Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I knew that CBS had cancelled Medium, but they said it would be a satisfying ending for the show’s fans. That ending was lifted from “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir” I’m not sure how killing off Joe at such a young age makes for a happy ending. Being reunited in death is nice, but the years in between (41!) for that family are really bad. Plus, why didn’t Joe or at least Joe’s father’s ghost drop in and confirm Joe’s death?–like he came to warn her when Joe’s mother died a just few episodes ago. I think the writer’s should… Read more »
Loved “Medium”. Sorry to see it go off the air. CBS does this all of the time–ending series that people love (i.e.) Cain, Three Rivers, etc.) The last episode was very disappointing.
There’s a mistake in the recap. Lee Scanlon isn’t the police chief, he’s the “chief of detectives.”
In other news, the episode was a horrible ending that crapped on loyal views and the real life DuBois family.
@GN: Thanks for catching that.
I bawled. I absolutely bawled when I realized that Joe did actually die and then again when they were reunited after death. It is now four days later and I still cry whenever I think about it. I am so sad that the show ended, I love how it ended and I am so terribly sad about how it ended. I am going to have to watch it again, I think, to accept that it really is over.
I loved the Medium and the whole great family togetherness. I will miss them but I was grateful for the cast saying their good byes. I thought the writers were great through all the seasons.
I loved theMedium and the last show, have to ask way is it all of the good shows go off before their time? It had good actors, writers, and spark.
Great cast I will miss them and the show.

SINCE I HAVE CLAM DOWN. I SEE THAT I LEFT OUT A FEW WORDS AND I AM SORRY. BUT I LIKE MEDIUM I HOPE THAT IT DOES NOT GO OFF. I HOPE CBS WILL KEPT MEDIUM ON SO. THEIR VIEWERS CAN KEPT ON ENJOYING WATCHING JOE AND ALLISON AND THE GIRLS.PLEASE CBS DO NOT CANCELLATION MEDIUM. ROSE
So sad this show is over. Watched it tonight not realizing it was the last show EVER! The ending was so sad 🙁
Shame on you CBS for cancelling Medium. You suck! I think any homeless guy off the street could have written a better final script. What a disappointing joke! Come on, killing off Joe & letting Allison die in a rest home. Wow, what ever happened to creativity? To the cast, thank you for such great work! My wife & I love you all.
Medium was a great show with good family values, so of course CBS had to cancel it in such a way that it could never be brought back to life. It wasn’t my favorite show, but was defintely in the the top five. I thought that the writing was excellent, and even though as a biblically fundamental Christian I know that ghosts don’t actually exist, I could suspend that disbelief and thoroughly enjoy the series. Despite the shameful way in which the series was ended, I still hold the entire production staff, crew, and actors in hight regard. CBS, on… Read more »
I am so disgusted and disappointed in the series finale of Medium. How can CBS ruin such a good show with such a crappy ending? There were so many ways this could have been done tastefully, believeably and with integrity. Wonder what these morons will do when the end of NCIS comes? Blow that too??
I was so disappointed to know the show was ending. A good family show without the filth you see in so many shows. What a great little family the Dubois family was. The little middle girl was so great in her role. And Joe and Allison were such a great couple and great parents to the girls. I can’t believe that a network takes a show like that off TV. There were already too few good shows to watch. That was a very favorite of mine. TV is full of awful stuff like Survivor and other reality shows that are… Read more »
it was awful, especially the fact it was so far off from the acutual family they protray. it was really awful, i can gaurentee they did not consult the real Alison before writing that. plus it was heartless to the viewers they didn’t just pull heartstrings they cut them. who ever is responsible for that episode can rot in hell
I love Medium, but I was not a fan of the last episode. Not good. Stupid story line. Bad writing. Eh.
I absolutely LOVED the ending. I have been a devoted Medium watcher, and I daresay this could have been (for me) the best episode I have ever seen. To have a television show impact me in a way that left me sobbing hysterically means SOMETHING. I was still crying when it was over. I was shocked, and touched, and heartbroken, and thrilled, and hopeful. Even though its only a tv show, what a wonderful idea that there IS a happily-ever-after, even after such an unspeakable tragedy. To “know” that you can be reunited with the love of your life is… Read more »
