Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

Death comes suddenly and without warning. You may or may not get a chance to say goodbye to a loved one. I thought the ending of this show was brilliant. I had no idea the show was ending and at first it would be a fascinating plot twist to see how the Dubois family would deal with the death of Joe. Little did i realize when i saw the characters poignantly saying goodbye in actuality did it resonate that, oh my gawd, this might be the series finale of this show i have watched for 7 yrs. Death came suddenly… Read more »
I have been watching the show from the first episode. I am so disappointed that this is the end of one of my very favorite shows. Really? This is it?
I loved the show-MEDIUM, and am very upset that CBS has taken off TWO of my very favorite shows, Ghost Whisperer being the other one. I thought the writers did a WO
NDERFUL job on the ending of this show. I cried my eyes out when Joe died, and Allison did a wonderful job of acting. I will miss this show, and all the characters. Hats off to the entire cast, and crew for a wonderful 7 years. THANKS for the memories.
Don’t cancel this show! I watched this show as a fellow family member. It comforted me. Why would you cancel such a great thing? Stupid move! Bring it back for more seasons please! Lola M.
Oh my God. I’ve heard all of our programming is taking hits by Sony, and overseas powers that be who think we “crass” Americans only like television programs such as Family guy, The Simpsons, or stupid “reality” programs. I cried when Everwood was cancelled because it was a beautiful program. I cried when Joan of Arcadia, and Avalon were cancelled, both beautiful programs. Ghost Whisperer being cancelled didn’t bother me as much because the story line had been disjointed for awhile. But Medium is my favorite program of all time. The actors are so brilliant they do not even seem… Read more »
This is the first time I’ve ever written to express sadness over a cancellation. Medium had a wonderful storyline every week, along with great characters. The writers were wonderful and “spot on” from start to finish each week. Medium was one of the shows I never missed – even on vacation! Too many shows roll along so fast – you don’t get a chance to really get involved with the story/characters before the hour is up. I loved the relationship Allison and Joe had together, and with their children – nothing over the top, but loads of caring – always… Read more »

I hated it!!!! I’ve been a faithful viewer for the total of 5 years and never saw this coming I kept thinking it was just another dream and was shocked at the end. It really sucks!!!!!!
I had no idea this was coming. We always DVR the episodes so I saw no previews to warn me. I am sooo sad. I have been following Medium from the beginning. I will say that in the past couple seasons I have been able to predict how the shows would end. But I didn’t mind..I loved the whole little family so much. I did not like this ending, maybe it was because I kept thinking she was going to wake up at the end and it was all just a big dream. But nope! Pretty sad about that!
I have been a fan of Medium from the first episode. I don’t believe I ever missed it. I loved the show. The writing was excellent, the acting excellent and so believable. But the writing really sucked with an AWFUL ending like that! Anyone who has been a faithful fan of any show NEVER wants to see a terrible ending like that! You want to see an upbeat ending that will stay in your mind forever. Like the great ending NBC gave the Friends show with Ross and Ratchel. That’s what fans want to see! But this????? First you give… Read more »
I can’t believe that’s it! I didn’t know the show was cancelled. My husband and I watch it religiously and when they rolled the final goodbyes and the hubby said that was it for the show, I freaked out. I had to read the synapsis again and my heart broke when it said “series finale”. I’m still in disbelief. As for the finale, it really sucked that Joe died, but I’m ok with it. I think I’m too sad about the whole cancellation thing to really focus on whether the finale was everything I hoped it to be. 🙁
We didn’t know WHAT we were watching and why the episode was so cofusing and full of plot holes-and off-character like Allison’s unethical legal behavior-and then when the “family” walked off the sound stage and we realized it was final episode, my husband and I looked at each other and simultaneously said, “that sucked!” Between Medium being canclled amd Keith Olberman getting kicked off MSNBC, I’m just going to play Angry Birds or read novels annd TV? Fugedaboutit!
I was quite disappointed that it was cancelled but not surprised. I was upset how the final show ended. i did not like it.
I always watch the show, sometimes with my daughter. For this to be the last episode, it seemed very open-ended. I was very disappointed, specially finding out this was the last episode ever. It was so rushed. It felt like every bit of a bad dream. It seem like the finale episode was just part one of something that was left to be completed. 🙁
I had no idea tha show was cancelled and was very sad to see the show end. there are so few good shows to watch and I so looked forward to watchig medium. Now I don’t know what I’ll watch now, I so loved the show.
