After being on the bubble for several seasons, CBS has finally cancelled The New Adventures of Old Christine. There’s a chance that it may be saved by another network but odds would have been better if this had happened in previous years.
The New Adventures of Old Christine follows the challenges of Christine Campbell (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) , a neurotic single mom who has a hard time finding a relationship and juggling her responsibilities at home and work. Others in her life include her low-key brother, Matthew (Hamish Linklater); best friend and business partner, Barbara (Wanda Sykes); young son Ritchie (Trevor Gagnon); irresponsible ex-husband, Richard (Clark Gregg); and his current love, “New Christine” (Emily Rutherfurd). Often popping up to make “Old Christine” feel even more incompetent are “mean mommies,” Marly and Lindsay (Tricia O’Kelley and Alex Kapp Horner).
After being part of CBS’ Monday night line-up for two seasons, Old Christine was used to help establish a second comedy block for the network on Wednesday nights. Unfortunately, the experiment wasn’t a big success. Old Christine was barely renewed last season. As there had been in the past, there was talk that ABC might pick it up if CBS had actually cancelled the show.
This season, Old Christine’s numbers have gotten worse and CBS decided to abandon the Wednesday night comedy hour. As a result, the network decided to finally cancel Old Christine.
In past years, Old Christine was attractive to ABC because they weren’t having much success with their own sitcoms. This time around, they already have a well-established night of sitcoms and several new options waiting in the wings.
Still, there is some talk of ABC picking up the series. As of today, the execs at ABC and Warner Bros. are trying to work out the numbers. The deal that Warner Bros. can offer is likely being impacted by how much profit new episodes will bring in syndication.
Last summer, Warner Bros. sold the Old Christine syndication package to Lifetime for some ad time and about $350,000 per episode (compared to 30 Rock episodes which went for $800,000). The sitcom was also sold to local stations in most of the US markets.
Reruns will pop up on cable and local stations in the fall. It remains to be seen if new episodes will be on ABC.
What do you think? Should ABC rescue The New Adventures of Old Christine? Where would you put it — with The Middle, Cougar Town, or someplace else?

I know this post is old and I doubt if anyone will read this. But I really wish they hadn’t cancelled Old Christine. There is something about Julia Louis Dreyfus that makes you love her! Her character is so fun-loving and layed back…she seems like someone that most people would like in real life. The actors are great and so is the writing. Truth be told, I much prefer it to 30 rock. It is much more realistic and relatable. When I watch 30 rock I constantly feel that the acting feels fake. No one could really be like that.… Read more »
I love this show and wish CBS had kept it. I watch the re-runs but want new episodes (come on ABC).
I LOVE the new adventures of old Christine! is one of the best comedies EVER! save The new adventures PLEASE!
Bring it back! Someone, anyone, it is among the greatest of comedy sitcoms out there!
ABC, can you please pick this show up for another season? This is one of the best comedies on TV. I think it’s better than 2 1/2 men. This will bring up ABC’s ratings with Modern Family. Please Please pick this up.
Thanks!!

This show is humorous, witty, and delightful. The problem with good shows, is the networks do not put enough funding into marketing them.
I LOVE this show it should defn be picked back up….Please save this show i watch all the reruns ..and i need more of it
I LOVE this show! All the characters are great. Cancel Cougar Town! We watch the reruns every night of Christine. With so many bad shows on TV, how did this show end up on the cutting block? SAVE THIS SHOW!
I recently discovered this show and I’m infatuated with it, it’s the only show that has made me actually Laugh Out Loud in many, many years! My husband & friends are now hooked on it as well and we would all be very disapointed if it were canceled – we need new episodes PLEASE! I have all the others memorized 🙂 I rarely watch sitcoms anymore, I usually watch reality tv because it’s fresh. The new adventures of old christine is in a leauge of it’s own because the material is new and the delivery by the fantastic actors is… Read more »
This was one of the BEST comedies on TV. Julie Louise Dreyfus is adorable, and incredibly funny and amazing at what she does. I think she did the character great, and she didn’t make me want to see Elaine at all, and I was a huge Seinfeld fan (like with Jason Alexander, he will always be George to me). The show made me laugh out loud every episide, had a lovable cast, and was just good. How can they cancel it after 5 seasons, especially without a real finale (does anyone remember how they did that with Las Vegas). It’s… Read more »
love this show. I watch it everyday on channel 26,38 and 13! Bring it back on ABC
I LOVE the show and so does my husband! Somebody should totally pick it up!
I love this show and I think it would be a shame if it wasn’t picked up. CBS did a poor job of marketing this awesome show.
Yes, I like the show which I watch the reruns everyday. It would be nice to have Mr. Harris come back also because it was funnier then also.
