Yesterday, TNT announced its Major Crimes TV show would end with the upcoming sixth season. Now, creator James Duff, and star Mary McDonnell are reacting to the news that Major Crimes is ending, and it sounds like a cancellation to us. Check out their reactions, below, and let us know what you think.
A sequel to the Kyra Sedgwick crime drama, The Closer, Major Crimes made its TNT debut back in August of 2012. The police procedural series also stars G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Michael Paul Chan, Raymond Cruz, Phillip P. Keene, Graham Patrick Martin, Kearran Giovanni, Jonathan Del Arco, Leonard Roberts, Jessica Meraz and Daniel di Tomasso. Jon Tenney, Ransford Doherty, Kathe Mazur, Rene Rosado, Dawnn Lewis, and Bill Brochtrup recur. The sixth and final season premieres on Halloween, October 31st, at 9:00pm (ET/PT). TNT says two-episode series finale will air on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.
Creator James Duff Responds to the Major Crimes TV Series Cancellation
On Facebook, Duff makes it clear that the decision to end Major Crimes was not his idea and was not a creative one. In addition to saying he does not want to leave the drama series, Duff says, “The actors, the writers, the producers and our talented crew would have held on as long as we were relevant.” He also goes on to thank the viewers for following Major Crimes even as it was bounced from timeslot to timeslot. Check it out.
Major Crimes Star Mary McDonnell Addresses Series Cancellation
McDonnell, who has starred as Commander Sharon Raydor since the TV show premiere, says she is not surprised that TNT cancelled Major Crimes, saying, “The writing was clearly on the wall.” As you can see in her Instagram post, below, while she is proud of what they’ve accomplished, she is still trying to make sense of the cable network’s choices.
Major Crimes: A Look at the Ratings
Although the sixth and final season of Major Crimes does not premiere until the end of October, and the show’s Nielsen ratings did drop off last year, it remains one of TNT’s strongest TV shows.
The fifth season of Major Crimes averaged a 0.38 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.19 million viewers. While that is down by 26% and 11% (respectively) over season four, it still beats out most of TNT’s original, scripted TV shows.
In season five, it drew a larger total viewership than any other original series on the cable network. In fact, Major Crimes‘ average total audience surprassed the third season of The Librarians, by more than a million viewers and the fourth season of The Last Ship, by about 1.5 million.
In terms of its demo ratings, Major Crimes‘ ranks third out of TNT TV series. It comes in right after The Librarians and the new crime dramedy, Claws.
What do you think? Are you a fan of the Major Crimes TV show? Is it ending at the right time? Should TNT have cancelled or renewed this TV series for a seventh season?
This is such a wonderfully written show! This makes me so sad that another great show is gone. Major Crimes you rock!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very disappointed that tnt is cancelling this show. Excellent cast, excellent writing, love everything about the show. Another company needs to pick this show up
WTF your kidding me
Major Crimes is a great show. TNT has moved our beloved Major Crimes around from a time slot to time slot and night to night to a timeslot where it was bound to take a viewership hit. Major Crimes story telling, intelligence and relevancy has increased consistently year on year. TNT management is to blame if the viewership fell off – not the team that put this fantastic series together. And what do they replace it with: NOTHING BUT CRAP.
So disappointed. One of my favourite shows. Still relevant. Not watching any of the so called premium tv they are pushing now.
This is the “Land of the Free”. Free of what??? We have no choice, we have to do whatever the networks want. They keep putting on more garbage everyday. This series was even better that it was before the spin off. Nice work NETWORKS.
Please renew, this is crazy…why are top rated shows cancelled…..I so love this show and everyone on it! It goes to another network so will I!!!
Another great show being dumped by the network. What a shame. What do the networks want? The audience, us, enjoy the show, the actors enjoy the show, writers too! The big question is what will replace this great show? To entice the viewers to continue on TNT? Probably nothing as good. We will see. Sad……..
It doesn’t make sense that TNT is ending it’s nr. one show. It’s the Best show out there right now and I’m sad to see it go. Hope it gets picked up on another network.
I know I come from a small country and we are only at season 5 right now. But I will be cancelling TNT when Major crimes goes off the air. The only reason I spent s lot of money every month, to have acces to TNT on my tv is because of Major crimes and the wonderful cast in that show.
Renew major crimes.
TNT has mad a horrible mistake in their judgement. Being a cop for 49 years I have never enjoyed a show that brought a reality, humor and a great cast that truly were a top ensemble. The family like group of actors are rarely found on other Hollywood sets. TNT you need to rethink this decision. Human capitol and good acting has made The Closer and Major Crimes the successful show it is. Not to mention great story lines that real career cops could relate too You should also respect the sizable viewers that looked forward to our weekly fix… Read more »
It should be renewed and if TNT doesn’t have the good sense to do so…another network should pick it up!
Not at all too sure if I can ever get my head around how the Senior Managers at TW let TNT/TBS’s President get this far with his own personal war based on his own pride. That said, I ready do hope that the show ends up on some other channel/Network/Platform.

I don’t understand this decision. Superb writing and outstanding acting. There is so much heart in this show. It is a pleasure to watch. Please please reconsider!
This is what Tony Denison had to say: Thank you- James Duff, Mike Robin, the entire writing team, crew and TNT for the opportunity to be a part of history-making television. 100 episodes of The Closer and now 100 episodes of #MajorCrimes, a first ever in television history. It has been my honor to work with this exceptional cast who made coming to the set every day like play and not work. Playing Lt. Andy Flynn for the last 13 years has been one of the greatest moments in my life which was accelerated by working with my partner in… Read more »
