Last May, NBC announced that it would be adding two new medical shows. Trauma would begin airing in the Fall and Mercy would come in early 2010. That plan got messed up when production on Parenthood, another new show, was delayed, and Mercy was brought in early to take its place.
With two new medical dramas on the network, many suspected there was going to be one too many. A few months later, one is struggling to survive and the other has been effectively cancelled.
Trauma revolves around a group of first responder paramedics in San Francisco. The high-action series is populated by an ensemble cast that includes Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney.
The drama has had problems attracting viewers from the beginning. Its premiere only attracted 6.68 million viewers and a 2.2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers sank to 5.36 million and a 1.7/4. The numbers have been rising slowly since then but not by much. Monday’s episode hit a post-premiere high of 5.77 million and a 1.9/5, putting the show in fourth place for the timeslot.
To no surprise, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Trauma. While all 13 episodes of the series will be aired, the network won’t be ordering any more. It’s unknown if the cast and crew will be able to give the show any closure by the last episode.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that Trauma is ending or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?
UPDATE: Trauma returning with new episodes.

Have been watching for Trama to start again and was unaware of the cancellation. It was the best medical show (certainly not Mercy) and so we are very disappointed. Too bad NBC picked it to cancel. Would sure like to see them reconsider that decision!! Bring it back – sooner the better.
NBC is making a mistake.
Trauma is a really good show and they not giving the show a chance.
I’m sure there’s been worse shows than this.
Give this show another chance. It won’t happen over night but it will happen.
I must say that finding out one of the better new shows that I was becoming attached to has been cancelled. I find it quite disappointing. Along with the debacle of moving Jay Leno from his 11:30 time slot to 10:00, perhaps they will have learned a thing or two. Put Trauma back on the line-up!
I am bummed. I’ve never been a big watcher of TV series. I’d rather watch movies or read a book. But “Trauma” caught my eye and sparked my interest. My wife is a nurse, and we enjoyed catching the show together. Interesting situations, well-developed characters, good stories told. I guess, though, when you think of other exceptional series in TV history that failed to find an audience (“Star Trek” comes to mind), “Trauma” is in good company. I’m sorry to see it go.
Thid is awful finally a great show and of course NBC cancels it. They should listen to the audience. Shows like Jay Leno is a true bust. But no………… always make the wrong choices.
I agree that NBC is making a bad call, Trauma is a very good show, much better than Mercy.
NBC has a history of making bad decisions regarding the shows that it cancels. Like a little show called Star Trek that they felt had no future and stopped production on.
I enjoyed watching Trauma. I found this a much more interesting show than Mercy. I am sorry to see it go, as so many shows in the past that I also enjoyed. It is beginning to seem that there is no reason to start watching a new show because as soon as you start looking forward to it each week they cancel it. NBC is no longer a network that offers a lot of interesting things to watch. ABC and CBS are by far the better networks in prime time. It would be nice if they gave new shows and… Read more »
I am very disappointed that Trauma is being cancelled. I am studying to become a flight nurse/paramedic so the show was right up my alley. Apart from that, I also thought the show was fresh and exciting and didn’t get too caught up in the character drama like most night time dramas (i.e. Grey’s Anatomy/last 10 seasons of e.r.).
Its too bad Trauma has been cancelled. It was a great show and the presmise was fresh. The cast was excellant and the writing good. If the network would let a show like this run for a while it would find a following. They are too quick to cancel new shows that arn’t an immediate hit.
I loved Trauma, it was a new option. We have tons of blood, guts gore medical or, lawyers, legal, etc. Trauma was fresh. The copters, the 1st responders were great, but Rabbit and crew were snappy and fun to watch. NBC blew this one, with the right promotion it would have done well. This show had the most exciting premiere of any show on this season!
NBC has sold or canceled all my favorite shows. Trauma was the last reason to watch NBC, they sold medium and south land. Who ever is running this network does not know what they are doing!
I really like Trauma! From the first episode I was hooked and I am glad they are coming back with more episodes but I am sad that they are wanting to take it off the air. Why do they always take away the shows that I like? Do they really think that millions of watchers is not a good following? Shoot, you have reality TV shows that are dumber than hair that stay on the air but a smart, energy charged, enthralling series they want to pull? Come on….really people, really?
I too loved Trauma and am very disappointed that it is going to be canceled. I would love for the show to be put in Jay Leno’s spot. It would be a much better use of the time slot!
When you look at how many crime scene shows are on, how can you say that there are too many medical shows. We have Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and Trauma. BRING TRAUMA BACK!!
Hey,
Thank you WindyKat for mentioning when Trauma will be Back. I have missed this show so much. I can’t believe it is coming back, how did you find out? Trauma Rocks!!!! Who ever doesn’t like the show, here’s a thought don’t watch it. But the cast is amazing and I am glad to hear it will be returning in March. Please NBC give this show a chance to make some success. It is truly the best medical show I have ever seen.
