We all saw it coming. One of the most anticipated TV shows of the new fall season, Lone Star, has been cancelled after two episodes.
Lone Star centers around a handsome conman (James Wolk) who lives a double life to swindle investors and an oil tycoon family. He starts to have regrets and struggles to balance both lives and keep everybody happy. Others in the series are Jon Voight, Adrianne Palicki, Bryce Johnson, David Keith, Eloise Mumford, and Mark Deklin.
The FOX series debuted last week to a very disappointing 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.1 million total viewers. Last night, despite several days of buzz and campaigning to get new viewers, the ratings fell even lower to a 1.0 rating in the demo and 3.23 million viewers. As was the case in week one, many people who started watching tuned out before the episode was over. For whatever reason, it just didn’t click.
Lone Star has been cancelled effective immediately and the three remaining unaired episodes have been shelved. There’s no word if FOX will get around to releasing the remaining episodes at some point in the future.
Last week, the cast and crew were shooting the sixth installment. Production has now been shut down and it’s unclear if that episode was completed.
Lone Star’s spot will be filled by the season three premiere of Lie to Me.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lone Star be cancelled? If you watched, where do you think it went wrong?
UPDATE: Subsequent reports have indicated that there are six completed episodes with four left unaired.

For the first time in many seasons, I thoroughly enjoyed the debut of a new show. Lone Star and James Wolk are refreshing. Certainly critics weren’t wrong when they described him as the young and new George Clooney. This was a great show, good acting, full of talent and was great entertainment. Spicy! Ladies, speak up!
Such bad news that decent shows have no time to develop an audience. Perhaps if it went to FX. Other shows I have liked are in jeopardy as well, I understand. I guess the viewing public much prefers dancing star hasbeens, snotty New Jersey wantabes, and comedy tripe like 2-1/2 idiots. Kind of mirrors everything today.
I can’t believe they cancelled this show. I watched the firsrt episode and loved it. I DVR’ed the second episode, and it did not record for some reason, so I was unable to see the second episode. The mistake FOX made was putting onit against “The Event”. They should have put it on against a weaker show and it would have gotten much higher ratings. It would have gotten more people hooked, then they could have put it on anytime. What a shame.
How can this show be cancelled. It’s the best new idea and script since Fringe and The Mentalist. Unfortunately, being retired I watch and TIVO lots of TV and all the new shows. I just watched the first two episodes today and thought this show was fantastic. Jon Voight is the perfect 21st century JR Ewing and David Keith is a great bonus. The new guy Wolk plays all his characters well. The only reason this show got low ratings is beccause of the millions spent on pushing “The Event” which looks like it will be another flop like any… Read more »
I can hardly believe that Lone Star was canceled. At first I thought I would not like it because of the previews that were shown before the series started. However, it was different but I liked it. But after watching the first episode, I was hooked. I thought the cast was excellent and I was looking forward to the series. I could see a lot of twists and turns and I was looking forward to watching how the son was going to start doing good things and the father would continue to go a different direction. I am to the… Read more »
I am in disbelief that FOX cancelled this show. I highly recommended to all of my friends after the first airing, only being unable to find it on my DVR listing for the second week. Fortunately, it recorded randomly and I was able to watch the second episode and LOVED it !!!
I loved the show and wish Fox would rethink the cancelation. It’s rare to find a new show with such an interesting cast of characters and a plot that keeps you on your toes.
I am shocked, absolutely shocked that FOX cancelled this show. A new show, in a tough time slot takes more than two episodes to catch on. This show was smart, complex, with some great characters under development. After week one I could not wait for week 2. I was just getting ready to watch it tonight when I turn the tv on and “Lie to Me” is on. Come on Fox, why don’t you try airing something for those of us who like to watch story lines that actually take a bit of intelligence to follow!!
Terrific pilot – terrific new actor in James Wolk and a fine supporting cast and – how rare – a plot that wasn’t a slight variation of half a dozen other shows. Oh, right: original and on opposite Monday night football and Dancing with the Has Been and/or Never Were Stars. Give it another chance, FOX, on another night, another time. You killed an interesting show and a potential hit. AMC, where are you when we need you?
Bad decision….great show, could not even give it a chance. Could have moved to another time slot, better yet, get rid of American Idol!! Very disappointed that Fox canceled show.
I am SOOO sad to hear Lonestar is cancelled. I LOVED the show and was hooked already! Bring it back FOX!!
How disappointing to hear of the cancelling of “Lone Star.” To me it was
one of the high points of TV watching. It’s a shame that the program was
put on a night that so much is happening on TV. However, compared with “The Event” and “Chase” it far surpasses both. It would have stood out as a”best” on any night. The story line and cast were great . I surely hope that FOX will re-schedule to a different night, or that another network will
consider picking it up and running with it!
This is a horrible thing. I wrote to Fox after the first week and begged them to chage the Lone Star timeslot for fear that it would not find an audience up against DWTS and highly publicized The Event. This was the best wrtten and acted show I had seen in years.
I loved Lonestar and I hate that it is cancelled so quickly. The show was well written and well acted. I love James Wolk. I saw him in a Hallmark movie and was so impressed with his acting – I hoped he would get a show and was excited to watch Lonestar. The problem was they put a new show with a new star up against Dancing with the Stars. I have watched Dancing every season, so I taped Lonestar to watch later. I was so intrigued by the story that I would turn to Lonestar while Dancing was on… Read more »

So sad to hear this show has been canceled already. It had such an intriguing story line and I am really smitten with James Wolk. He really is adorable. A great cast too. There is so much junk on TV that goes on for year and this show wasn’t given a chance?? The only other “new” show I’ve enjoyed this fall is The Event. Sure hope that one survives.
I loved the show . this is sick
