We’ve received quite a few e-mails from readers who are been worried that Parenthood has been cancelled by NBC. Well, it hasn’t been canned and will actually be returning on January 4th. That’s the good news but fans shouldn’t get too complacent. The drama hasn’t been performing all that well and certainly isn’t assured of a third season.
Last May, Parenthood was one of those shows that was “on the bubble” but still ended up being renewed. Though season one premiered with a 3.1 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 8.1 million viewers, it soon after dropped to a 2.3 rating and 5.83 million viewers. The 13 episodes of season one ended up averaging a 2.6 in the demo and 6.38 million total viewers.
For season two, Parenthood debuted at about the same demo rating it had at the end of season one. Unfortunately, that didn’t last. In mid-November, shortly before it went on hiatus, Parenthood hit a series low of a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demo and 4.8 million viewers.
The first half of the season has averaged a 2.1 in the demo and 5.22 million. Parenthood is currently the seventh-highest rated scripted program on the network, falling in the middle of the list, just below The Event. While it’s not in immediate danger of being cancelled, the show’s certainly not safe either. Its fate will ultimately be decided by how well it performs when it returns from the six week hiatus. Most shows don’t typically fare very well and ratings drop after a hiatus. Will Parenthood be the exception?
What do you think? Will the ratings for Parenthood go up or down? Will it be cancelled or survive to see season three?

Put Parenthood back on!!! My husband and I love the show. The world has enough killing we don’t need another show to see gore. I am not a fan of watching tv much because of all the violence most tv shows portray. Parenthood has always been the one show I look forward to every week. The characters are portrayed realistically and there is depth to the show. NBC, it’s time to let the people enjoy non-violent shows. Show the spirit and be for the people and not the money…for one hour…please!
Parenthood is a wonderful show and I will be very dissappointed if it goes off of the air. Take off some of the violent shows not a show that is about families working together.
My husband and I look forward to Parenthood each week. We’ve been upset by long pauses in the program. I think NBC needs to promote the show much more. It has an ensemble cast. I really care about the people the actors portray. Parenthood actually offers a show without guns or violence. We need more of the touchy-feely programs since we seem to be becoming a nation of unfeeling individuals who care for little else than their own well being.
I really really really need this show to be cancelled. I only like the movie. Get rid of this show
i have seen this show and i think it is boring trash and should be cancelled
I love Parenthood..I think it is the best show on..it is the only show i can’t wait to see until next week!! and i have to wait till january4th! that stinks.. i hope they give it a few more seasons!!
Please don’t cancel this show! This is the one show that I look forward to watching every week. The cast is great. A parent of any age child can relate to this show.
Parenthood is one of the BEST shows airing on television. Intelligent, humourous and very real. I looked forward to it every week. Please do not take it off. There are so many other inane shows that keep coming back. I don’t understand why. So many of my friends and family really enjoy this show. It shows how to deal with conflicts, family problems and is funny, too. Keeping my fingers crossed!
Parenthood is one of the FEW shows worth watching, I not only want it to continue, I would like you to STOP deleting it every other week with “silly shows.”
parenthood is a spot on family drama. I question when a show about the end of our world with aliens taking the planet gets more viewers ….I have learned alot from the characters in Parenthood and only hope the network will keep the show in support of those of us who would like to be based in reality. The cast is delightful. thanks to you all .
I’ve never commented on a blog before so I want you to realize how serious I’m taking this action of voicing my opinion. To cancel the show Parenthood would be a mistake. I am a mother of two children: my daughter is 35 and my son is 20. I am also a grandmother to three, two girls (18 & 16) and a grandson (9). The subjects and story line Parenthood has covered has been amazing if not to say one that has touched upon the truth of today’s times and the family unit. This show is like reading a book… Read more »
Parenthood can not be cancelled. My family and I watch it every week even if it is awkward to watch AS a family. We all love this show!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!! Don’t get rid of this show. This is an awesome real life show, my sister and I look forward to watching it every week and every time it hits home. We will be so bummed if it doesn’t make it a third season.
I was wondering if it is comming back. I love the show! AND my hubby won’t qnnoy me durring it because henactually likes it a miricle since it’ s not a sports show or NASCAR !!I hope they keep it on!
hope parenthood comes back, it had the most real portrayal of how we all wish we could communicate, great writing, and awesome soundtrack, the cast is also especially spectacular, I actually feel whats being delivered, because it relates to real life.
My husband and I look forward to Parenthood every week. We’re hoping it returns this season and for many more to come. It’s fresh and realistic. The casting is absolutely perfect and the characters are believable. Please don’t waste all this talent by letting this great show go by the wayside.
Agreed! I can’t wait for it to start again…we only watch a few shows on a regular basis and that’s one of them!
