Last May, NBC announced that it would be adding two new medical shows. Trauma would begin airing in the Fall and Mercy would come in early 2010. That plan got messed up when production on Parenthood, another new show, was delayed, and Mercy was brought in early to take its place.
With two new medical dramas on the network, many suspected there was going to be one too many. A few months later, one is struggling to survive and the other has been effectively cancelled.
Trauma revolves around a group of first responder paramedics in San Francisco. The high-action series is populated by an ensemble cast that includes Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney.
The drama has had problems attracting viewers from the beginning. Its premiere only attracted 6.68 million viewers and a 2.2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers sank to 5.36 million and a 1.7/4. The numbers have been rising slowly since then but not by much. Monday’s episode hit a post-premiere high of 5.77 million and a 1.9/5, putting the show in fourth place for the timeslot.
To no surprise, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Trauma. While all 13 episodes of the series will be aired, the network won’t be ordering any more. It’s unknown if the cast and crew will be able to give the show any closure by the last episode.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that Trauma is ending or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?
UPDATE: Trauma returning with new episodes.

I am very dissappointed that they cancelled the show. I looked forward to Mon. nights. I think I’ll boycott the network now and not watch Mercy which is ok Trauma was better.
TRAUMA was one of the best shows on the season — I am extremely disappointed that they canceled it.
Let’s face it; the show sucked. The characters were weak. The character “Rabbit” I was hoping would die — he is an arrogant prick. I only watched one episode — the one with the plane landing without landing gear on the ground (!!!) only a few feet from the San Francisco bay (where a pilot with a modicum of training would land a plane without landing gear) only to burst into flames! The incompetence of the characters is superseded only by the writers of the show.
NBC is so bad these days I’m surprised it’s not in bankruptcy.
I loved Trauma. Bring it back !!!!
EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED IN NBC!!! You get great shows and you cancel them. Why do you do that???!!!! Remember Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip? GREAT SHOW! What did you do??? YOU CANCELED IT! TRAUMA?? Really??? This is an awesome show. Your stats say “only” 6 million viewers. How do you know? I mean really. How do you know! How about the millions and millions that DVR the show? Record those stats? You blew it again NBC. Stop failing me or you will lose me forever.
Please bring back Trauma!!!!!!!!!!! I thought that it was so much like the old 70s show Emergency that I loved so much only revised. What do we have to do to keep the good shows and get rid of the ones that are garbage????
This is one of the best shows that have been on in a while. I CAN NOT believe that they are canceling this show already!
There are very few medical shows out there that actually capture what it is like to be a paramedic. I loved this show, and I am disappointed that NBC has canceled it. I guess the only medical shows that will make it on TV are those that do not even almost portray the medical field (ie House) as it truly is.
Please bring back Trauma, best show in 2009, looked forward to see it every week and still looking for it…… – and please loose the stupid reality shows – The big Loser – The Bachelor and skip the endless repeat of Law and Order. I am wondering what is NBC thinking….
What a great show! I can’t believe they are cancelling this show. I have been wondering when it was coming back on, especially since the holidays are over. This show is awesome. They should reconsider!
My husband and I both liked Trauma. It was so different. We don’t care for “Mercy” at all, but Trauma was very good. We would like to see it return to T.V.
VERY DISAPPOINTED IN NBC !!! Trauma was one of best “new” shows I’ve watched in the past couple of years! Mercy is the 2nd best…and if they cancel it, I’m done with NBC for the year! I’m a former 1st Responder EMT and it was actually good to see a TV show with some sense of reality! I only watch 3-4 shows during the week…and I’m now down to (3)! I’m totally sick of “Reality” shows…don’t these people have lives to attend to? NBC…get your act together before you lose what little audience you have left!!!
There could be a whole lot of profanity coming out of my mouth right now for the cancelation of this show. It was the one show at a decent hour that my husband and I agreed on to watch together. It was very realistic and funny at the same time. The drama was intense and how could they cancel this show. They should give it another shot, maybe it will get picked up by another network. I am kinda sick of Heros anyway. NBC drops ER and made the best decision with adding Trauma. VERY VERY VERY disappointed. I went… Read more »
I agree – cancelling this show SUCKS – FINALLY the network came up with a show that wasnt just about who was sleeping with whoom. SOME of us don’t CARE who sleeps with whom – BRING BACK TRAUMA!!!!
I think cancelling Trauma was not a very bright idea, it was one of my favorite shows and looked foward to seeing it each week. It seems that they want to cancel all of the great shows to put on rediculous reality shows.
ANGRY thats how i feel!!!!!!!! there are no other words to say what i feel!!!!
I Love Trauma !!!! It is the BEST NEW show of the year. I have been waiting for it to come back from the holidays. So, I log on to find out when it will be returning, only to find out it has been cancelled. What is up with NBC lately? NBC seems to making poor judgement calls, i.e.,the Late Night Shows. Conan should have been able to keep his job.
Anyway, BRING BACK TRAUMA !!!
