Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

That was the dumbest ending ever! I would have liked to see the Texas police chief coming to get her help for the last time type thing. But to kill Joe off and then see Ariel with a huge pregnant belly and such. It was just too creepy for me. I think they should have left it so a cable company could pick up the series. They have a huge fan base. I’m going to miss them all very much. Especially the girls. Bridgette was my favorite I think. Though, I love them all. I hope they get work soon… Read more »
I wish there didn’t have to be a final show. It was a great series and I just don’t get why it ended. The final show was heartbreaking but it fit with Allison’s gift and the love she shared with Joe and family. SAD to end a good show.
It was a good closing, although I hated to see the series end. We have watched all seasons. Thanks to all.
Finale was wonderfully done; however I will greatly miss the show! Been one of my favorites since it first aired.
Allison can’t dream about those close to her which is why Joe’s death was not known before. I found the ending very sad. It was weird the way the wrapped up not only the show but everyone’s lives! Leave something to the imagination!
Such a great show on so many levels. Always interesting, heart warming, spine chilling… a rare gem in the swamp of tacky tv shows out there at the moment. I’ve watched it from the very first episode and always looked forward to the quality acting and script writing. I really enjoyed the last episode, with the sneak peak forward in time, and of course shed a few tears over Joe. Nicely wrapped up. Although I’d love to see more episodes, I don’t think they could continue on from that ending. I’ll miss Medium greatly. Thanks for the ride!
too sad some producers don’t recognize a hit. i loved the show, now it is gone. there is nothing interesting to watch anymore. pity…
First NBC cancels the show, then CBS rescues the show and makes Friday nights more enjoyable, now CBS lets a popular show end and even kills Joe. Let Allison wake up from a horrible dream!!! Wake up CBS.
I will miss the Medium so much. I have been a fan with my sister who use to call me on the phone and we would call during the commercial breaks and compare thoughts. Now she passed away a little over a year ago, and we always said that if we could contact each other, like on the Medium, we would. Alas, I have had several dreams of her, and because of the Medium, I do not fear her contacts in my dreams, they are like very nice visits of my sister. I was in shock when Joe died in… Read more »
I hated how the show ended! I didn’t know it was ending and I was so sad to see it end. I hope lifetime keeps playing all the reruns becuase it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and I wish it hadn’t ended!!!!
I agree with so much that was already said. I will miss this show a whole lot. It was my favorite. So different then what’s on the air now which all seems so copycat. It did renind me of the Six Feet under ending too, which was fine with me. Hope to see all the cast again soon. A spin off would be great.
The finale episode was fantastic, the only two things I hated about it, it made me cry (I hate to cry over shows, I feel so stupid) and I also hated that it was the last Medium. What am I going to watch? That and Dog are the only things I watched on a regular basis. This bites….I am going to miss Medium so much. My husband hates it too, I think he had a crush on Allison.
I wish I could say that this was a good ending, but there cannot be a good ending to the show Medium. This has been my favorite show since it came on the air. It really made me sad to find out that this was the last episode. Why? There seem to be many fans who share my feelings.
Please bring it back. It is a wonderful show. The finale was awesome though, it was done perfectly, but will miss it so much
I LOVED Medium and I’m going to miss it very much. I looked forward to watching it every Friday evening. I’ve never missed an episode since it first aired. I was very surprised and very disappointed that the show has ended. I thought the finale was well done. The final scene with Allison and Joe made me cry. They had great chemistry. I wish the crew the best of luck in their future endeavors. They are very talented and will do well in everything and anything they do.
