After low ratings, the peacock network has pulled the plug on the series about a telepathic paramedic.
The Listener debuted on June 4th on NBC. Initially produced for Canadian networks, the drama revolves around a young paramedic (Craig Olejnik) who has the ability to hear other people’s thoughts. Through his job and abilities, he seeks to help those in need in any way he can.
Others in the cast include Lisa Marcos, Ennis Esmer, Mylene Robic, Arnold Pinnock, Anthony Lemke, Lara Jean Chorostecki, John Fleming, and Colm Feore.
On NBC, the show got off to a rocky start in the ratings. The two-hour premiere brought in 5.32 million viewers and just a 1.4/4 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. Summer viewing expectations aren’t very high but it didn’t bode well that the program landed in third place in total viewers and the demo.
Things didn’t get any better for the later episodes. Last week, Listener’s numbers hit a series low with 3.3 million viewers and a tiny 0.7/2 rating in the demo. Even for Summer viewership, those numbers are quite poor for a major network.

As a result, NBC has decided to end The Listener’s run prematurely. Next week’s episode will be the last to air on the peacock network and repeats of Law & Order will fill the timeslot after that.
The remaining five episodes of Listener are expected to be streamed online in August. The 13 episodes have already aired in many countries across the world and will continue to run in Canada.
Word is that the first season ends with plenty of unresolved mysteries. There’s been no news about the possibility of a second season for The Listener as yet but, if there is, you certainly won’t be seeing it on NBC.
What do you think? A good call by NBC or were you looking forward to seeing more?

my wife does like Toby thats why i am dressing like him now..You are broken my wife’s heart!!!!!! give them a chance..make my wife happy!!!
I am honestly extremely pissed about this ordeal. The Listener is honestly my favorite show, and I was really looking forward to upcoming episodes. NBC definitely made a mistake.
I am completely peeved that this show got canceled. NBC didn’t even give this a chance, much like they never give anything a chance. This was the only show I really even gave a crap to watch on their pathetic network, & well, now they just blew that one. I do not care to see anything else on their network, UNLESS they bring “The Listener” back. Hell, I hope that it goes to a different network or someone else realizes that it DOES have a good, steady fan-base & take it, because I KNOW this show will do good. You… Read more »
I may be 13 but i loved that show i wanted to cry when it didnt come on it was such a good and funny show it always seems like some people love it but not enough so it just gets bumped of the air its not cool they should have let the whole serise go on air then canceled it
I can’t believe they canceled it either!
It gave me something to look forward to on Thursdays. It was one of my favorite shows.
I thought it was different then almost all the other shows out on tv, and it was very interesting.
That really makes me upset that they dumped “The Listener.” My mom and I were hooked on that show. The characters were loveable and the plot line kept you wanting to tune in every week. It’s a real shame that NBC gave up so soon.
NBC should have put this show in a diffrent time slot I know it would have gotten much better share at 8 PM. or even 9 PM.
I can’t believe they canceled the Listener! I loved the show; it was exciting, funny, and interesting. It really kept me watching, not to mention, it kept getting better every episode. And really? Law and Order reruns? That’s ridiculous. NBC doesn’t know what it’s losing.
Very disappointed with the peacock! Maybe everyone should ban NBC, if you guys don’t care about your viewers, maybe they should forget your channel even exist! BOO>>>>>>>>>>>>>>you should give it a chance, who wants to watch reruns, I think THE LISTENER will be a GREAT show if you would give it a chance, its new based in Canada, how many shows like this do we get to see based on our neighbors up North? No you rather have 10 different shows w/ the same title. This was new and fresh….Bad decision on your part….seems as thou everytime you bring out… Read more »
Okay, to me this was a good call by NBC. I gave the show a shot and watched several eps (now all of them), but it was poorly written and poorly acted, withi no sign things woould get better. Heck many elements embodied some of the worst of television, making the show more frustrating than entertaining. About the only thing I liked about it was Toronto finally got to play itself on a show.
I can not believe this show has been canceled
Finally one series with no obscenity, nor foul mouthed dialogue
not explicit nudity, so all of those things are against a “successful show” ??
What a shame !
I absolutely loved this show and was so disappointed last night when a rerun of Law and Order came on. Sure hope another network will pick it up. NBC has gotten notorious for cancelling good TV shows.
I had just watched my first show. I was just telling a friend that read books with that kind of theme about the show so I went on the NBC site to see when it aired and what channel because I very rarely watch network tv. You can imagine how disappointed I was to discover that it has been cancelled. I guess there is no sense watching any new shows if they aren’t going to give them a chance.
It is absolutely ridiculous to cancel this creative new show! It seems like every time I get interested in a series from this network, it is cancelled. And it’s being replaced with Law and Order reruns???! You already have the show, let it run and build a fan base you network morons!
I thinks its beyond unfortunate that this show, which has tremendus potential, has been yanked just as the ball started roling, I had only just discovered it when one episode later its been pulled. I can’t believe that the peacock network pulled THIS one while airing various redundant “Reality Shows” there are so many out there, its become like an easy fix for fill in time, as for Law & Order it can in no shape or form fill in the shoes that “The Listener” will leave because it is far to much like all the other shows airing right… Read more »
