Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I hope another network will consider keeping this show on the air. I guess ABC is the only one left. I loved this show. Seems like the good shows are always the ones they cut, yet they keep all the teen shows. Not all us are teenagers.
It likely won’t be picked up again, especially by one of the broadcast networks. In reality it probably shouldn’t have been run again on the regular CBS television stations. It would have been better to have put it on a “cable” network like USA, which is owned by NBC, where it wouldn’t be so critical to carry a large audience every week. This was the exact reason Monk was successful and eventually attracted a lot of followers. I guess a good analogy would be a professional sports player being sent down to the minor leagues because they weren’t playing well… Read more »
I have to say Medium was one of my favorite shows when it originally ran on NBC but the show seemed to loose it’s original focus even the last couple years it was on NBC. The original premise of Medium was she was suppose to see deceased people either when she was awake or in her dreams and often times dreamed how crimes were committed in the past, present or future and helped solve them or prevent them. When they made Allison do odd things, like she was possessed or something, they started loosing my interest. I know that the… Read more »
I will miss this show and the quality of T.V. The ending had a depth that warmed my heart and the realizations expand my awareness when I revisit it in my mind. I feel respect for the script writer and for the cast.
Loved the finale. I agree with others, at least it HAD a proper finale. And a good old-fashioned tear-jerking one, at that.
The casting of the three young actors was amazing. Ariel, Bridgette, Marie: You couldn’t take your eyes off of them! Allison and Joe Dubois, a tv couple for the ages. Farewell to a great show.
HATED the final show. Joe should not have died. This just demonstrates that CBS really didn’t have an understanding or grounding of this excellent family show. I feel like I’ve lost my neighbors. They shouldn’t have canceled the show.
We are very sad to see Medium come to an end. The last show was excellent and caused tears here. We hope more thought will be given to bring this program back. We are without a doubt going to miss it.
I thoroughly enjoyed the conclusion. I liked that we saw what happened to all the characters instead of ending the show and not knowing how the three girls grew up. It seemed fitting for Joe to die and come to Allison and told her to go on with her life. The ending was great where Allison finally dies and reunites with Joe.
I even enjoyed how each individual character said good bye. Bravo for a great conclusion.
I have always enjoyed this show, so much so that I own seasons 1-6. Medium has always been unique in portraying a realistic family. Though the storylines were sometimes flawed, they always wrapped each episode up in such a surprising way that I continued to come back for more. Not only was I unaware that this was the series finale, but was shocked at the episode’s departure from the norm. Seriously? What benefit was there in killing off Joe? Why did we need to see anything in the future? I would have been 100% satisfied having the series finale entail… Read more »
It was a real disappointment to see the series end. I enjoyed the show and felt the characters all worked well together. There was not a bad one in the bunch. I think it’s a sad commentary on our society that reality-type shows go on forever and ever, but the good series crash and burn. Granted, Medium lasted for seven seasons and I suppose it would have to go – sometime. But in my opinion, they cut it too early. There likely could have been several more successful seasons if the show’s producers would have allowed. But thank God we… Read more »
I am torn. I loved this show, although I haven’t really kept up with it this season because of working midnights. I knew this was the finale so I made sure to watch it. Oh my goodness, broke my heart. I have always loved the relationship between Allison and Joe. It was so realistic. I liked the ending, but then again I didn’t. I really wish they would have not killed him off. They did that on Ghost Whisperer but at least he was able to come back. 🙁 I will really miss this show. It was one of my… Read more »
I agree that, given all the dream time-traveling, this finale should have been a two-hour show. I watched the finale a second time just to get it straight in my ageing head what was a “real dream” and what was “real real” and so forth. (Appreciated the finale more the second time, by the way.) I think this was a satisfactory ending, although the scene in which Joe, playing a rather deadpan (no pun intended) “ghost” (as one person put it), was gut-wrneching, sad, and a real tear-jerker. I’d have prefered a more upbeat ending, as another poster suggested. I’ll… Read more »
Medium has been of my favorite shows for a long time. I loved that the characters were so real and that they weren’t all “Hollywood perfect.” I agree with some of the previous posts that the finale was disappointing, especially for those of us who have been watching it for the past 7 years. I was also shocked that it was cancelled due to low ratings of only “7.1 million viewers a week.” With all of the crap on tv (eg. Two and a half men, etc.) it’s sad to see such a great show go.
I hated the ending. The writters can never have a show about a happily married couple with a family, without killing off someone. I like this show because even with the paranormal part, it depicted a happy family that loved each other and treated each other with respect. I think it was the last one on TV. Good Bye to the DuBois!
I loved the show, but I hate that the show has been canceled. It is one of my favorites and I will truly miss it. Please bring it back.
I am sad that CBS has cancelled this show and chopped the season, leaving large holes in the plotline. I will miss watching every week. Please don’t replace with another “reality” show. Life is full of reality as it is. Television should be entertaining .
AMEN!!!
