Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

My husband and I faithfully watched this show together from the very first show. We were/are deeply saddened that the show was cancelled. The only question we have is, why?
How sad to see Medium canceled again. My family has watched this show from the very first season. How sad as well that TV stations always seem to cancel shows that are appropriate for our children to watch!!! Guess Medium didn’t have enough language or nudity in it to survive.
I was so disappointed! I had no idea the show was being cancelled. I kept waiting for her to have another dream and was totally shocked when it ended. I like to have an hour of edge of your seat with a happy ending. My husband and I always felt so bad for Joe always being awakened in the middle of the night. They had such a good marriage and Joe finally was having a job breakthrough. It all just left me feeling like something was missing. The Medium deserved better.
I really hope that the cancellation can be reversed. It is a really good family show even though sometimes it gets a little bit bloody.
I didn’t watch the show because I was interested in the real Allison Dubois! After watching “real housewives” forget her and all her Nastiness, such a shame she’s so fed up, maybe she shouldn’t work in a malevolent field it’s inevitable you become what you repel. I watched it because I LOVE Patricia Arquette & Jake Weber. I am so sad that I can’t look forward to the show everyweek. Wish they would change their mind because both actors can truely stand on their own and have proven it in spite of the show. If the show can’t go on… Read more »
I wasn’t aware that the show was canceled when I watched the final episode. I loved the roller coaster ride of the plot ending in the realization that not only had Joe died, but the show had as well.
I didn’t find the episode sad. I found it melancholic, the bitter-sweet longing for a lost love. Then, the reunion of the eternal lovers. I think it was romantic.

I was shocked the Medium was being axed. I watched that program faithfully every week. I am still in the hopes it will be picked up by another network and they will show that it is her husband that will be the one to have had this terrible dream. I know so many people young and old that loved the show.
I am keeping my fingers crossed.

What the heck? Are you crazy – cancellling Medium? I had no idea…I can’t believe this was cancelled..it was a unique show, different, and it got cancelled. Most tv shows today are horrible and it seems to be the mainstream to cancel the good shows and keep the horrible ones…who the hell in charge….whoever it is, is out of touch or completely an idiot….bad move on part of network….unbelievable! Cancel Medium but keep the likes of the stupid reality shows? I do not get it! I VOTE TO BRING BACK MEDIUM
I hate that the show is over. It is one of my favorites. They are all lovable, good actors. I especially liked Bridgette. So cute. Much better than some of the stuff on!
I loved this show!! I am so sad it’s over. Although I don’t like the fact that Joe dies, I still think it was an interesting way of doing the final. The show always surprises me as it did this week!! I will miss watching the Dubois family… Love all of the characters and I think they all did such an awesome job at playing them. Favorite scenes were always when poor Joe is trying to sleep and Allison waking him up! Awesome show it will be missed
I am crushed to know that Medium has ended. It’s been on my DVD schedule for the whole seven years and I’ve even kept the reruns. Allison, Joe and the girls were like friends of mine that I was happy to see each week.
With Law & Order gone now, this means that television is truly becoming a wasteland of crap: silly crime lab dramas and nonstop reality nonsense. I’m going back to reading books again and looking for foreign films. I haven’t adjusted yet to the BBCA but i’m working on it.
I thought the finale was a good ending. It was sad that Joe died early, but the finale wrapped up any loose ends and we saw Allison and Joe together again in death. I liked the show – sad, but a good way to permanently end this fascinating show. I will miss it.
oops, meant CBS obviously – i’ll blame it on being too enraged with the cancelling of this amazing show 😉
I have been a HUGE Medium fan since the start. I HATED the ending. Having Joe die was a poor way to end a successful show. Shame on you CBS.
