We’ve received a few emails today from folks who are confused about the status of ABC’s The Deep End. It seems that several sites started reporting last week that the show had been cancelled. We reported yesterday that it hadn’t. What’s going on?
When ABC scheduled The Deep End, they only allowed for six Thursday night timeslots, from January 21st until February 25th. For whatever reason, the network didn’t schedule the seventh and last episode of the season. Perhaps, the sixth episode seemed like a more natural stopping point for the season.
The ratings have not been good for the series so, when ABC promoted that this week’s was the season finale, some sites jumped the gun and declared that it was being pulled prematurely and cancelled. (Interestingly, the same thing happened with Defying Gravity.) Whatever the reason, they were incorrect about Deep End.
An ABC representative confirmed to us today that the show has not been cancelled. Last night’s was the season finale and no decision has been made yet on a renewal. If the show does return, the extra episode will be part of season two.
While the show’s ratings have given viewers little reason to hope that the ABC series will be renewed, you never know. Many declared Dollhouse and Better Off Ted to be goners last Spring and both were miraculously picked up.
What do you think? Are you holding out hope that The Deep End will survive somehow or is it destined to be cancelled?

I love the show and hope it is not cancelled!!!
It’s one of those shows that can remain timeless in the sense that the topics can always reflect what is going on in society.
I was incredibly disappointed to see it was not airing this evening.
I don’t watch other TV programs so I guess I’ll just get more reading in.
Bring The Deep End back, ABC – and sooner rather than later. It’s the best show you’ve had in a long time!
I love this show. A lot. It is interesting and emotional without being too sentimental. I think the writing is well done and the characters believable. They are just getting their feet under them and I hope they have the chance!
I really love this show. I enjoy watching the characters and relationships grow and evolve…and I love the humor of the show. I hope ABC gives the show another chance to up it’s ratings. Personally, I don’t watch the show on tv and many others probably don’t. The internet is just easier and more convenient. I have watched each of the six episodes at least twice AND I got a friend of mine hooked, so we both sincerely hope ABC will give it another season.
I have little interest in law and I suspect that The Deep End does not mirror real life in a law firm very closely. But I really do not care! This show is fantastic! I’m so glad they have not cancelled it. I was really looking forward to where they go with it. I love the “Prince of Darkness” and his wife, all the interns, and Rowdy. A great set of starting characters. This show makes me laugh every episode. Honestly I suspect that the low ratings for the first few shows were due to the ADS for the show:… Read more »
Keep it going! For light-hearted humor, okay acting, and interesting characters, its a nice break from the intense dramas that dominate today’s television.
I hope this is true. So very tired of shows I let myself like being cancelled. This is a sweet, happy show. ‘Defying Gravity’ & ‘Eastwick’ — both gone. I really hope this one returns.
While I won’t say that Deep End is my favorite show ever I will say that it has been a surprise must watch for me! I don’t get to watch much t.v. so what I watch has made the grade. This being a new show I gave it three episodes and then I decide if I’ll keep watching. I was hooked after the second. I too hope ABC gives this a chance.
Remember Party of Five? That was a slow starter too but after the hullabaloo the core fans raised there was a second season and the rest is history.
I really hope they bring the Deep End back! It’s my favorite show ever!!!
I hope that they bring The Deep End back for a second part of the first season. It’s a great show!
And what is up with all of this half season stuff, like the show V?
I love this show. I honestly hope they keep it around. I’m really happy they decided to keep Better Off Ted as well. Too many good shows are being canceled. Stop looking for the easy way out and quit the canceling. Whatever happened to competition. If you think it isn’t as good as it could be, then get it there. I’m just hoping they keep it around.
I truly hope ABC gives this wonderful show another chance to increase their ratings. Each season I make room in my TV viewing schedule to include one new show. Last season I chose The Unusuals (cancelled) and mid-season Better Off Ted (almost cancelled). Please, ABC, let me enjoy one show that is of superior quality longer than a few episodes!
I love the deep end it is one of the best shows that I have watched in a long time… I looked forward to watching it every week I even had my mom hooked… so this can not be the end. I believe its a great cast and there is yet potential for where this show could go many great shows at one point ratings were low and thought they would fail and yet 5 and even 10 years later the show is still on the air. Great things take time. You don’t get the best merlot in 30 days… Read more »
I do not agree w/what Greg said. While its his opinion, mine is as follows. I found the show to be entertaining. And it was pretty obvious why the character played by Billy Zane-Cliff Huddle..was called “The Prince of Darkness.” Who else, but a total sleaze (his character, not the person playing him) would stage a “break in”,just to reconcile w/his estranged wife! It was also refreshing,to see Tina Majorino,in an adult role..different from the one she played in “What We do is Secret.” Even though the rest of her roles were as watchable..she didn’t get much of a chance to act outside… Read more »
I think the deep end is amazing. I’m hope to be a lawyer someday, so I find the Law aspect of it very interesting. But I have SEVERAL friends who have no interest in law and still love the shows. It seems like a classier version of Melrose Place or a show like that. And I think we need a show that is a bit classier. I love it and I hope they keep it. Almost all shows are weaker in the beginning. And they only have it 6 episodes! They need to give it more time to spread, via… Read more »
