Yesterday, TNT announced its Major Crimes TV show would end with the upcoming sixth season. Now, creator James Duff, and star Mary McDonnell are reacting to the news that Major Crimes is ending, and it sounds like a cancellation to us. Check out their reactions, below, and let us know what you think.
A sequel to the Kyra Sedgwick crime drama, The Closer, Major Crimes made its TNT debut back in August of 2012. The police procedural series also stars G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Michael Paul Chan, Raymond Cruz, Phillip P. Keene, Graham Patrick Martin, Kearran Giovanni, Jonathan Del Arco, Leonard Roberts, Jessica Meraz and Daniel di Tomasso. Jon Tenney, Ransford Doherty, Kathe Mazur, Rene Rosado, Dawnn Lewis, and Bill Brochtrup recur. The sixth and final season premieres on Halloween, October 31st, at 9:00pm (ET/PT). TNT says two-episode series finale will air on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.
Creator James Duff Responds to the Major Crimes TV Series Cancellation
On Facebook, Duff makes it clear that the decision to end Major Crimes was not his idea and was not a creative one. In addition to saying he does not want to leave the drama series, Duff says, “The actors, the writers, the producers and our talented crew would have held on as long as we were relevant.” He also goes on to thank the viewers for following Major Crimes even as it was bounced from timeslot to timeslot. Check it out.
Major Crimes Star Mary McDonnell Addresses Series Cancellation
McDonnell, who has starred as Commander Sharon Raydor since the TV show premiere, says she is not surprised that TNT cancelled Major Crimes, saying, “The writing was clearly on the wall.” As you can see in her Instagram post, below, while she is proud of what they’ve accomplished, she is still trying to make sense of the cable network’s choices.
Major Crimes: A Look at the Ratings
Although the sixth and final season of Major Crimes does not premiere until the end of October, and the show’s Nielsen ratings did drop off last year, it remains one of TNT’s strongest TV shows.
The fifth season of Major Crimes averaged a 0.38 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.19 million viewers. While that is down by 26% and 11% (respectively) over season four, it still beats out most of TNT’s original, scripted TV shows.
In season five, it drew a larger total viewership than any other original series on the cable network. In fact, Major Crimes‘ average total audience surprassed the third season of The Librarians, by more than a million viewers and the fourth season of The Last Ship, by about 1.5 million.
In terms of its demo ratings, Major Crimes‘ ranks third out of TNT TV series. It comes in right after The Librarians and the new crime dramedy, Claws.
What do you think? Are you a fan of the Major Crimes TV show? Is it ending at the right time? Should TNT have cancelled or renewed this TV series for a seventh season?
I love this show and the characters. They still have many avenues to explore. Why is it necessary to kill a show that is growing in popularity each passing season. If everyone knew the start up dates of shows and programs instead of the confusion that’s occurring all over the channels more would tune in.
I really looked forward to Major Crimes every week. I’m frustrated that I’m EVERY time a great show has shown enough to get us hooked on the individual people, your network is making a big mistake. I’m pleading for the show to continue!!!!!
I think it is about costs, as the actors and the series is excellent
Anymore it’s never about what the viewer wants, if it was USA’s “Chrisley knows Best” would have been Cancelled… I’m one who follows Major Crimes and never misses a show. It will be another sad exiting, of a “Great Series” cancelled way too early. Blame the Nielsen Ratings, and their current tracking system. Blame Hollywood Exec, with their dirty politics. What I do not understand is why doesn’t Major Crimes move to another network or Netflix?
This is my favorite show, I am sorry to see that it has been cancelled after thus season.
I cannot believe it’s going to end… It’s so sad to hear… I wish you could go on longer… It’s one of my favorite shows…
Major Crimes is my favorite police drama and I appreciate the quality of the cast and the story lines the show pursues. I will be most unhappy to see it cancelled.
Major Crimes is the ONLY show I watch on TNT. So, I guess TNT is one
station I can scratch off my list.
Mayor Crimes is one of the “Decent ” dramas on TV, have good writting and the actors allways deliver to us the audience, to cancel this program is BIG MISTAKE, perhaps another TV station take Mayor Crimes and continue with this excelent program with great actors that give everithing, thanks to all of them to pass a good time!!
Networks tend to cancel programs on a whim. Major Crimes is one of the best programs on TV. The acting is great and the story lines interesting. If the networks would leave programs in a given time slot, perhaps their ratings would stay strong. I think it’s a mistake canceling this program.
PS. Good Behavior really sucks.
TNT you should all have your heads examined. There’s no reason to cancel the show. Do you want to make all shows for teenagers. IIZu7l used to have a lot of respect for your station. But I don’t anymore
This is my favorite show, really upset to hear it’s being cancelled. Don’t understand why
What? This is my favorite!!! Keep it the other shows on tnt are trash!
They are making a big and stupid mistake to cancel Major Crimes, it was a very interesting and compelling series. You really got involved in the plot of the show.
I really will miss the show, I was looking to see the new season.
Please reconsider your actions of ending the series!!
