Last May, NBC announced that it would be adding two new medical shows. Trauma would begin airing in the Fall and Mercy would come in early 2010. That plan got messed up when production on Parenthood, another new show, was delayed, and Mercy was brought in early to take its place.
With two new medical dramas on the network, many suspected there was going to be one too many. A few months later, one is struggling to survive and the other has been effectively cancelled.
Trauma revolves around a group of first responder paramedics in San Francisco. The high-action series is populated by an ensemble cast that includes Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney.
The drama has had problems attracting viewers from the beginning. Its premiere only attracted 6.68 million viewers and a 2.2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers sank to 5.36 million and a 1.7/4. The numbers have been rising slowly since then but not by much. Monday’s episode hit a post-premiere high of 5.77 million and a 1.9/5, putting the show in fourth place for the timeslot.
To no surprise, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Trauma. While all 13 episodes of the series will be aired, the network won’t be ordering any more. It’s unknown if the cast and crew will be able to give the show any closure by the last episode.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that Trauma is ending or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?
UPDATE: Trauma returning with new episodes.

I loved this show! My girlfriend is in school to be a paramedic and I’m a healthcare professional. I truly feel that there is too much reality t.v. and not enough “t.v. shows” made by some creative people. I am very disappointed that this show was canceled and I’m pretty sure that I will be canceling cable because all there is on t.v. is crap. Lets get out of peoples “real” lives and get back to being creative-like trauma.
I am so upset that this show has been canceled. I loved this show.
I finally find a tv show that I like then they cancell it what a drag.
I can’t believe NBC! Trauma is a great show with lots of action, I’ve been getting several people to start recording it and now they pull the plug!!
I would bet if it was moved to a diff night and given a chance it would produce results! It was my favorite show and I’m pissed
It really sucks that they cancelled Trauma!! It was a great show…Ever since ER has been gone, I have been looking for another medical show and finally found one, and now, they cancel it…that’s bull!
I loved Trauma, actually recorded it and watch it on Wed; as nothing else is on good on Wed. Bad move to stop Trauma. Monday is a bad day as most are going to watch Football. moe it to Wed and you will be fine.
First Las Vegas, then Medium and My Name is Earl, and now Trauma gets canceled! All while leaving Heros on the air and moving Leno to 10 o’clock. Who’s making the decisions over there? It’s surprising they haven’t cancelled 30 Rock yet! I think I’m done with NBC.
I’ve written a letter to the chairman of NBC, asking that the show be brought back…every letter will help, but if they don’t bring it back–hopefully another network WILL pick it up. Jo, that’s an AWESOME idea–if HBO picked up Trauma, we could see a lot more medical procedure, etc. Great! Go–write letters and don’t forget to sign the petition!
Once again, they put on a new show only to cancel it after you get hooked. I’ve already started this year not watching alot of the new shows for that reason. So, go ahead networks, you are loosing the viewers to cable shows that actually give their shows a shot. Trauma should be picked up by HBO!
Maybe the ratings were bad because it was competing against Monday Night Football? Try showing it on another evening, and I bet ratings would be better. We are going to miss Trauma.
Bad decision by NBC!
I think that is bull! I love watching Trauma, it has become one of my husbands and my favorite shows. I dont want it to be canceled.
I loved this show and would tape it rather than miss an episode…..bring it back………….
NBC …… TRAUMA will be missed… PLEASE bring it back!
great show!
Please change your mind. It’s a great show!!!!
I am sick of networks cancelling great dramas and keeping crappy reality shows, talk shows and sitcoms. There are many intelligent people who like to have high quality dramas such as Trauma to watch. I wish networks would take their head out 0f their ass and listen to their viewers!!!
