Tonight marks the last episode of The Event for 2010. NBC plans to relaunch the series in three months, on February 28th, after letting their new series The Cape have the timeslot. Is it a risky move? Not really. Ultimately, they don’t have much choice.
The Event follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter), a young man who’s investigating the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend. He slowly begins to uncover the biggest cover-up in the history of the United States. Others in the cast include Sarah Roemer, Laura Innes, Ian Anthony Dale, Scott Patterson, Clifton Collins Jr., Taylor Cole, Lisa Vidal, Bill Smitrovich, Zeljko Ivanek, and Blair Underwood.
The series debuted in September to decent ratings with a 3.6 in the 18-49 demo and 10.88 million total viewers. That’s a healthy sampling but, considering all of the promotion that NBC put behind it, the programmers were likely disappointed by its third place rank in the timeslot.
While some viewers clearly love the show, more than half who watched the first episode have already lost interest. The Event has been losing viewers, sometimes as much as 15 or 20% in one week, and to date has never shown an increase week-to-week in the demo. The most recent installment garnered just a 1.7 rating in the demo and 5.19 million viewers.
You can blame the network for not doing a better job of promoting The Event but clearly there’s a problem with the series when people who already watch don’t feel compelled to return week after week.
Will this February “relaunch” help? Based on recent TV history, the answer is no. Just look at V and FlashForward. People who were interested in The Event have either already tried it and stuck around or given up on it. Those who haven’t watched previously are very unlikely to give a try because they assume that they’ve missed too much backstory already. On top of that, when the show returns, the ratings will likely be lower than what they are now. By the time The Event returns in February, many casual fans will have already gotten involved with other shows.
The one thing that The Event has going for it is the fact that it’s on NBC. The peacock network continues to struggle and The Event is currently the fifth most-watched scripted program on the network. If things go as expected, it will drop much lower on the list next year. Still, with the exception of The CW, NBC is the only network that would consider giving this series more time. They’ll surely let all 22 episodes air.
The Event returns on Monday, February 28th and will have 12 more original episodes to air at that point. Will there be a second season? We’ll have to wait and see but hopefully the producers will plan ahead and not end the show without any resolution.
What do you think? Does The Event have a chance for survival? What could NBC do to save this show? Anything?

The event rocked…I was blown away by the cancellation…I rarely watch TV and was eager for each episode. Not sure what the issue is but I will be back in February for more.
I watched ever show and liked it and was sorry that it just went off the air. Hope it comes back without the going back and forth in time and I think with just a little adjustment it could be GREAT!
I love the event I hope that it keeps playing
I was one of the many viewers that lost interest in the show. Weird, weird, weird!!!!!! Cancelling it would be no loss to me.
I loved the show, but I’m probably not a common demographic. I rarely watch “prime time” television and find most of it boring drivel. So maybe that’s the problem. There is some actual thinking involved in the event. It is suspenseful and has lots of twists and turns. But maybe it isn’t violent enough or sensational enough or sexy enough. Too bad. Crap is mostly what sells when it comes to TV, particularly network. What can you do?
Love the show and I can’t wait till Feb to continue watching. Casting is excellent,Storyline is great. This is GOOD TV.
They better finish the story. I hate to be left wondering about what is going on. I don’t like waiting until the end of February but I will. Don’t let us down! I may not be able to see it when it originally runs but I always DVR it or watch later online.
I like watching The Event but I’m not waiting around for 3 months to continue watching the storyline.
Enjoyable. Hope it returns soon.
Too many commercials, cuts up the storyline. The show is incredible but a little draggy. I have been waiting for a show like this for a long, long time. When do we get to truth in this world, the time is now. Don’t quit, don’t give up. Can’t wait for Feb. Get the show on the road, time is of the essence. Boldly tell the story. Let us see more , more!
I enjoy THE EVENT. What I’m tired of is getting sort of attached to a show then having it get cancelled. Really, I think the “rating” expectations really should drop. At least “finish a show off” and don’t just leave the commited viewers hanging (ie: Terminator). I do hope THE EVENT airs as promised in Feb and they “wrap it up” nicely so we can all feel good. Besides, Jason Ritter is pretty good – give the guy a chance for a good career!
The Event is filling people in on much more than they even realize. I think this is why it is getting the “review” it is getting. Maybe because it opens people’s eyes to the truth that has been hidden from us since the late 40’s! They are here, they do walk among us. They are planning an “Event” and this is when the truth will come out. Becareful though, they are NOT our friends! Remember who your savior is. These “Fallen Angel, Alien creatures” are not of God. May your next show, if aired, enlighten you even more!
I loved the Event. It was actually the only TV show I was watching. I do not understand whay other people did not like it.
I am looking forward to watch it again in February.
My husband and I love the Event. Perhaps the reason people aren’t watching is because of the time slot. Isn’t Monday Night Football showing during the same time?
The only show worth watching! 24 ended , now all thats on is Pawn Stars. What do people watch? T.V. sucks!!!!
How could people not like this show? I must have some bad taste in entertainment.
