Last week, NBC cancelled The Mysteries of Laura after two seasons. But not all is lost. Showrunner Jeff Rake recently revealed his season three plans to Deadline.
The crime drama starred Debra Messing as an NYPD detective who is also raising her young sons as a single mom. The series also featured Josh Lucas, Laz Alonso, Janina Gavankar, and Max Jenkins.
Season two of The Mysteries of Laura finished on a major cliffhanger, with Laura (Messing) trying to stop her ex-husband Jake (Lucas) from proposing to his new girlfriend (Jenna Fischer). Sadly, Laura arrived just a moment too late, and the season ended with Jake getting engaged.
Now, Rake has revealed that season three would have opened with Jake and his new fiancée breaking up:
In the Season Three premiere, Jake’s girlfriend Jen (Jenna Fischer) would return the engagement ring to him. Knowing Laura wanted Jake back, Jen couldn’t stomach being a home wrecker, having grown up in a household with a similar dynamic between her own parents.”
Rake added that season three would have explored why the two got divorced in the first place:
With Jen out of the way, Jake is open to reconciling with Laura. But since honesty has been the biggest stumbling block in their marriage, he insists that Laura first hear the full details about his affair that led to their divorce two years ago, (We’d establish that Laura never knew the identity of Jake’s mistress.) Laura comes to discover that Jake’s tryst had been with a prosecution witness in a homicide investigation which Jake and Laura’s two precincts worked on together back in 2014.”
Additionally, the season would have featured a series of flashback episodes:
This revelation would trigger a run of flashback episodes in which we see this investigation play out. In these episodes, Dan Hauser (Enrico Colantoni) would have reprised his role as Captain, Laura would be partnered with Billy (Laz Alonso), Meredith (Janina Gavankar) would be partnered with visiting detective Jake, and it would be Max’s (Max Jenkins) first days and weeks on the job.
After these episodes, back in the present, Laura would sleuth out that Jake’s mistress had lied in her prosecution testimony two years ago to help an unaware Jake close his case. Realizing the convicted killer may in fact be innocent, Laura and Jake have to reopen the investigation. And even after the case thread resolves, the mistress would linger as an unwelcome presence in Laura and Jake’s life.”
What do you think? Did you watch The Mysteries of Laura? Is this how you imagined season three?
Thank you Jeff rake, for sharing that. I needed closure and I got it. The writing in Season 2 was so amazing, I thought the network would surely pick up another season. Hope emmys recognize the talent.
Also enjoyed the addition of Debbie Ryan.
Who decides? Why don’t you listen to the viewers. This show was totally entertaining and the cast was perfect. How about finding a network that respects viewers opinions
Please bring it back, we really enjoy that show
We loved this show and can’t believe one this great is canceled. But that is what happens to the really good ones !!
NBC sucks you give us a good show and take it away two years is not enough time this show was awesome and they should bring it back.
PLEASE FIND SOMEONE TO BROADCAST SEASON 3, well the show period! We Want MOL!!
GLAD ITS COMING BACK ON!
It isn’t coming back on. Unless I misunderstood, Mr. Rake is revealing how the storyline would have played out if they hadn’t cancelled the show. Another goid show bites the dust…good thing I have Season 3 of Peaky Blinders on Netflix to watch. It seems the three networks (ABC, NBC, CBS) are still on the road to losing their smarter viewers behind for intellectually challenged shows like Scandal, Chicago Med, and How to get Away with Murder. I can’t wait for shows like Longmire, The Fall, and House of Cards to return for another Season on Netflix; Ray Donovan, Billions,… Read more »
Same here. The networks homogenize their shows and they don’t take the fractured audiences into account. In the pre-cable days the numbers would have been huge. There are so many options now that, unless it’s football, you’re never going to get those numbers. Networks can’t go to the same places that cable goes. The Walking Dead, & Game of Thrones are 2 series which have huge ratings, but would never have been able to be made on network TV. Netflix not only has a strong following for the series which had been canceled on network TV, but has new series… Read more »
I am totally on yr wave leanth. Haven’t seen pesky blinders – will add to my list. Have you see black list?
Oops. I mean Orphan Black
Tired of having the rug yanked out from under shows that should still be on. Now it’s a trust issue. Talking about you….ABC and NBC. Makes me not want to start a new show with you, because you cancel the good ones!
Extremely disappointed that the show has been canceled. You have a great show with an amazing cast.
Omg what is wrong with NBC and ABC??????? Seriously yaij6
Really, after all the waiting and nail bitting we your loyal audience does not get to see one of our favorite shows with a wonderful cast come back for a lot more seasons. Who picks and chooses. So dissapointed. We were faint full to the end and would have been there for many more. Love to all the cast..
