After low ratings, the peacock network has pulled the plug on the series about a telepathic paramedic.
The Listener debuted on June 4th on NBC. Initially produced for Canadian networks, the drama revolves around a young paramedic (Craig Olejnik) who has the ability to hear other people’s thoughts. Through his job and abilities, he seeks to help those in need in any way he can.
Others in the cast include Lisa Marcos, Ennis Esmer, Mylene Robic, Arnold Pinnock, Anthony Lemke, Lara Jean Chorostecki, John Fleming, and Colm Feore.
On NBC, the show got off to a rocky start in the ratings. The two-hour premiere brought in 5.32 million viewers and just a 1.4/4 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. Summer viewing expectations aren’t very high but it didn’t bode well that the program landed in third place in total viewers and the demo.
Things didn’t get any better for the later episodes. Last week, Listener’s numbers hit a series low with 3.3 million viewers and a tiny 0.7/2 rating in the demo. Even for Summer viewership, those numbers are quite poor for a major network.

As a result, NBC has decided to end The Listener’s run prematurely. Next week’s episode will be the last to air on the peacock network and repeats of Law & Order will fill the timeslot after that.
The remaining five episodes of Listener are expected to be streamed online in August. The 13 episodes have already aired in many countries across the world and will continue to run in Canada.
Word is that the first season ends with plenty of unresolved mysteries. There’s been no news about the possibility of a second season for The Listener as yet but, if there is, you certainly won’t be seeing it on NBC.
What do you think? A good call by NBC or were you looking forward to seeing more?

Me and my husband were a fan of the show. We watched it from the begining till it was rudely interruped and pulled from it’s slot. We enjoyed watching Craig and his cast and couldn’t get enough of the show. We were clued to the edge of our seats waiting for the next show.
We are hoping that another channel will pick it up.
Btw: 3.3 million viewers is alot . There are so many other stupid show’s that are on come on get a clue………
im devastated! this is my favourite show, i’ve seen every episode and i loved it. The cast is just fenomenal as well as the story line of each episode.I really hope they will continue to shoot new episodes. WE NEED “THE LISTENER”
i was shocked & very upset to learn the listener had been cancled! i liked this show & watched every episode! i’m very dissapointed with nbc’s decision; why didn’t they cancel the philanthropist instead? the listener was much better than that show! and it didn’t hurt that caig olejnik was so good looking!
It has been a long time since I found a drama that I enjoyed. I am saddened by this news.
CRY CRY CRY CRY CRY CRY CRY CRY! when i didnt see it on tv on thursday i just bawled! i luv this show and i luv craig olejnik! I LUV HIM! and robert pattinson of course! pleaz make more i luv this show
OMG! THE LISTENER IS aMAZING! knowing it will be on on thursdays keep me going the whole week! i dont think i could live without it! if it wasnt on anymore i dont know WHAT id do pleaz make more! PLEAZ!
I’m really ticked about NBC pulling “The Listener” which is one of my favorite shows. I’d love to know how it got poor ratings, many of my friends & relatives were hooked as well. i don’t think it was given a fair amount of time & NBC dropped the ball on this one. Although I watch this network more than any others combined, I hope someone else picks it up & runs it.
I Was really up set that they took the listener off the air.. i was looking forward to watching it and did not know why it was not on, i think they should bring it back on , it was a really good show. and look forward to watching it every week , this is a better show than some of the junck that they air.
Bring back the lisitner…. me and my husband like it a lot. and so does our friends. …
this sux, i think they need to bring it back and this time with a little bit more promoting, i started watching it like episode 5 or 6 cause i didnt even know it was on until i was flippin through the channels and it caught my eye.
I agree, they should have this show on earlier in the week, this show is my favourite, it’s got interesting story lines, and it has no sex and gory (sp?) parts, it has just the right amount of action. If they don’t make a season 2 I will be devasted!! Give it time you will never know if the show will become popular if you don’t give it time and change the day!
Gosh, I’m really, really sad. I liked the show and agree w/ the comments as soon as something good w/o sex, drugs and violence airs then less interest. We’ll my husband and I were very interested in this show and I will miss it. I will eagerly await the remaining eposides on line.
GOD, they just care about themselves. what about the people who actually liked the show. people need to have a little bit more patience
Finally a show for the whole family and NBC pulls it off the air. No gratuitous sex and violence. A likeable star and cast and interesting story lines. Please bring this show back, even if it’s on a different night. Try advertising its return more than you did the debut and maybe you’d get a wider audience. Please bring The Listener back!
Dammit! everytime i like a show it seems to get the axe! Nbc could have moved the show until it found a good spot, these networks never give a show a chance anymore. To heck with NBC i will stick to CBS
I completly agree with the whole BC not givign this a chance thing. Their biggest mistake was that they chose to air a big show like this on Thur. and on top of that i didnt see much publicity about the show b4 it started nor while it was airing. I think if they really wanted this show to make it big then they should have put it on a more popular night like Tues or Wed when. Or given it more coverage on commercial publicity. I mean lets look at Heros. Its all u heard about EVERYWHERE b4 it… Read more »
