Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I was not just disappointed in the ending, but if it was renewed I would not watch it! What made the series was not just the supernatural, but the loving relationship that held the family together. After all these years I was left depressed…
I was really saddened by the final show and the series ending. It was aparticularly well-acted, well-written show. It had all the ingredients for an entertaining show–mystery, humor, love. The love between Allison and Joe came across as truthful, as well as the interaction of the family–I’m going to miss this exciting, stimulating, intelligent show.
Please bring it back and make this last show a bad dream!
This really was the most disappointing ending to a great show! They could of end the show with the episode of Allison dying from last season. You can’t tell me that she couldn’t of had a dream to stop Joe from getting on the plan. Come on, to the fans who have watched the show from the beginning this was a let down. Not to mention Joe’s (dead) father who lead him down this path to work at his current job. Remember all the episodes with Joe’s career path. They could of had a much better ending.
I loved it and I will miss them all – This show was the highlight of many of my weeks.
I’ve watched Medium since it began and have found it very interesting and thoughtful. I suppose all television shows must end sometime, but I think this show was far superior to many other current offerings. It’s sad to see a really good show like this one end. I always loved it when Allison did those philosophical talkover Intros–no one and no show does that! I loved the way this final episode ended–highly intriguing, complicated dream realities that fooled us as they did Allison. Great kiss and song to end this much beloved show. This is one I’ll miss for a… Read more »
I had absolutely no idea that Medium was ending. My daughter and I LOVED this show and always looked forward to watching it. Did I miss something? Was the fact that the show was being discontinued even mentioned recently? Considering we didn’t even know this was the last show made us question what was up while we were watching it. They should have lead up to this final episode in some way and also should have been 2 hours. I was disappointed on so many levels. I cannot understand why all 3 girls, who played Joe & Allison’s children throughout… Read more »
Although I was a faithful viewer I figured that Medium was living on borrowed time. Last season’s finale with Scanlon’s wedding seemed like a possible sign off point. At least everyone got a happy ending. The series finale, while sad, had a great story twist — a fitting tribute to a show whose premise includes dreams vs. reality. Thanks for a great run. I’ll especially miss Joe: TV’s most put upon husband!!!
My wife and I really loved Medium and watching the daughters and the family grow. However the episodes in the last season had been getting a bit bizarre so we should have expected something like this ending. I felt like I was watching LOST at times and the endings of both shows had some similarities wherein we saw the “dead” reunite. It was an OK, heartfelt ending but somewhat disappointed like all the Lost fans were for that series.
I did not like how it ended. Joe did not have to be killed in the show….that was not a happy ending to a very good series!
I think it was way too negative and out of character with the show. First, they kill Joe, then Allison ends up alone and jobless. Finally, she dies alone! It was terrible! I cried so much!
Hated the ending. I have loved Medium, and was truly hoping for an ending that would be as good as the series. I did enjoy the last few minutes when we could see the cast saying their good-byes.
I have been a Medium fan since the beginning. I’m sad that the writers had to kill of Joe and Allison. I was hoping that they would leave it open for a reunion show. It left me feeling very sad. I agree with danelle, it should have been two hours.
MEDIUM should not have ended. It was a very different type of “crime” show. Creative and original. We need more shows like this on t.v. I know many fans who are sad to say see it end. Bravo to the cast for a great run! Hopefully there is a spinoff down the road….
The last episode was good, but I am so disappointed the series was canceled, it was my favorite. Now there are no reruns on any channel. Please bring it back
From the time the girls were young, Allison wore a bob hairdo and Joe had long hair, I have watched this show. As I watched last evening, I realized this must be the finale. I can’t tell you the sense of disappointment I felt. If I wasn’t home to watch the show, I made sure it was taped to watch later. There is going to be a tremendous loss not being able to watch the girls grow up and intereact with their parents. Bridget, Ariel and Marie were part of everyone’s family. They and Joe and Allison will really be… Read more »
