Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I really hate to see it end. My husband and I always loved to watch Medium. We enjoyed all the people in it. It will be missed.
I’ve watched and loved every episode…. except the last one 🙁 Surely the writers could’ve come up with something better than to fast forward to a supposed ending….
I’m definitely gonna miss the series.
Loved the Medium. Will miss it greatly. Will there be reruns. Pleeze.
Great ending for a great show. Enjoyed it for seven years. One critic said and I agee, like watching a real family with ups and downs. A couple who loved each other and their children. Problems with money, marital relationship, kids school etc. Thanks for the ride with the little quirky talking to dead people to keep us on our toes. Enjoyed and will miss it.
I almost turned it off because didn’t think I could bear Joe being dead. One of the best shows on Television. However, all the drug cartel stuff was a dream Joe put into Allison’s head to let her know she could go on, be a successful lawyer, write books. That 7 year skip ahead and drug cartel episode was all a dream. But the 41 year skip ahead wasn’t. And they reunited. However, I thought it should have been done in two hours, to prepare us. And has anyone wondered at all why Allison didn’t dream about the crash and… Read more »
i had no idea it was the last show, so this was a shock..
it was a great ending to a great show.. we watched it since
it began and we will miss it just as much as we miss LOST.
why do the good shows always get cut????????
I haven’t watched the show for a while, since it moved to CBS and Fridays. But I watched the last 3 episodes on Demand. David Arquette guests to fight a devilish take-over. Allison is kidnapped, and Marie begins to show signs that she is clairvoyant also. (Possible developing story line if show was picked up for another season) And the Finale. How could they end it like this? When “Without A Trace” ended, the episode fit the usual formula, and then ended with photos of the missing persons for the entire run. MEDIUM could have done the same thing —… Read more »
I have watched Medium since the fist show. That was the best finale ever I cryed my eyes out! It was my life on TV. That is my dream since my parents were killed in a plane crash, believe it or not 41 years ago. I have always love the way the writer have written for Joe. Keeps him funny and real. My daughter and I will miss this show it is a shame they are taking it off the air. Loved the goodbyes from all the charaters.
Hated it. Wish I had stopped watching back when the show was originally canceled. If I had known what was coming, I would happily have walked away.
A travesty . . .
I’ve watched the show faithfully for the past 7 yrs, and although I am sad to see it end, I was very glad to see that they gave the show closure before ending the series. Many series are just discontinued without notice and without any closure of the characters or story line.
I was glad that the show gave the viewers and fans enough respect to end the show with a final eposode rather than just yanking it from the line up.
I have loved the show since it first aired. The actors have been natural, fresh, and authentic in every way, even if some episodes have strained credulity. The final episode was disappointing in every way — too glib, too pat and too absurd. I understand the need to tie up loose ends, but not this way. What were the writers thinking? The show is based on a real person. The show should have ended with Joe and Allison in bed as usual, with a dream, perhaps, about the future, but more realistic — no disasters, no seven years later and… Read more »
I loved this show, I loved everything about it. With all of the awful shows on primetime that I don’t watch, this one was a keeper. It always happens when there is something worth watching, it will get cancelled because it’s not drawing in enough viewers who like quality tv. And they should’ve made it a two hour finale, it felt too rushed and crammed into the time slot for me. So sad to see it go……
When my daughters & I sat down to watch Medium last night, we had no idea it was the Series Finale. We did not like the way it started out with Joe dying & I told my girls if he dies for real, I’m no longer watching the show. Imagine our surprise when we realized at the end of the show that it was the last one. Did not particularly like the way they ended it. We loved the show & are very sorry to see it go. =(
I’m sorry to say I didn’t know the series was cancelled. I had some health problems and it slipped past me. When Joe came back as a ghost to tell her he had really died in the crash, It was really sad. I’ll miss the series. I loved all the characters. Bridgett was my favorite of the girls. My husband didn’t like it though, so I recorded it and watched it alone. He said her character was really boring. I guess others thought that also.
I am very disappointed that this was the last episode. Medium has been my absolute favorite show since it began. I have never missed even 1 episode. I feel like I have lost my best friend.
