All good things must come to an end… eventually. Freeform confirms the fifth and final season of its Switched at Birth TV series will not premiere until 2017. A couple of weeks before Switched at Birth creator Lizzy Weiss announced the delay on Twitter, she also announced season five would be Switched at Birth‘s last, leaving the show effectively cancelled. This is the first time Freeform has addressed when the show, which ended its fourth season on a cliffhanger, would return.
Switched at Birth stars Katie Leclerc as Daphne Vasquez and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish, who were, as the title spells out, switched at birth. The cast also includes Constance Marie, D.W. Moffett, Lea Thompson, Lucas Grabeel, and guest stars Sean Berdy and Marlee Matlin. Weiss, Paul Stupin, and Linda Gase executive produce.
A family drama, Switched at Birth explores early adulthood, blended families, deaf culture, and includes scenes shot in American Sign Language. The series has won a Peabody Award as well as a Television Critics Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming, and an Imagen Award for Best Primetime Program.
Freeform says:
“Switched at Birth” will end its five-season run after more than 100 episodes, in early 2017 with a special 90–minute series finale.
The Peabody Award-winning drama series begins its fifth and final season – including the milestone 100th episode – in 2017. The upcoming season picks up from the cliffhanger finale with Daphne and Bay living in China. A mysterious call has them packing for home, where they try to settle back in, but ten months has brought some changes. Daphne finds herself in the midst of racial tensions at the university and witnesses the racism faced by her black friends Iris, Sharee, and new baseball star Chris, in an episode told solely from their perspectives. The 100th episode sees the return of Angelo Sorrento (guest star Gilles Marini) as a vision brought about by a young woman with an unexpected link to the Kennish/Vasquez families. The series is executive-produced by Lizzy Weiss, Paul Stupin and Linda Gase. The series stars Katie Leclerc, Vanessa Marano, Constance Marie, D.W. Moffett, Lea Thompson, Lucas Grabeel, with guest stars Sean Berdy and Marlee Matlin.

Switched at Birth is the BEST show ever. Why would a show this GREAT be canceled? Please don’t cancel! I watched all 4 seasons in a week!! For me, watching it was like reading a book you couldn’t put down until you finished. Definitely don’t want season 5 to be it’s last.
love this series
please dont take this series away.the best in a long time.
Please don’t cancel this show!!!
Switched At Birth is the best show on and you want to cancel it! Why not cancel some of them other shows that suck and leave Switched At Birth alone. Let Net Flex or another channel take it over!!
Please don’t cancel the show I just started watching it and it is a very good show. I didn’t know about it at first until I seen it on Netflix and my sister was telling me about it. Please don’t cancel the show let it be a 6 season
I love this show. I started it on Netflix and have watched it ever since. I look forward to every season and I’m very sad to see it go.
Yes I would have loved to see the show go further it was one of my faveorites I love the drama and the story line it had and I will be very sad to see it end.
I am disappointed that the show is ending. I love this show because it deals with every day situations. Not only does it explore the realities of teenagers but of young adults, expecting parents, marriage and relationships, and so much more. It saddens my heart to see a series that has allowed the audience to bond with the characters in a personal way end. In a world of chaos, heartaches, and despair, it was nice to have the opportunity to watch a show that spoke to the audience so intimately and lovingly. It was a privilege to enjoy a show… Read more »
This series really needs to continue it has been my favorite for as long as I can remember! It NEEDS to continue and return sooner than 2017
Noo!! It cant end.. why so early?.. this show is amazing please dont stop casting this show
Switched at Birth is such a great show. It’s a shame that there is such a long delay for season 5 and most of all being canceled. What could freeform possibly see wrong with renewing this series? All the shows they have airing now is not worth watching (my opinion). Switched at Birth is the only reason I tune to this network. So disappointed in the direction freeform is going. Guess this is why it’s no longer ABC Family…
Would love to see the show return – I’ll miss the great characters and all their trials and tribulations. Maybe a new season on Netflix like other shows have done? Waiting eagerly for January.
I love this show.. It inspires me every time I watch….shows the deaf community in a wonderful context…the writing is so good and so on target for the times of teens right now. The actors are super….I am 69 yrs old and I am really going to miss it..but I will hang on until 2017 though not happily.
This makes me sad! I love this show!
