After low ratings, the peacock network has pulled the plug on the series about a telepathic paramedic.
The Listener debuted on June 4th on NBC. Initially produced for Canadian networks, the drama revolves around a young paramedic (Craig Olejnik) who has the ability to hear other people’s thoughts. Through his job and abilities, he seeks to help those in need in any way he can.
Others in the cast include Lisa Marcos, Ennis Esmer, Mylene Robic, Arnold Pinnock, Anthony Lemke, Lara Jean Chorostecki, John Fleming, and Colm Feore.
On NBC, the show got off to a rocky start in the ratings. The two-hour premiere brought in 5.32 million viewers and just a 1.4/4 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. Summer viewing expectations aren’t very high but it didn’t bode well that the program landed in third place in total viewers and the demo.
Things didn’t get any better for the later episodes. Last week, Listener’s numbers hit a series low with 3.3 million viewers and a tiny 0.7/2 rating in the demo. Even for Summer viewership, those numbers are quite poor for a major network.

As a result, NBC has decided to end The Listener’s run prematurely. Next week’s episode will be the last to air on the peacock network and repeats of Law & Order will fill the timeslot after that.
The remaining five episodes of Listener are expected to be streamed online in August. The 13 episodes have already aired in many countries across the world and will continue to run in Canada.
Word is that the first season ends with plenty of unresolved mysteries. There’s been no news about the possibility of a second season for The Listener as yet but, if there is, you certainly won’t be seeing it on NBC.
What do you think? A good call by NBC or were you looking forward to seeing more?

Hi again … Every time I have something to say about this amazing series …
Roles fit the actors like a glove to the hand…
They are beautiful, funny….
And playing the role perfectly !!!
Good morning, I write every day of our satellite company, that the “Listener” is a very successful series. I would be very disappointed if there will be no cecond season . Especially that the first season ended in such a tension way that left me in the clouds …
The series left me with a taste for more and more and ,more….
What can i say… I’m addicted to the series !!!
Hello. I want to say this series is very special. Because it reflects the reality of many people. Hard work to earn a living, the fact that he had no car, he lives in a small and simple apartment . This is the reality of many people. He uses his talent in a good way. he helps people… And many other reasons why the series is very interesting and easy to connect to it. I think I’m the only one how writing here … But that’s okay, I show my appreciation to the series and the actors.
I want this show back !!!
please !!!
Please!!!
Please!!!
Please!!!
Please!!! please!!!
My name is Emma, and i am from Israel, This is the best series I’ve seen !!! I was disappointed there were only 13 episodes ! I waited all day to see the chapter… This series is fascinating, interesting, and always leaves a taste for more … And Craig Olejnik plays the best role of any other player i knew. All of the players in the series are very good ! For a long time i never seen such a good series ! I hope there’ll be another season ! The series came to Israel two weeks ago. The season… Read more »
The major networks don’t deserve a fantastic show like The Listener.
Sell it to a cable network. I think it’s a perfect fit for USA, TNT or FX!
I want this show back, too! I don’t have cable so I wouldn’t know if it had ever been advertised, but I found The Listener on Hulu and thought it was great! I agree with the previous comment that it is like Lie to Me, Ghost Whisperer, and other popular shows. NBC should definitely reconsider their decision to cancel this show!! Maybe spend more on promoting it and give it another chance. Toby Logan is super cute, anyway! 😉 I really love//will miss watching The Listener!
just came across this show on hulu. watched all of it and wish there was more. supered bumbed to find out it was cancelled. i never even heard it advertised on tv. i thought it was a cool show and wish they had given it a chance.
What! I just got hooked! I’ve never heard of this show, and then I randomly came across it on hulu. ( a website) I was diff. looking forward to season 2 on the tv now that I know it’s on NBC.
Just saw that CTV ordered a 2nd season but NBC won’t be broadcasting it, so we US watchers will have to find it on the web.
Hey guys, NCIS got off to a slow start and now #1; rethink this.
what do you know about supernatural/ jensen ackles and jared
How can they cancel it!? It’s one of the very best shows i’ve ever seen! And the end of season one just left you hanging! So not cool. We NEED season 2!
wow…i never actually watched the movie on tv as i have satellite and miss a lot of shows on regular channels. However, i was able to catch some of the episodes on fancast.com and boy i was hooked right away. i am saddened that the show was canceled i wanted so much more.
I really liked the Listener. I agree with others that I very rarely take a chance on a new show on network TV anymore. It’s jolting to get caught up in a show and just have it disappear. Life, Life on Mars, Eli Stone, Listener–all the good, substantial new shows I liked last year were cancelled. This year I’m only watching the Good Wife–after one episode, figured it couldn’t fail. Other than that I’ll stick with the old standbys orwith cable for new shows.
Why is it that everytime a good show starts they always cancel them. I don’t even want to start watching anything new now, if I end up liking it it will most likely get caned..I LOVE THIS SHOW PLEASE MAKE SEASON TWO
