Rectify has been cancelled by SundanceTV. Season four will be the final season, and it will air on the network in Fall 2016.
Rectify was the first original series to air on the network, so this was not an easy decision for SundanceTV to make. Production on the fourth and final season will begin in April.

PEABODY AWARD-WINNING “RECTIFY,” SUNDANCE TV’S FIRST ORIGINAL SERIES, TO RETURN FOR ITS FOURTH AND FINAL SEASON IN FALL 2016
PASADENA, CA – January 8, 2016 – SundanceTV today announced from the Television Critics’ Association (TCA) Press Tour that “Rectify,” the network’s Peabody Award-winning drama, will begin production on its fourth and final season in April and premiere in fall 2016.
Created, written and directed by Academy Award(R) winner Ray McKinnon and produced by Emmy Award(R) winners Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein (“Breaking Bad,” “Better Call Saul”), “Rectify” first premiered on SundanceTV in April 2013. Throughout its first three seasons, “Rectify” has garnered an outpouring of critical acclaim and a steadfast cult audience, along with a 2015 Peabody Award, a Writers Guild Award nomination and five Critics’ Choice TV Award nominations, among many other accolades.
“‘Rectify’ is in many ways an existential story that was allowed to come to life during an existential era in serial storytelling,” said McKinnon. “It was a case of perfect timing with the perfect partners. I have always felt that ‘Rectify’ could end at any time or just as easily continue. Well, not easily. But there is no perfect ‘end’ for this story nor for these characters. They will continue to live on. We just won’t document them any longer. And the timing of this ‘non-end’ end feels exactly right. SundanceTV has been a dream to work with on this journey; I am so grateful to have been allowed the freedom to tell the tale I wanted to tell in the way I felt it should be told with the mad and beautiful collaborators who joined me on the ride… Oh wait, we haven’t shot the final season yet. I’ll get back to you.”
“Rectify” follows the life of Daniel Holden (Aden Young), who returns to his small hometown in Georgia after serving 19 years on death row. Having spent his entire adult life waiting to die, Daniel must now try to find a way to cope with his past and forge a “normal” life with a future before him. Daniel, who is still struggling with adapting to the routine aspects of modern life, affects everyone whom he comes in contact with, including his very fractured family, those working to protect him and those working against him on the side of law and order.
Are you a fan of Rectify? Are you sad to hear it is being cancelled? Tell us what you think.
This show has been one of the best that I have seen in such a long time. Such great actors and a story line that is timeless. Hurrah for all that worked on it and all the actors in it. Acted so realistically and made me feel the pain, depression, disappointment, all the feelings that they conveyed. So sad that it is over now. Hoping to see something that is this worthy of watching soon from the producers, directors and actors.
I just finished watching Rectify after seeing it on a list of best shows to watch on Netflix. One of the best! Hate to see it cancelled, I can see where this show could go for a long time. I especially loved the south Ga setting!
I am terribly disappointed that there won’t be a season 5. Rectify was the most incredible series I have ever seen. It’s deep, dark, and disturbing, yet funny and inspiring. Aden Young and Abigail Spencer are the best. I hope this show comes back some day.
I just watched the final episode… and while it was a well thought out close, I just don’t feel like the story should be over. I really want more. There are still so many issues that need to be put solidly to rest. I worked for 20 years in a state prison system, as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. Daniel Holden is such an entrancing character, not dissimilar to other inmates I have known. I don’t mean that I met any inmates that I knew were innocent. I mean that the question of guilty or innocent, doesn’t necessarily translate into… Read more »
They need to renew this show. After 4 seasons of our devotion to the show and network they can’t end the series with unresolved answers.
I am usually very critical of any show that goes for more than a year, feeling that a better writer could have done it all in one season. However, this subject matter would certainly not allow that and, top to bottom, this was an excellent series. Would love to see another season. Pick it up three years later with Daniel as the writer of a best selling book about his emergence from death. Hats off to all involved with creating this show!
You `can’t cancel. It is a very deep, thought provoking series. A show unlike any other. The dialog is gripping and intelligent.
We love this show and can’t believe that it ends with season four. We are hoping that it would be picked up again. Only the good die young.
Rectify has been like an old friend for 4 seasons now. I feel a sense of loss with its cancellation; however, much like Breaking Bad, to end at this point was the right move. It leaves us feeling a strong sense of optimism and hope, much like Daniel began to feel. Truly and artistic masterpiece by all involved in the making of this heartfelt beauty. The dialogue was stunning and masterfully put on screen by a superb cast. Kudos. You will be missed!
I’m truly sorry to learn that Rectify has been cancelled and season four will be the last of this remarkable series. It is seldom indeed that any television series plums the depth of emotions that were found in this series. I hope the producers will reconsider and bring the series back again.
Beyond sad… it is the most compelling story I have ever seen. The actors are superh, the cinematoghraphy crucial to supporting the emotion and suspense in the story. There is an article on the web suggesting five shows to watch as replacements. My reaction was No!! I am starting Rectify from the beginning again, to see what nuances I missed. I never watch a series or movie twice on purpose until now. Thank you to every one involved with the development of this story. So poignant, so emotive, so perfect.
