There was an instant attraction between Ben Parr and Kate Swanson on the new CBS sitcom, Mad Love. Unfortunately, not enough viewers fell in love with the show and it’s now been cancelled after one season.
Mad Love revolves around four young New Yorkers. Two are falling in love with one another while the other two can’t stand each other — at least in the beginning. Ben (Jason Biggs) is a hopeless romantic and an attorney who’s trying to build a relationship with Kate (Sarah Chalke), the girl of his dreams. Larry (Tyler Labine) is Ben’s best friend and co-worker. He and Kate’s roommate, Connie (Judy Greer), don’t like each other but they have a lot more in common that either will admit.
The sitcom debuted on Valentines Day appropriately enough to a 3.0 rating in the ever-important 18-49 demographic and 8.74 million viewers. That was a positive start and seemed to be very compatible with its lead-in, How I Met Your Mother.

Unfortunately, the show’s ratings started declining immediately. Last week’s episode fell to a series low with a 1.9 rating in the demographic and 5.11 million viewers. That was a loss of 27% from the lead-in demo and viewership levels are naturally higher at 8:30 than they are at 8:00.
The 12 episodes of Mad Love that have aired so far have averaged a 2.3 in the demo and 6.49 million viewers. CBS obviously feels that a sitcom in that timeslot should perform better so they’ve cancelled Mad Love.
Two other freshman shows, $#*! My Dad Says and The Defenders were also cancelled today.
The de facto series finale of Mad Love will air tomorrow night at 8:30pm. Sadly it doesn’t look like we’ll find out how the love story would have finished.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Mad Love isn’t being renewed for a second season? Why do you think this series didn’t catch on?

Any possibility of being picked up by another network?
Show was funny, CBS is making a mistake
This cancellation kinda sucks especially having found out after seeing the finale. Thought it deserved at least a season 2 short run but alas no dice. It’s a shame since FINALLY the characters were starting to gell together & mesh in a way that wasnt annoying. I do truly wish they at the very least resolved the season story. BTW biggest kick to the crotch was that they cancelled the show but had tonight’s episode as SEASON FINALE…. series finale would of scared me away from the potential Series Ending Cliffhanger that bugs people years later.
CBS just Munch my show
Judy and Tyler were the show… Sincerely I hope a second season about them not Jason Biggs (too boring)… Well another show that I enjoys and CBS just flush it to the toilet
this is garbage !!! show was hilarious.. unless they do a larry munsch spinoff im gonna be really pissed.. two and a half men is terrible.. move mike and molly to 9 and keep mad love where it is!!! WHAT RU DOING CBS!! NOOO
I agree with Adam. Tyler and Judy made that show. Jason Biggs was a poor mans Ted Mosby. I love Sarah Chalke but her character was the same as it was on How I Met Your Mother and I have no desire to see Stella again. The show was just too similar to HIMYM but not as likable by any stretch of the imagination. I would have been OK with a second season if the focus had shifted to the true stars.
What Chuck said… if they had made the series about Tyler and Judy, the show would have been MUCH better.
Love Sarah Chalke but her character, like Jason, were painfully boring. Judy & Tyler were mildly interesting. Cancellation was justified.
Almost there… this cancellation with V/Breaking In is making my dream of a Reaper come back possible! Dang you Rookie Blue for keeping one cast member busy! 🙂
I just hope that the ending isn’t a cliff hanger. It’s a shame too. Mad Love is just the style that CBS likes.
Yet another show that my wife and I enjoy cancelled. CBS seems determined to try salvaging Two and a half Men, which is a show that should just go away especially since Charlie Sheen is no longer associated with the show. The writing on that series has dropped off considerably over the last 3 seasons. Well, CBS that leaves 2 shows that I watch on your network (How I Met Your Mother and Rules of Engagement), why not cancel those and be rid of me for good.
I totally agree with you. I have not heard anything about Mike and Molly being cancelled. It is a shame another network can’t pick up Mad Love and Bleep My Dad Says. Big Bang Theary is also pretty good.
I thought the show was amazing and am disappointed that JASON BIGGS WONT BE RETURNING TO CBS this fall
I LIKE “Mad Love” and was hoping to watch as the sweet couple pulls apart and the contentious couple grudgingly starts to realize how much they care for each other! Sorry that won’t be happening!
That should say season two, not sesson three.
Steven Leitner » Too many cancellations…lol thanks for the catch.
