Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I’m not one to get hooked on a show or TV for that matter, but Medium had staked a claim on my heart. The family was so real and believable. There were no super models or high fashion statements. This is what made it so easy to watch and digest all the while knowing it was based on ESP. As with anything worthwhile, it had its run and I am glad we had it as long as we did. It will greatly be missed. I wish only the best to the wonderful actors and their future endeavors.
I loved Medium and use to look forward to watching it. I was very disappointed by the last episode. Why did they kill off Joe? It was heartbreaking. They should have left it with him having amnesia and her finding him through her dreams. It would have been a little truer to the show as well. Anyway, the best of luck to the cast and crew and thanks for 7 great years.
I did not realize that last friday was the “last episode” so when I sat down planning to watch yet another great evening of Medium, I was soooo upset as I saw Joe being killed in a plane crash and then I realized that something was going to happen to my favorite friday night show. The writers are to be complimented and I will truly miss this series.
PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!!!!
Much like the entirety of Enterprise season 4, I shall be deleting this episode from memory 😉 When I think of all the great episodes they’ve had over the years, this one just seemed like a tearjerker cop-out. And as someone else pointed out, it was a shame that two of the three young actresses who’ve played the kids for so long didn’t even get to appear in the final episode.
WhAt!!! I am so upset…this was the best show! Perhaps a spin off that includes the lives of the 3 daughter would be considered! What were they thinking? Did the show receive poor ratings? I think NOT!!!!
The networks depend on the amount of viewers for a given show, for example CSI which is shown in 200 countries, has about 2 billion viewers world wide, but may have lost a small percentage the last year or so. Even a show with such a large following would be cancelled if CBS saw a significant drop in the viewers. CBS is a business, a business must make money to survive. Heartless as it is, money is the bottom line. I agree with the majority of comments regarding the last episode, the writers could have and should have been more… Read more »
I loved the finale! That being said — I can’t believe the series was cancelled. It was by far one of the better shows and we faithfully taped it every Friday night and always looked forward to watching.
We liked the ending very much – it was a true happily ever after, and I think they were trying to tell us that a passion of Allison and Joe’s magnitude lasts forever. We were great fans of the show and sorry to see it go. My only problem: why do psychics always miss the really big stuff? I mean, wouldn’t Allison have had some kind of dream warning them about a plane crash? Anyway, they’re all very talented actors and I look forward to seeing them in future projects. In the meantime, if you want to see Patricia Arquette… Read more »

Still thinking about the final…very profound! End of a great show!
Sorry to see the end of the show, particularly the way it ended. Joe was my family’s favorite character. You did manage to bring us to tears. Wholesome shows are few and far between. Good luck to all the cast.
We have watched Medium from the very beginning and were sad to hear it was canceled. But having said that …. the series finale was a compleate let down on all levels. We wish they hadnt even had a finale show, then to ended it the way they did. Not only that, but it was a slap in the face to the two kids that played Brigette and Marie. They were not even in the show. What a real let down!
I was so disappointed with Mediums series finale. After sticking with it all these years they kill off Joe?
I am very disappointed that medium is over. It was a very good show.
i was very sad to find out medium was ending. yes, i liked the end and cried so hard when i found out that joe was really dead. i will truly miss this show and so looked forward to watching it on friday nights. if there is a tv god somewhere please bring it back on another network. it was a great show and i loved all the charactors. they blended so well together. life will not be the same without joe and allison and their kids for me. BRING THEM BACK!!!
I was so sad and shocked that it’s over. It’s the only tv show I watched regularly! I miss the charactors and show. I loved this show!!!!
I didn’t like that Joe died, but liked that he waited for her. What great real life charactors.
