Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I ACTUALLY BOO HOOED BECAUCE I LOVED THIS SERIES. IT WAS VERY FAMILY ORIENTED ..COMPASSIONATE..AND ALMOST FAIRY TALE STORY BOOK MARRIAGE AND FAMILY. EVERY ONE OF THE ACTORS/ACTRESSES
PLAYED THEIR PART VERY WELL. I AM GOING TO MISS THIS FAMILY AND ALL THE GREAT EPISODES OF ENTERTAINMENT THEY GAVE TO ME. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
Very upset, I second what all others said. All responsible for the cancellation of Medium, NBC as well, and now CBS, are NUTS!!!!!! You messed with its established time slots, which day of the week, etc. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!! Stick it CBS for this I have turned your station OFF, for GOOD!! Stick you stupid JERKS!!!! For Medium AND Ghost Whisperer, though I admit, when GW fats fowarded 5 years with that goofy brat kid who looked 10 instead of 5, they screwed themselves. But DON’T say that Mediumd did, I never missed an episode of medium. Pathetic… Read more »
My husband and I have been faithful fans of Medium since its first episode and have enjoyed watching the family going through the growth of “normal” (more-or-less) families. My husband has always sympathized with Joe : “Poor guy! Never gets a full night’s sleep!” It’s been a fine 7 years and we were totally unprepared for this unexpected finale!! Not happy – this is a nightmare! Why (CBS) did you do that????????????
i have watched every single episode of this show. it is one show i NEVER Dvr’d because I couldn’t wait to watch in on Friday night. It was my favorite show, more than ever. I returned to work recently and have been extremely busy. I didn’t even get to DVR it due to these basketball finales. So, when I pulled it up On Demand I didn’t even notice the series finale warning. I’ve seen Medium have some horrible tear jerker shows ( her brain tumor) and wasn’t a bit concerned when Joe died. No big deal. Then, I started to… Read more »
This was a wonderful show. I am so sad that it ended and that Joe DuBois died in the season finale. Jake Weber played a wonderful character. It was refreshing to see a smart, loving husband, always supportive of his wife. I think he and Patricia Arquette represented TV at its finest… showing a good modern-day marriage… a happy couple, even as they struggled with two careers, finances and raising a family. The scripts and shows were always smart and clever… not the same old police show drama. Every member of the cast was superb. I hope to see all… Read more »
I did not realize this was the finale, so it was a complete shock. I have been a fan of the show for its entire run and will miss it. I don’t think they should have killed Joe off…very disappointing ending in my opinion.
I get it. I understood it. Sure, I was shocked to see the show and not know ahead of time that it was the final episode. Watching it, I asked me husband if the show was being canceled and to our disappointment, it was. We always recorded the show and watched it on the weekend. I appreciated the emotional rollercoaster that the show took us on. It was a rare show that showed the love a family could have. The love of a man & woman, Mother & Father, parents and children and even sibling love. Too many of today’s… Read more »
Does anyone know how to start a petition to get it back? Not ready to see it go at all. The ending doesn’t matter – it can all be a fast forward/dream, etc.
Please – don’t end it – it’s a VERY good show.
AGREE. A happier note to end this great show would have been a lot better. All the stuff that’s on TV and of course one of the few shows u can watch with your family is POOF. What a shame. The cast were all great and knowing there is a REAL Joe and Allison in the world is the only good thing to come of the terrible ending to such a great series.
OK,, had no idea the season was over… I should have suspected something when my husband was willing to watch 2 episodes he had already seen….. the last 2. I get that Allison and Joe meet in Heaven…. fitting for Medium, however, alone in a nursing home, why not at a family reunion in front of all the clarivoyant children so they could see their mom and dad happy together…. piss poor ending…. could have been better.. however, glad they gave us an ending fitting for Medium…………………… cranky it is over,, loved how fabulous of a husband Joe was to… Read more »
i’ve watched from the beginning and am really upset at the way they chose to end it. it would have been better to have shown how happy they end up with all the girls grown up and joe & allison together. but to be honest, not surprised. especially after seeing the “real” allison dubois on “the real housewives of beverly hills”. OMG – she is so opposite of the allison we all knew & loved on tv. i mean polar opposites. to see the actual allison dubois in all her glory (or not) watch the RHBH episode “dinner party from… Read more »
My wife and I could not have written this last night after the show. For those of you out there who have faithfully followed Medium for 7 years, you know what I mean. In fact, I still don’t know how to articulate the feelings she and I both share about the show’s cancellation and, especially, the final episode. Let me just say we are both 59…will be turning 60 this year. There really isn’t a lot on TV we watch except Criminal Minds and Big Bang Theory. There are a few others but nothing to match Medium. I lost a… Read more »
i will miss the show watched it for a few years did know it was canceled til the last minute cbs is canceling all the shows what is going on.
Boy, I tell you what, CBS! You’ve done it agan. What are you thinking? Another one of your best shows gone, just like that. I’m still not over you finishing off Dr. Quinn, now Medium? Really? Why don’t you get some real people on your decision making team to keep the good shows alive? You had better step up to the plate and give viewers something even better and leave it on if it is one of the best! Truely!
I totally agree with you. I am still upset with the cancellation of Murder, She Wrote and Dr. Quinn. Now they cancel a great show like Medium. It deserved to have a 2 hour proper send off.
I think this ending was horrible and so does my Mom. We both have watched Medium since it started. Why in world would the writers want to kill Joe and Allison off? Why didn’t they just bring Joe back alive and let the show end there? This has ruined the whole series. We put up with all these reality shows that are stupid and they do they not only take a good show like Medium off they have to kill those too. Very DISAPPOINTED
