Recently, we reported that TNT had cancelled Rizzoli & Isles. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, TNT chief Kevin Reilly discussed why he’s ending the popular procedural.
Rizzoli & Isles is currently in the middle of its sixth season and will end after a short seventh season this summer.
Speaking the Hollywood Reporter at the TCA winter press tour, Reilly said he pulled the plug on Rizzoli & Isles because the series has run its course:
If I came in and said, year two of Rizzoli & Isles, we’re pulling the plug on it, I would have probably gotten some [feedback]. They have not said no to me on anything and I don’t think they would have said no, but I think they would have gone like, ‘Really?! You want to do that?’ And, honestly, that would have been a stupid move. I’ve got a show that people love, that’s performed really well, why would I do that? Coming to the end of a seven-year run, it’s an easier decision. Everybody involved, from producers to talent, are like, ‘It’s been a good run. We’re going to be one of a couple cable shows that has made it to that 100-plus [episode] number. There have been very few cable shows that have made that many episodes. So let’s go out when we’re strong and not limp.'”
For years, Rizzoli & Isles has been one of TNT’s flagship series, bringing in good ratings and an average of around four million viewers per episode in season six so far. The series’ cancellation seems to be part of Reilly’s larger revamping of both TNT and TBS as networks with acclaimed original material.
Rizzoli & Isles is just the latest dumpee for TNT. In December, three of the network’s dramas were cancelled—Legends, Public Morals, and Agent X.
What do you think? Are you a fan of Rizzoli & Isles? Do you think it’s time the series end?
Rizzoli and Isles is the only TNT show that I watch (religiously) and am very disappointed that they’re pulling the plug. My sister who’s in a different household feels the same way as well as my daughter who watches this show with me. Eventually the series will need to end but it doesn’t make sense to end at its all time peak. (Thumbs down).
I do not want it cancelled. Its one of my favorite shows.
TNT, you suck! That is the one show I can’t wait to come back on.
Do I think it’s time for Rizzoli and Isles to be cancelled? Of course not. It’s one of the few shows I look forward to seeing return and I can’t believe no one at TNT has enough imagination to come up with stories for a few more seasons. You can count this as two votes — my brother (separate household) feels the same way.
The show is one of the best!! I’m sad to see it go! The characters all work well together, it should not end!
This is one of the best shoes on TV. It’s a shame. I won’t be watching TNT anymore.
don`t stop the serie !! its a good tv show also here in the netherlands many people watch this
Many series continue on & on for years. I thought, it was ratings that counted. They are there. Shame on the network!
DO NOT END this TV show. My husband and I both love the interaction of all the characters on the show. Jane and Maura are great friends. Love the show
A show that helped me through being raped and beaten. Women can be strong and powerful! Heartbroken to see it go!
Stupid decision to cancel. It good ratings and you are cancelling it. I saw previews of the new shows that are coming and I WILL NOT be watching them. I’m sure there will be a lot others not watching.
i am a avid fan of both rizzoli&isles and agent x and wood rather see more shows like them and less reality shows.
RIZZOLI & ISLES IS MY FAVORITE SHOW – WITH MY TWO FAVORITE WOMEN ACTORS AND THE WHOLE CAST!!! CAN’T BELIEVE YOU CAN THINK IT IS AT THE END OF THE RUN. WE ALL LOOK FORWARD TO IT AND HOW THE CHARACTERS HAVE GROWN OVER YEARS, ETC….
No, it epitomizes the quirks of our families today. I look forward to each and every show and love the reruns.
No Rizzoli and Isles should not be dumped. It’s a show the whole family can watch. Unfortunately it doesn’t hit the demographics the network hot shots want. I guess the baby boomers don’t count on any demographics
