Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I absolutely hated the final episode…..
I was VERY upset last night when I not only realized that Medium has been canceled but the finale was soooo depressing. Please please please some other channel please pick up this show. I’ve watched it every season since the beginning. One of the best shows on TV and I have a lot of favorites. sniff, sniff
I am so saddened that Medium is over…..for good! I know it’s silly to be effected so deeply by a shows demise but the ending was so emotional that it left me sad all day. I think they should have ended it on a more upbeat note. Why not flash forward to how well everything worked out with Joe’s job and Allison’s law degree. See the girls grown with families of their own. Why did they torture us with Joe’s plane crash and then build our hopes up that he was still alive and these two kindred spirits would be… Read more »
Oh….UGH. I wasn’t home last night, and just watched my recorded episode. Medium was my favorite T.V. show. I used to talk about the latest episode all week long, and always looked forward to the next one. I HATE how CBS ended the show. It was COMPLETELY awful. I am pretty sure that I could have written something better. CBS, please hire me. I can’t be any worse than your current writing staff!!!!
I am replying to Amanda’s note. I was struck by her comment that her sister had died three years ago from ovarian cancer, as my own sister died three years ago from ovarian cancer. My sister and I also watched and discuss episodes of Medium. In the years before she died, I think she was intrigued the idea or the possibility of the idea of communicating with those who have gone before us. I think about that now, and wonder. I do question why they chose to end the series this way, as it apparently does not follow the real… Read more »
All of television is slowly devolving into a giant garbage dump, just like the one the big trucks haul all our trash to every week. You can pretty much throw a dart, at random, at the TV schedule, any time of day or night and be almost certain to hit something that has no value and stinks. The cancellation of Medium is just one more step in the march to make all of us just as stupid as most of the useless crap on TV today. The show itself was obviously hastily done, as if the producers had no idea… Read more »
I loved watching Medium and was disappointed when the show was cancelled. I didn’t like that Joe died in the final episode. I would have prefered the show end on a happier note. They lived happily ever after……….
This was a terrible way to end the show! It should have ended happily. I am so disappointed and upset! I got so attached to this family. It was my favorite show and had no idea it was cancelled. It wasn’t even done well and the real Joe didn’t die, did he?
Ridiculous!
I was shocked to hear Medium was cancelled! I loved, loved this show. Cried my eyes out at the finale and wish they hadn’t had Joe die. My family will miss this one!
After watching Medium last night my thoughts are still stuck with how it ended. Allison made me cry so much when Joe showed up to say she would make it alone without him. My heart was so broken when she said that she couldn’t live with out him and to please not leave. Today my heart hurts to see this show end. It was the best show ever since it started with her first episode of helping that officer in Texas find the killer of the little girl. My husband was making fun of me because I cried when I… Read more »
I am still in shock!!!!!! I have watched every episode with my entire family… it was a tradiotion and for them to end it this way, it makes me think the viewers really do not matter it is all about them making as much money as they can… We who are faithful viwers just have to accept whatever the network decides to do….
I totally agree with Gloria. My daughter, who lives in another state , told me about the ending which I hadn’t yet seen and I burst into tears as she told me what happened! I am not a cryer but having lost my own husband, I certainly enjoyed watching Allison and Joe together and was almost hysterical when I heard they killed him off and he told her she could go on without him, like my husband said to me and it is not true. I ache every single day for him. I wish they hadn’t ended the show at all… Read more »
This was absolute poppycock! I cannot believe they ended the show that way! I had no idea it was canceled! Last year when it got dropped I had a heart attack, but then jumped for joy to hear it was coming back! I currently am stationed in Germany, and do everything in my power to try to see the show…it’s one of my shows I was NOT willing to miss coming over here…..and to my dismay this evening was a severe disappointment! What is this, Ghost Whisperer? Where we just kill off the men??? Why couldn’t it have ended on… Read more »
I agree! I was shocked they cancelled this show! I was just as shocked when they cancelled Charmed! I am very disappointed in this netwqork… I can not believe they ended it like that…. Sheiz!!!!!! Truce!
Beautiful ending, but sad. I had no idea that the show was ending, so sat staring at the TV after the credits. Was that all? Nicely wrapped up.
Me too, Jane–I had no idea it was ending until the very end…the whole thing made me sad… It was nicely wrapped up, I guess, but I don’t want it to go!!!
I have faithfully watched Medium for seven years ans enjoyed every eposiode, but this final eposoide was a big let down. Joe dies come on. Medium was an excellent show. I just don’t get it. Very disapointed fan. I am still angry about the network canceling Ghost Whisperer, now Medium. I just don’t get it.
I was a huge fan of the show, so when my husband informed me that it was to be cancelled, we started anticipating what might happen in the final episode and hoping they wouldn’t do anything out of character for the show. My husband is not a big fan of the show, but still watched when I give him the green light on when I thought it was an exceptional episode. Unfortunately, after the initial scene when his plane was crashing, I uncharacteristically fastforwarded to see if they would really ruin the finale for me. I had hopes when I… Read more »
I am going to miss Joe and Bridgette. Joe is a hunk and Bridgette is a hoot.
At least this show got to give it’s fans a final ending..not like the Crap CBS pulled on Ghost Whisperer..no hint that is would be cancelled and then boom, it was…It should have remained on just as long as Medium..it was just as good as this show , and the two on back to back friday nights was a good combination..now all you see in stupid CSI or old Tom Selleck! YUK!
I agree with Brian. At least they gave Medium a great ending instead of just yanking it off of the air with no ending, like Ghost Whisperer. I loved both of these shows and I hate the fact that they are cancelled. Thanks a lot CBS!
Our whole family has been watching medium together for the past few years and we all unanimously HATED the finale, not to mention our disappointment that the show was cancelled. We thought it would have been great to end on an upbeat note, with Allison attending her first day at law school, and then fast forward to when she is the DA and successfully using her gift and her legal skills together. There could have been a mystery around a fellow law student thrown in there. And of course, Joe would have been supportive all along the way, and we… Read more »
It sucked. I can’t believe it is over. There are not many creative shows on regular tv and now one more of them are gone. i made a point of watching this show every week!
