Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I’m a viewer from england who has been watching medium religiously since it came out, and have looked forward to it every week…i didn’t realise it was ending, but watching the credits on this episode, it became obvious that it wasn’t going to follow on…how can they do this to Joe and Allison? After everything they have gone through, they decide to kill him off?? I can’t believe the writers are so out of touch with what the audience want, and with the characters themselves – it was an absolute travesty to end it this way…i have bought every series… Read more »
I watched this show from the start and haven’t been impressed since it “moved” to CBS. In fact, I stopped watching it regularly. I did see the last show and was very disappointed. There were so many ways to end the series. In my opinion, the writers chose very poorly. I think the actors were all great and they deserved a much more uplifting, well-written ending. I look forward to seeing the actors in future roles.
CBS is now a 3rd ranked television station for our family and many other families we’ve spoken with. Canceling Ghost Whisperer and Medium was the end of many of their viewers who will now turn to other media. We have gravitated to FX, TV Land and several other of the less known stations due to their more creative new series. Reality shows are not entertaining and there are too many of them out there. Cheap pay for cheap entertainment, I suppose. Their advertisers should protest.
The Medium was my favorite show . I was greatly disappointed to learn it was cancelled
on the evening of the show. Bridget was my favorite but all of the actors were excellent. Bring it back!
probably the most poorly written episode but i ate it with a spoon, and cried out loud at the ending. i loved those people. i give them all the leeway they need to go away in peace.
but to lose allison and keith olbermann in one day??!!! way to much for me.
This last episode made me cry. It was a great story and show. I felt bad for the Marie and Brigid and Allison that Joe had passed. I cried the entire episode. A 5 hankie. We all want a happy ending and in the end Allison is with Joe.
it was the most satisfying and beautiful ending to a show ever!! How creative to show that at the end they would be together. LOVED IT. I loved that they paid tribute to each character at the end. It was amazing. Anyway, who thinks it was sad was not paying attention. Everyone is going to die. We got to see it.
I never missed an episode of The Medium in 7 years. It was a good quality show and I was grateful to CBS when the saved it from NBC’s chopping block two years ago. When I heard that it was ending, I was disappointed but recognized that maybe it was time. However, the final episode was terrible. Loyal fans like myself were already disappointed to see it go, but to end it on such an unnecessarily sad note was unacceptable. The writers should be ashamed of themselves.
I have been watching this show from since it started. I love this show. I have never missed an episode and if I did I would watch it on my computer. I love the Character’s. I loved Brigid from the beginning when she was a child and watched her grow to a teenager. Little Marie played by twin sisters. I just loved them all. I watched each child grow into lovely young adults. Especially Sofia Vassilieva. What a lovely young lady she grew up to be. I loved her in My Sister Keeper. I love Joe and Allison. I loved… Read more »
I loved Medium! It was a show I originally found by accident, but I thought it was inovative and somehow “realistic”. One thing I loved the most was the “realness” of the characters Allison & Joe and their marriage. I didn’t love the finale and I didn’t hate it either. I agree that I’m glad the writers “finished” the lives of the family. But true to the series itself, there was a twist. I think that was part of the charm of the show. Bridget was my favorite daughter and I’m really gonna miss Joe……very hot! Goodbye Medium. See you… Read more »
The Medium was my favorite show. I was disapointed to learn it was cancelled. Why???
All of the actors were Excellent-Bridget was my favorite. Bring it back.
Can’t believe I will not have a chance to see The Medium again. Did not realize this was the last show of the series. All these years the writers have turned out a top notch show but last night’s show was not their finest. I felt the show deserved to go out a winner. Did not witness this last night.
I too was TOTALLY SHOCKED to see Medium end!!!!!! COME ON CBS!!!!!!!!!! You bring on new shows like Mike & Molly, The Amazing Race, and especially The Survivors and you toos out another show like Medium (and Ghost Whisperer)!!!???? There are MANY of us that watched Medium faithfully! Some of us watch it online, at different sites and tape it for later….. What will you have next… another stupid reality show??????? CBS IS A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT! You probably don’t even read your comments and don’t really care what the public wants! Thank God for the cable networks!
I love The Medium and have watched it faithfully all seven seasons. The finale was sad at times and different than I thought it would be and yet entertaining too. I must say that the kiss they shared at the end was worth waiting 41 years for. I felt like standing up and cheering! I’ll really miss this show.
I had no idea that the show was cancelled, so settled in to watch one of my favoriye shows only to see Joe die and thats the end? Sorry CBS, you missed the boat on this one.
