To little surprise, CBS has pulled Three Rivers from the Sunday night schedule, effective immediately. Will the show be back? Has it been cancelled?
Three Rivers follows a group of dedicated doctors and medical staffers who help those in need of organ transplants. The series stars Alex O’Loughlin, Katherine Moennig, Daniel Henney, Justina Machado, Christopher Hanke, Amber Clayton, and Alfre Woodard.
The medical drama got off to a slow start in the ratings back in early October. Unfortunately, the numbers only got worse as the weeks wore on and it became a likely candidate for early cancellation.
To CBS’ credit, the network has been patient with the series and has kept it on the air. Two weeks ago, the network tried switching timeslots with Cold Case. While the veteran crime drama benefited from the time change and attracted more viewers, Three Rivers did not.
Three Rivers has now been pulled from the Sunday night schedule. As expected, Cold Case will slip into the earlier timeslot and repeats of various crime dramas will take over at 10pm.
A CBS spokesperson has said that Three Rivers’ fate has not yet been decided but the network has not ordered any additional installments beyond the initial 13 episodes.
Eight episodes of the drama have been aired, leaving five on the shelf. CBS will likely burn them off either on Saturdays or during the summer months but, unless the execs have a major change of heart, Three Rivers is essentially cancelled.
What do you think? What went wrong with Three Rivers? Is Sunday night football to blame for the show’s failure to attract more viewers or was the show flawed?

My family enjoyed watching Three Rivers, we thought the show was well done. The actors also did a great job. My son had a double lung transplant at age 37 9 months ago, and we found most of the show quite realistic. Shows are not given a chance to build an audience. It didn’t help either when football ran late and all the shows then came on at different times every week.
I hope this show in its short time on the air helped to educate people about organ donation/transplantation. It truly is a gift of life.
I liked Three Rivers because I was born in Pittsgburgh and liked hearing the various cities and neighborhoods mentioned such as Mt. Washington. Pittsburgh is a nice place and has a beautiful skyline and enjoyed watching that. The premise was good but I think the show was a little sappy. Go back to more medical drama. We need shows like Medical Center, Marcus Welby and Trapper John. Show medical procedures and not doctors sleeping around like that of NBC’s Mercy. That’s just plain TRASH.
OMG ARE YOU SERIOUS …….. DO YOU ALL HAVE SOMETHING AGAINST ALEX O’LOUGHLIN!!! I LOVE HIM …… HE’S GREAT NOT TO MENTION GORGEOUS!! NOW WHAT ………. CBS …….. WHAT NEXT!!!
It doesn’t matter what us viewers think, everytime they bring in a good show no matter what network, that is family watchable, it gets cancelled. Everytime I start watching a show and get hooked on it, they cancel saying ratings are not high enough. How do you determine ratings, you havent called us folks that liked it. If you put a poll online then we could vote. If its not a show with ugly talking, nude scenes, violence, it dont have a chance. BRING IT BACK PLEASE, maybe move to another night, too many football fans in America that watches… Read more »
WHAT THE HECK, WHY DOES YOUR NETWORK AND ALL THE OTHER NETWORKS CANCEL GREAT SHOWS LIKE THREE RIVERS, YOU PUT ON THOSE STUPID STUPID REALALITY SHOWS, LIKE THE BACHLOR THAT IS ONE OF THE MOST WORST SHOWS I HAVE EVERY WATCHED AND THE REALALITY SHOW THE ONE THAT FINDS LONG LOST CHILDREN WHATEVER, PUT THREE RIVERS BACK ON, OR DID THE PRESIDENT HAVE SOME THING TO DO WITH CANCELING THIS PARTICULAR SHOW, SINCE NBC ABC CBS IS A STATE RUN MEDIA, AND THE PRESIDENT DICTATES WHAT YOUR NETWORK SHOWS. THIS SHOW HAPPENED TO BE ABOUT THE MEDICAL FIELD? US AMERICANS… Read more »
So, all of the broadcast networks are “state run media”? Really? When did that happen? I’m sure the investors would be shocked by this allegation. And no, the President didn’t have anything to do with canceling this particular show. I’m sure President Obama has lots of time available to sit down and watch tv shows………and decide which ones should get canceled……..or dictates what any network puts on the air……NOT!
