Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

At least I know I don’t need to replace my TV that was just hit by an electrical surge. There’s nothing appearing on it now I will take time to watch. Let’s see…what do we have that sticks around? Oprah? Sports. More sports. Endless sports. Cheaply made insulting stilted cartoon parodies of odd families that are distinctly racist, or perverted. The weather. Celebrity and entertainment news. Repetitive crime shows too numerous to count that all blend into one ball of blood, bad guys, and perversion likely all filmed on the same city streets or same dark, wet, gloomy sets. Alien… Read more »
AMEN
i had no idea this was the last show ever. i loved it!!!! i did cry at the end but it was a great show with morals and great family issues ( of course the physic part is fictional) but i loved the show and watched if from the 1st show to the last.
I didn’t know the show was ending, so it was a shock. I did not like the ending, I wish it could’ve had a… happy ending. I don’t get why Joe had to die. I wouldn’t be happy anyway, since it was my favorite show, but it would’ve made me happier if it had ended happier. I hope this was just a dream and there will be a season 8. 😉
So so sad to see this series end. The ending was terribly sad but I thought a great way to end the show. I’m still just so sad that it’s over.
Great ending for the season. To bad it was truly the end. My wife and I watched faithfully each week. Great writing with very professional actors.
My husband and I were so shocked that it was the last episode. We thought everyone acted very well on the Medium. I was very upset to know the marriage was over through death. I wished the show would continue with everyone on it. I did like the way the actors got to say goodbye – that was unique. I am very sad to say good bye though.
First of all I was totally sad and shocked that they cancelled this show, I loved it. And the way it ended was awful.
My husband and I are huge fans of the show, and were so surprised that the show has been cancelled. We love the relationship between Allison and Joe it’s warm and supportive just like a real couple. I really enjoyed the scenes with their daughters and the storylines of this well written series. The mysteries and crime storylines just added icing to the cake of this wonderful show. I hope that CBS reconsiders and lets Allison wake up from this bad dream and into a new season. I would miss the Dubois family so much!
Opinion? Not so good.
Always had great stories. Best was watching the girls grow through the years. Good final show and a smartly done farewell by the cast.
The last episode of Medium was a travesty! I don’t have a problem with the fact that they killed off Joe. In fact, the “7 years later” segment really intrigued me; I thought the producers were tweaking the status quo in such a way as to give new life to the show. The actress playing the youngest daughter as a teenager was terrific, and I liked seeing the old characters in fresh roles. I thought – Wow! This could really give the show a new lease on life, and leave the door wide open for creative developments. But then –… Read more »
I hated this ending. They killed off the greatest dad and husband on television just to set it up for a “Titanic” type ending. A great kiss at the end does not erase 41 long years of Allison living alone. This made me have a nightmare that my own husband died in a car crash. It makes me so angry at the writers that forever after when I think of “Medium” I have to think of this huge downer and remind myself that it’s just fiction.
The last episode was very well done and was a complete shock to me also. I will miss this show very much. Best of luck to the actresses and actors in the future. Sure wish it could have continued
I did not like the final episode at all. I would’ve wanted to see Allison and Joe and their family live happily ever after. I cried for half an hour after the episode. :(((
I had no idea the series was ending, so the episode came as a complete shock to me. I really, really loved these characters — I think the marriage portrayed by Patricia and Jake Weber was the most real & geniune marriage shown on television. I was crying hysterically as I realized they were saying good-bye… I felt like Allison, saying “Don’t leave me!” Personally, I thought it was a beautiful way to end it for us, the fans. Loved it, loved it.
