interesting. But what do I know, I also liked Dirty, Sexy, Money!
lol. me too! again, original shows on broadcast TV are a rare breed. And they wonder why cable shows continue to siphon off audience share. It’s great shows like Mad Men and Rubicon that give me hope. ^IDEA^ maybe AMC will pick up Lone Star?
CANCELLED!!!! I can’t believe it. Loved the show. Why do you always cancel the good stuff and let the crap on? THUMBS DOWN!!!
Although James Wolk was very likeable and the show was well written, there was something that stuck in my throat about such cheerful bigamy.
Granted, there are plenty of shows about sleazy characters that are very popular. Maybe the producers mistake was in making him too likeable for his actions to be acceptable.
This show had great promise. The morons who run some of these networks need to give shows more than a 2 episode arc to see if it is successful. Whoever decided to air it against Dancing With The Stars should have his/her head examined. James Wolk was perfect for this role and should have been given the opportunity to prove himself and the show. Put it on another night.
I kept looking for the show in a different time slot. Can’t believe it is cancelled. This is a travesty. Maybe they should think about bringing it back in a different time slot not the same time as Monday night football. Sure hope it returns.
The free thinkers are simply out numbered by the herd. The herd wants the same formula over and over. The cancellation rumors didn’t help episode 2…who the hell would want to get into a new show knowing it will be on the shelf soon. **** network TV…cable doesn’t do this bull****.
Take good writing, an intriguing story, a great cast…. and forget to publicize it. What have you got? A show that gets cancelled! I can’t believe that Fox didn’t at least try it in a different time period, away from something like Dancing with the Stars, which already has a following, and a show like The Event, which has been marketed and publicized to the hilt. This could have been the next “Dallas”. There are no more night-time soap opera genre shows, and this had the markings of a great one. Maybe someone should petition Fox to try this again,… Read more »
