After low ratings, the peacock network has pulled the plug on the series about a telepathic paramedic.
The Listener debuted on June 4th on NBC. Initially produced for Canadian networks, the drama revolves around a young paramedic (Craig Olejnik) who has the ability to hear other people’s thoughts. Through his job and abilities, he seeks to help those in need in any way he can.
Others in the cast include Lisa Marcos, Ennis Esmer, Mylene Robic, Arnold Pinnock, Anthony Lemke, Lara Jean Chorostecki, John Fleming, and Colm Feore.
On NBC, the show got off to a rocky start in the ratings. The two-hour premiere brought in 5.32 million viewers and just a 1.4/4 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. Summer viewing expectations aren’t very high but it didn’t bode well that the program landed in third place in total viewers and the demo.
Things didn’t get any better for the later episodes. Last week, Listener’s numbers hit a series low with 3.3 million viewers and a tiny 0.7/2 rating in the demo. Even for Summer viewership, those numbers are quite poor for a major network.

As a result, NBC has decided to end The Listener’s run prematurely. Next week’s episode will be the last to air on the peacock network and repeats of Law & Order will fill the timeslot after that.
The remaining five episodes of Listener are expected to be streamed online in August. The 13 episodes have already aired in many countries across the world and will continue to run in Canada.
Word is that the first season ends with plenty of unresolved mysteries. There’s been no news about the possibility of a second season for The Listener as yet but, if there is, you certainly won’t be seeing it on NBC.
What do you think? A good call by NBC or were you looking forward to seeing more?

I looked on the web to see where The Listener had gone. My family liked it a lot (different ages, kids adults) and all of a sudden it disappeared. These reality shows that get crammed down our throat mostly suck.
I swear that NBC is in the business of LOSING money and making the viewers MAD rather than the other way around! NBC wouldn’t know a good series if one bit them in the butt! They’ve canceled too many great shows without even giving them a chance! I’m surprised ‘Chuck’ has made it as far as it has, but if they kill that show, I’m killing them! I REALLY hope that another network picks up ‘The Listener’. Like USA. Now THEY know a good series.
I think NBC made a HUGE mistake by taking this show off the air. I am very disappointed in them. They should at least try another time slot and/or a different day. I MISS THIS SHOW!!
NBC doesn’t know a good show when it has one! We finally get a show that’s not all blood and guts and violence and they pull it! I don’t know who you’re polling about who’s watching it, but all my friends love this show! You should consider bringing it back and in a better day and timeslot. You made a huge mistake!
I thought that this show was great. Don’t know who you polled but they are dead wrong. What we don’t need is another Law and Order it’s on a hundred channels already that I now turn off.
i think you guys had it on the wrong time, because even i a teenager that doesnt have to work that just sits on her butt couldnt see the show. i had to go to church. so i had to catch up on it online. i love that the show doesnt always have to be murder show. i love that he wasnt a cop but he would try his hardest to help out. try a saturday night their is nothing so i watch movies. please bring back the show. c i thought at frist was a little slow but after… Read more »
I am VERY disappointed NBC cancelled this show! Just as I was getting pulled into viewing and loving a new series, it’s gone. CBS or ABC should pick up this show (or any cable channel)… & give it more than a couple of episodes. Just as I was spreading the word, it was gone! 9.5 out of 10 times I pick a winner. The summer viewing schedule was a bad time to introduce this show to the demographic who would rave about it. Bad move NBC. Don’t give up on this great show! I can hardly wait to see it… Read more »
Dirty Sexy Money…..Jericho……Pushing Daisies…….October Road……and now the Listener, THAT DOES IT……..I am NOT going to watch ANY new shows that come on, whether it be on NBC, ABC, CBS, etc. It seems in the last year or so that anything I like goes off the air after one season (IF it lasts even one season….the Listener certainly didn’t). It seems the shows are not given any time for viewers to get used to them before they yank them off the air….and many of them are VERY GOOD shows. NBC, don’t even try to get me interested in any of your… Read more »
I love this show, why not try it on another night and time slot. I believe more people will catch on to this show. Summer tv ratings are always lower.
i dont think they gave it long for people to get use to i on the other hand loved it!!!!!! why can’t they bring it back on another chanel. dont they realize people work and not everyone has a DVR! this was one show i would drop my books for and that i dont do very often. THIS SUCKS!!!!!
You can stream The Listener episodes on Ninjavideo.net…they have all 13 episodes on there.
I BEG you to bring back “The Listener.” I fully enjoy this show, and when my TV is not working for some reason, it’s one of only three shows that I go out of my way to watch online instead. Find a better time slot or something – this show is REALLY good!
I really enjoy this show. I am surprised that it has been cancelled. I hope that it is picked up by another company. The advertising was non-existent and it deserves another shot, for sure! I agree, there is no violence and the story lines are very entertaining.
NBC – GIVE A NEW SHOW A CHANCE!!! The Listener was slow to start – building the characters and allowing the audience time to care about them. It is an intelligent drama which requires the depth of the characters. Just when we’re hooked into what happens to these people, you yank the show! I hope you are paying atttention to these emails becasue not ONE has agreed with your decision. I hope you reconsider and put it back on the fall schedule.
What a downer.. A good, wholesome program.. no voilence…. and you have to take it off the air… what a loss!!!!