Pam, You are right on the mark. B.H.O. wants to run everything in this country and in our private homes. Maybe a wonderful show about transplants would make more people think about it and then it would cost his precious OBAMACARE more money. He is already trying to kill off our elderly and disabled (such as myself) so he certainly does not want something like transplants to be promoted.
Lorrie, you can’t seriously believe what you wrote. Where do you get the idea that Obama is trying to “kill off our elderly and disabled”? What makes you think the president of the United States dictates to the broadcast networks what they will/will not show? TV shows live or die by Nielsen ratings; ratings = advertising dollars that networks can charge for the ads that air during the programs. Low ratings = show getting canceled because the advertising revenue isn’t there. The ratings for Three Rivers were low; the show just couldn’t bring in the viewers when it was put… Read more »
I am also disgusted.. I really enjoyed This show. I will admit I prefer Alex O in the edgier role of Mick on Moonlight.. But I felt sure we would soon get to conect on a more personal level with the cast.. As my only dissapointment in the show was it mainly revolved around the patients and very little around the Dr’s.. But given enough time and smart writing it could be a gret show. I dont know why these Networks set these shows up to fail. We Lost , My own worst Enemy Moonlight Eastwick and now Three Rivers… Read more »
THREE RIVERS IS AN AWSOME SHOW !!!!! PLEASE PLEASE DON’T GET RID OF SUCH AN AWSOME SHOW , IT’S THE ONLY THING MYSELF AND MY HUSBAND AND MOTHER WATCH ON SUNDAY NIGHT.
THERE ARE SO FEW SHOW’S THAT REALLY ARE HEART TOUCHING, THIS DAY AND TIME WE NEED THESE POSITVE SHOW’S.
Three Rivers is a great show and doesn’t deserve to be cancelled. Put it on Wed ,Fri, or Sat when there is nothing on. Silly sitcoms stay on forever but good shows are always taken off.
What is going on here, everytime you get a show that really is great, you cancell it. There are far more worst shows tthat are on the air. This show me and my son loved to watch. On one show alone he told me that if any thing every happen to him, that he wants his organs to be donated. And he is only 12. But there are shows like Family Guy, that does not deserive the air space. You need to get of your high horse, and bring it back on the air. This show shows compassion, heart, love… Read more »
I agree with the rest of the comments – Three Rivers is a great show and I am really sad and upset it is no longer on. For those of us who do not watch football, it really gave me something to look forward to on Sunday night. Please bring the show back!!!!!!!!!!!
I am really disappointed that Three Rivers has been canceled. I watched it faithfully and enjoyed it so much. Maybe it is because I worked in a hospital for 39 years that it was interesting to me. I think it should be brought back on a different night. Friday nights have a bunch of junk on all networks. It would be great to have one great show to watch.
CBS please bring back three rivers. This was the only show I looked forward to watching
on sunday nights ! Maybe if you changed the time slot? This is a great show. Why do
you people get rid of all the good shows? You cancelled moon light also, and I loved that show too! Come on bring three rivers back ! This is one of the few shows that kept me watching this network!!
Sunday night football was/is definitely this show’s downfall — it was hard to tell when it would start and sometimes it would be over an hour past the scheduled time. This is a very high qualify drama (very unusual nowdays) and it should be moved to another day — not cancelled.
I am sooo upset. I loved that show. I work for a cardiologist and it’s neat to watch a program and know whats going on and understand the terminology. I hope the show will come back.
I think this was a good show and there are very few good shows on the air now. It seems that they cancel anything that is a little different. The lowest common denominator seems to rule.
I am disappointed in the network for cancelling this show.
I wish they would give it another chance. Adults would like something too. Don’t just cater to teenagers.
BRING IT BACK, PLEASE.
