Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I can’t believe medium is over. I loved this show watched it from the beginning. We loved the family and their characters. We loved Joe and his patience with allison.
so sorry to have a great show with great family values leave the air. what a contrast to the junk ON TV. The other actors were very good and I hope they are all doing OK.
Very disappointed to lose such a great show.

I really liked the finale. It reminded me of the finale of Six Feet Under, which had the best TV show ending ever. I heard last fall of the cancellation, and Patricia Arquette said she was excited that the writers were going to “burn the whole thing down”. I’ll miss the show too, but really enjoyed the last episode.
PLEASE BRING IT BACK
I hated the ending. They could have at least made it similar to what is real in their lives. Why would they think we’d want to see Joe die and then Allison and especially when it’s NOT happened? We all felt cheated. We don’t understand why it’s ending. Bad ratings? Not enough $? What? No explanation.
I had no idea the show was ending. I got a little confused at the end. Yet I think they did a very good job and at the way they ended the show.
A sucky ending. Even ripped off the finale of Six Feet Under.
Once again one of the best shows on TV has been cancelled. I realize all things must come to an end but really? That is what you thought would be a good ending?
I was totally shocked when I watched the last episode, because I had no idea such a great show was ending especially in mid-season. My family and I have watched this show faithfully since it first aired. It was one of the few shows left for a family to enjoy together. We are greatly saddend by the ending of this series. There is really nothing good to watch on television anymore. There are way too many “reality shows” on these days, which is not what we want to watch. I will say this however about the shows finale; that for… Read more »
. I will miss the show, my husband and I didnot know that it was ending. It was done very well. Glad that Allison and Joe are doing well in AZ. Good Luck trying to fill the spot MEDIUM will be missed.
I just can’t believe it is over. This was “the show” I looked forward to watching every week. It is actually the only show I was loyal to watching. I will miss the Debois family.
The show will be missed. It was an intelligent portrayal of the supernatural and the importance of family.
I don’t watch much TV at all, but LOVED this show. Can’t believe they took it off the air. So therefore, I hated the final episode. I didn’t know it had been cancelled so I was confused throughout the entire show and thought that it was all a dream. Very disappointed with this cancellation.
I had no idea the show was ending, therefore I was very confused with the way things happened. It didn’t really hit me until the end of the show that the show was ending forever. I am very disappointed. I loved that show and my husband was even becoming interested. It will truly be missed. It was a wonderful story with a wonderful down to earth family. I appreciated the way Allison and Joe were such a deeply in love couple and that their love was shown without all the sex that seems to be added to shows today. I… Read more »
Was aghast at this ending!! Such a wonderful show — thought it should have gone on for a few more years — as it has won several awards — acting superb — had 6 million plus viewers??!! Don’t get it — I believe they made a BIG MISTAKE– HOPE THEY RECONSIDER OR IT COMES ON ANOTHER NETWORK WITH ALLISON ONLY DREAMING THIS HORRIBLE END. Thank God they are all alive and well in AZ.
I and my husband were also very shocked this was the last show. We both cried we loved this show and so sad it’s ending. We both thought the ending was VERY well done.
