Bones has been a quiet hit for FOX but the same can’t be said for its spin-off, The Finder. FOX has now cancelled the low-rated series after one season.
The Finder is a procedural series that revolves around a man (Geoff Stults) with the extraordinary ability to help people find the unfindable. Other castmembers include Maddie Hasson, Mercedes Masohn, and Michael Clarke Duncan.
The spin-off debuted on January 12th to a disappointing 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.50 million total viewers. It was fourth in its Thursday night timeslot right out of the gate and lost nearly 30% of the all-important demo from its compatible lead-in, Bones. This was not a good start.

Things picked up a bit in the following weeks, thanks in large part to the show having FOX’s blockbuster American Idol as a lead-in. Still, the numbers weren’t as high as they should have been.
After seven weeks on the air, FOX put Finder on hiatus and then moved it to Friday nights, giving its Thursday timeslot to Touch. If The Finder could maintain a healthy percentage of its viewers after the switch, it would likely garner a renewal.
But that didn’t happen and Finder’s numbers dropped like a rock. In its first Friday airing, the freshman series attracted a 1.1 demo rating — an episode-to-episode loss of 53% — with just 4.03 million viewers. The numbers for future episodes fluctuated a bit but didn’t really get any more encouraging. The network could do just as well or better by running cheaper reality programming.
The season finale of The Finder is set to air this Friday night and there won’t be any episodes after that. Hopefully the producers saw the writing on the wall early enough and won’t leave viewers hanging with any major unresolved storylines.
What do you think? What went wrong with this show? Why do you think The Finder failed to attract a bigger audience? Was cancelling the series the right decision? How would you have fixed it?
I think it was probably one of the stupidest ideas to cancel this show. It has a perfect balance of seriousness and humor, mystery and realism, drama and action. The show is brilliant. I can barely watch most shows without being bored out of my mind or livid with the propaganda plastered throughout. Yes, there was obviously some ideology being forced, especially Leo’s non consistent religious understanding. I honestly had no idea this show even existed until I saw it on Netflix. If there was any downfall it was in the advertisement-end of this show not in the production. It… Read more »
The problem was fox moved it to friday…friday is where shows go to die…they took this awesome show and snuffed it by moving it to friday midway thru its first and only season
I just watched season one on Netflix and I thought the show was very good. The story-line was just different enough to sway away from all the typical series about killing and crime or law and order type shows. The cast was perfect for their roles and very believable. Even the stories are believable and just humorous enough not to be stupid. I loved the way he came up with how to find things. (God forbid some of these young people try to do something without a computer telling them how!) And maybe that was part of the problem….wrong demographic.… Read more »
Alot of people agree that the show was cancelled too soon.
I loved the show from the first instance. I guess the powers that be didn’t know how to market the show. With the death of Michael Clarke Duncan didn’t help.
They could market it differently where The Finder actually left Florida.
The Netflix idea would help. I would Michael Jai White /Tiny Lister take over the role. He is only actor who would bring that kind of gravitas to the role. The season two could staff with the funeral. Then introduce a relative.
Quality show gone too soon.
Loved this show on Netflix. Hope it continues some way.
Absolutely loved this show. Unfortunately, was not aware of it soon enough. Can’t believe the cancelled it.
Make it a Netflix series! Lots of people use Netflix worldwide. This would develop a cult following.
Great show…never knew it existed until I just found it on netflix. It’s a shame it was cancelled so quickly…good actors, well written characters, and a nice balance of humor and drama in the stories.
Great show. Actors and actresses excellent. Writers did outstanding job. Quirky. Bar and car interesting. Should have continued.
The problem here is just one ! Producers believe that outside America does not exist audience of their tv shows! Guesw what ? We are here, i sometime like , watch and PAY for this shows ! 1.7 rating and 10 time more in whole world, who want to see what will hapen in next episode. That is big Hollywood problem. There is no other people outside USA ! Just weak up and open your eyes , and do something nice for all other people out there who what to know how … Nevermind… Voice in the desert …
Love the finder but dont know how they could continue without Michel Clarke Duncan.
The problem is the tv station are dying, I don’t watch TV anymore, streaming services is so much better, you watch it when you can, in the right order and most importantly NO AD BREAKS.
I loved this show and everything about it always have and loved that my other favorite show bones was integrated with the show. Never showed have been canceled. I wanted more and was left with a lot of questions.
Should of put it on a different channel were it would have a better chance. This show was really good.
PS this show was watched even in BULGARIA…
