To little surprise, CBS has pulled Three Rivers from the Sunday night schedule, effective immediately. Will the show be back? Has it been cancelled?
Three Rivers follows a group of dedicated doctors and medical staffers who help those in need of organ transplants. The series stars Alex O’Loughlin, Katherine Moennig, Daniel Henney, Justina Machado, Christopher Hanke, Amber Clayton, and Alfre Woodard.
The medical drama got off to a slow start in the ratings back in early October. Unfortunately, the numbers only got worse as the weeks wore on and it became a likely candidate for early cancellation.
To CBS’ credit, the network has been patient with the series and has kept it on the air. Two weeks ago, the network tried switching timeslots with Cold Case. While the veteran crime drama benefited from the time change and attracted more viewers, Three Rivers did not.
Three Rivers has now been pulled from the Sunday night schedule. As expected, Cold Case will slip into the earlier timeslot and repeats of various crime dramas will take over at 10pm.
A CBS spokesperson has said that Three Rivers’ fate has not yet been decided but the network has not ordered any additional installments beyond the initial 13 episodes.
Eight episodes of the drama have been aired, leaving five on the shelf. CBS will likely burn them off either on Saturdays or during the summer months but, unless the execs have a major change of heart, Three Rivers is essentially cancelled.
What do you think? What went wrong with Three Rivers? Is Sunday night football to blame for the show’s failure to attract more viewers or was the show flawed?

My sons and I love this show. CBS should try it on a different night of the week before they decide to cancell it. This is the reason more and more people are turning to new shows on cable channels.
I was furious that Three Rivers did not air last night. If CBS was a person, I’d say they are a bad mannered jerk. I couldn’t figure out what happened; it was touted in the tv highlights section and then, some old re-run was on. Outrageous. Why can’t the network just air the last few shows? It’s not fair to give no warning when the network decides to cancel a show. They could have at least made an announcement over their affiliate stations. Oh but, why bother to actually treat viewers like they matter. Only ratings matter. And yes, I’m… Read more »
I’ve noticed over the last few years the best shows get cancelled. Maybe they rate them by how many teenagers watch them, and they are usually hanging out with their friends, not watching tv like older people like me. Obviously whoevers in charge at all the networks for primetime shows don’t care what real people like. Three Rivers is just one of many cancelled excellent shows. I shake my head and hope and pray for the best.
CBS please bring back Three Rivers each and every episode was great too bad I deleted them from my DVR… This show was so similar to Chicago Hope very compelling and heartwarming you will trully be missed by me and my daughter we would DVD each episode since were very busy and watch it later on together. These are the kind of shows that the whole family can watch CBS please please bring back Three Rivers…
I have to admit that when I first read/heard the premise for “Three Rivers” I was doubtful about a continuing series centered on organ transplants. I thought it would be the same old thing each week and it would quickly get stale. But after seeing a couple episodes I quickly found out how wrong I was. “Three Rivers” is/was an excellent medical drama and the Mandy Patinkin episode was absolutely incredible. Kudos to the actors, writers, producers et al for handling a difficult topic in such a loving, courageous , dignified manner. The show was intelligent, engaging, thought provoking and… Read more »
I never believed in the ratings that are supposedly compiled by the networks. I don’t think they adequately count every TV that is watching a show. I have seen too many really, really good shows cancelled. I watch C.S.I. and that is the only cop drama viewed by me. I am sick of all the others cop drama shows. Crimial Minds is especially SICK.
Sunday Night Football Killed this show. Everytime I sat down to watch it the time was pushed back because football ran over or they changed the time slot with out letting people know. They should give it another chance but make sure that if it is going to be on at 9 make sure that it is on at 9.
The programmers at CBS are foolish. “Three Rivers”, which would draw more intelligent viewers, should never have been slotted after inane fare like “Amazing Race”, not to mention the delays from football. Even extending recording time considerably, I failed to tape the endings of a number of episodes. Good show, good cast, with respectable ratings (if one actually checks ratings listings each week), but CBS is pulling it because it didn’t do as well as they had hoped. If they want high ratings, I guess they will have to go for idiocy or plenty of sex. It’s regrettable that they… Read more »
yet again another good show is gone….what is wrong at the top!does anyone listen to the tv viewers? sunday football sch’d sure does mess up viewing times….. i guess money talks ! !
Loved the show. You’re right. Mandy Patinkin deserves an award for that show. He was amazing–as was the show.
Hope they bring it back!!!
I cannot believe CBS has dropped Three Rivers. Why is it that all of the good shows that portray positive outlooks on life get the can. Think of Touched By An Angel, The Promised Land, Chicago Hope, ER……These were good wholesome shows that the family could watch together. My five year old would ask me to let her stay up to watch Three Rivers. She would get so into the show and would really comprehend what was happening. I am very saddened that CBS pulled the plug on this show so early. The episode with Mandy Patinkin was truly unbelievable.… Read more »
I loved Three Rivers D:
This is upsetting.. so many good plotlines wasted…
Please do not cancel Three Rivers, this show is one of the best shows out there. I watch all the CBS shows and none of them get to me like this one. Maybe switch to a different night and see how the ratings go. I love Moonlight also and for the life of me I can not figure out why all the good shows get cancelled.
I totally agree with the other comments……………..Cold case is not good and I change the channel every time it comes on…………………Reality TV stinks so I guess I will read books and skip TV……………………The only thing worth watching are sports, Trauma, Eastwick, Grey’s Anatomy and that’s it…………………
I loved Three Rivers and am very upset it was canceled. The doctors were awesome and now there is nothing on Sunday nights I look forward to. I have heard quite a few others who really enjoyed it………………………….
