Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

Medium’s last episode should have been two hours and I was disappointed that they killed Joe off. I started watching in fall 2009 and at the time the reruns were on Lifetime during the night. I put them all on the DVR and watched every single spisode. I had seen a few when they were on but I got hooked in 2009. I never missed an epidode and watched them on demand as well as when they aired if I was home.
Sad it had to end. If it had to end at least we had a sad but good ending. Wish it could go on forever.
Unbelievably depressing, very upsetting. The cast I’ve loved for 7 years wasn’t there (the kids) Scanlon and Kynn had one line each- and having Joe die was too much for me. What I loved about the show was seeing a family that loved each other, a husband and wife passionate about each other. Now we get Joe dead, the family destroyed. And Allison lives 41 years more alone, never finding another companion, with only her faraway children to call her- she’s in some nursing home at the end (and by my count she should only be around 71-75 years old).… Read more »
I was watching last night and relized i was watching the last episode. its sad to see it end. i loved the last episode it was a real tear jerker.
My husband was killed in a car accident when he was 37. We had a set of 10 year old girl twins at the time. The end of Medium had me in tears for hours after. Everything that she said to Joe at the end, I said to my husband as he lay dying in the street. Every argument she had for him to not be dead I also had. When she kept crying to wake up from the nightmare, I also cried that for years after. The end of Medium was extremely emotional for me. The writers and actors… Read more »
The last episode of “Medium” teased me as viewer, creating in me a certain sense that this great series will have that lousy stereotypical ending — Joe’s not dead; he alone survived the plane crash; he is unable to contact Allison because he has amnesia. And then, all seems hopeful – Allison finds Joe in Mexico, and they live happily…but wait a minute – a twist in the plot: Joe awakens Allison from her dream of denial, tells her he died in the crash, but that she will carry on just fine without him. And then years later when she… Read more »
Will miss this show terribly but am satisfied with its finale. Each character was given the chance to say good-bye. Loved the fact that they waved good-bye! More finales should take note of how Medium said good-bye to their fans with CLASS!
The final episode was bitter sweet. We looked forward to watching every friday night!! Going to miss it!!!! farewell to the cast & brilliant writers… good luck to you all!!!
The best series wrap up i recall ever seeing–at least the writers had the respect to give the loyal fans closure. too bad it rarely happens with other shows. i loved it–reminiscent if “the ghost & mrs. muir” so i cried!. i will miss it.
I thought the series last episde was the most ambitious episode to date. I also believe it was one of the if not the best written Medium episode ever written. It was poignant in a way that most other episodes weren’t. It had a kind of ,”Six Feet Under” ending which was nice to see on network TV. The writers could have taken the easy way out and killed Allison or one of the kids from the drug lord, we’ve all seen it before. Instead they had a random act, a crash kill Joe and have him come to her… Read more »
Now there’s officially nothing worth watching on Friday nights. I have no desire to suffer through Jim Belushi in a dramatic role as the replacement show. I’m really going to miss Medium!!!!!
I cried throughout most of the hour. My husband died suddenly and without a goodbye while on business, too, almost nine years ago. I still miss him dreadfully and the emotion portrayed by Allison (Patricia) was way too real. I have three children as well. Now how coincidental is that. My heart still breaks. Like her I have no one to talk to like I could my husband. Very good show, heart wrenching and hopeful all at the same time. Good job cast. Great job Patricia!
I was shocked. This is my favorite show and will miss it.
I saw no commercials to watch the “Final Episode” – why not? It might have shown that the show has loyal followers and re-think cancelling the show.
I hope another network picks up the show. Allison could awake from a dream and there will be Joe lying next to her. She will tell him that she does not want him to go to Hawaii on his planned business trip and all will be well. Please, say that the writers did not really kill Joe off. He was one of the best characters on television. I feel so sad and let down. This is exactly why I hate TV.
After watching and loving Medium since it started I was very disappointed with the end. I wish the best for the entire cast. It saddens me that I lost my two favorite shows within such a short time. MEDIUM and GHOST WHISPERER I will miss you, at least I have the DVD’s.
