There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

I really liked Jericho and Cane also. They would of made a lot of money on DVD’s on Jericho years later and on TV syndication.
The Unit cancellation is just amazing. I hope another network picks it up while it’s still fresh in people’s minds. Come on Fox TV, since you produced it (according to article). How about on FX? Be more real like on “The Shield” (some bad words), but not too many so younger people could still watch it with their parents.
The Unit was GREAT show, and I really am annoyed that CBS ended it, especially with Molly leaving Jonas, since Jonas wouldn’t leave the Unit!!!
CBS has canceled every single drama I’ve gotten into lately: Jericho, Cane, and The Unit. Maybe I need to leave CBS shows alone, because the good ones never survive.
Amen!!
The problem is not the show, the problem is CBS. If this show was on another channel it would be a great hit. I have never watched CBS but I came across “the Unit” in Best Buy and since watched all four seasons in succession. I loved this show and so did everyone I told to watch it. I was surprised when I read that the audience was 55 because I, as well as my friends are all around 25 years old. I just think that CBS carries a older audience…
Yup I’m willing to bet if this was a showtime series, it would of scored at least 6 full series, look at Weeds, it’s going into it’s 6th season and it had less viewers than The Unit. I think showtime or HBO should really take a shot with The Unit.
What a shame! My family and I have been waiting on the return of The Unit. We had no idea it had been cancelled until I looked on the internet tonight. It was the only drama we watched on CBS. My son and husband are going to be so disappointed!
OMG why did they cancel that… OMG the most favourite and coolest show ever… i dont understand the producters…why?
Are they out of their minds? Everytime something good comes on, they end up taking it off. Shame on you CBS!!! Go count your damn beans………..
yea, bunch of network BS. I hate it went off, maybe we can get a reunion show or something to tie up loose ends
The Unit was a very good showm It should not have been cancelled. .It was one of my favorite shows.
Why ???? that was the best show you had going looks like I will have to change the chanel now to FOX you blew it on that one. When it only cost haft as much to make as other shows that were not made as well they may get higher ratings because people fall a sleep watching them. Wake us up bring back are show thanks Kal
well i gotta say, im sad to hear that The Unit wont be showing no more… its the best series ive seen out there..
i really really hope that some day they will see the error in their decision and start it up again..
X fingers and hope
It’s no wonder why GE is getting out of CBS – poor management
how could you remove the best show on CBS i have to be the biggest fan of the unit and i dont understand why you would remove it. It obvisouly is cheaper than most primetime dramas. there should be more than one more season for the unit. i believe the reason it wasnt so popular as these other shows is because it wasnt advertised as much as they are so people didnt get to see the unit. you should rejoin the unit to make ALOT more seasons!!!
This show was great. It is the only 1 hour show my mom and I watched together. She really doesn’t like war or militrary stuff, but for some reason she really loves this show. This and The Office were the only two that she would watch or want recorded. I was wondering if it was coming back on since I haven’t seen any previews for 2010 like I have for 24. I really hope some other network picks it up. I think it would make a lot in syndication over the years or on DVD’sor BluRay. It would probably be… Read more »
I am very disappointed that CBS decided to cancel The Unit. Excellent Show! Intelligent Characters! A show that allowed you to think!
BIG mistake taking ‘The Unit’ off!! We already have too many so called ‘reality’ shows! At least let it be on a different channel.
