One of the producers of the new V thinks there’s still a chance that TV show will be renewed for season three. On the show’s official Facebook page, Steve Pearlman wrote: “Despite what you read online, the ratings for V have been OK and the show has a chance of being renewed for a third season.” Is that really true?
For season one, V ended up averaging a 2.25 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 5.7 million average viewers. It was “on the bubble” but ended up being renewed for season two. ABC has a history of taking a chance on struggling freshman shows and decided to bet on this one over lower-rated FlashForward. Sometimes the network’s gambling pays off (Castle) but usually, it doesn’t (Samantha Who?, Better Off Ted, October Road, etc.).
After ABC ordered 13 episodes for season two, the network cut it back to 10 installments. That’s not a good sign but ABC execs supposedly felt they just wouldn’t need as many episodes because of the bevy of original programming they already have. Lots of this season’s new and returning shows haven’t even premiered yet because there’s no room on the schedule.
So far this season, V has been pretty consistent and has averaged a 2.0 in the demo and 6.02 million viewers. While that’s an increase in total viewers, that’s a drop in the key demo which is what really counts. V is currently the second-lowest rated scripted show on the network, just above Detroit 1-8-7 and just below No Ordinary Family.
So, Pearlman is indeed correct that a third season is still possible but, unless the ratings improve, it seems unlikely. ABC gave the series a chance last time and the risk hasn’t paid off for them so far. The ratings have dropped, not improved. If they’re going to take a gamble on a struggling show for next season it would make more sense to try another one.
What do you think? Will the V ratings improve? Will ABC give the series another chance — season three — or will it be cancelled?

Pls pls do not stop this show.
I’ve seen quite a lot of TV shows(nearly 10-15) and this is the best of all. I still wonder why the ratings are still low. Hope they increase and ABC agrees for a 3rd season..!!
Haven’t watched since it went off of hulu/fancast… and don’t have enough interest to purchase it. Then again, I could always watch it on Network TV, if I owned a TV! 😉
I love watching V. I read thre book and own a copy of the original series. This new installment is superior! The cast is excellant and the plot goes into so much more detail. I love how some of the original cast have a presence in the updated version. I watch the episodes that I miss online. I dont know how that works with the ratings but Im willing to bet that many people are doing the same. I am looking forward to another season. I hope that it will continue as it is very entertaining. Look at what Star… Read more »
The Network draw me in, as the spider did the fly. Networks, tease me, with a few episodes. The Networks,Wine and Dine me without no happy ending..The Networks, played with my emotion. Killing cupid, breaking my heart again and again. Leaving me frustrated, wondering have you canceled another Drama/ Sitcom show. Treating me as if, was a stepchild. As if , I was yours to knock around, whenever you wanted too.
Are you also wondering WHY Series Shows seem to be suffering. Hummm, I’ve noticed we no longer have just new shows in the Fall, they’ll be another one in the Winter and Summer. This process produce shorter episode for the series shows. Then we wait six months for next season. Hummm, is process sitting up the our Series Show for failure? Notice, per season, our Series Shows, get round 10-20 episode now, then its “CANCEL” then its up for shortly after… and most of the new series shows r canceled Without “SERIES FINALE”. This process is repeated about every four… Read more »
I had no idea the show V was being considered for cancellation! It simply makes no sense. This is a great show and I would love to see it continue for several seasons! Using one target demographic as the determining factor for whether you keep a show on the air is going to cost ABC its overall viewership – especially since, overall, V is being viewed by more people than before. I have literally stopped watching networks that continuously remove good shows from the weekly line-up. I later purchase the DVD sets of the shows that have been removed –… Read more »
Official viewership is a rating that needs to be “curved” since many people watch it “offline” so to speak, and that group is not accounted for, although being probably 80% or so of the actual viewership. I guess downloads and rips have taken their toll on the income, which is what they’re really basing their renewal decisions on.
I too hope some other network or channel will pick up the series. “Southland” is a good
example. The Neilsons should not be used by networks to judge a series. Oh well…!
Im Iranian ,I love your tv series , All Iraninan In Iran watch and Like please Keep on..
What exactly are the execs aka the Morons in Charge (MICs) at The Scott Peters Company, HDFilms, Warner Bros. TV and ABC smoking /slamming over there? Thinking of cancelling the ONLY GOOD show ABC has in its entire season lineup? Seems this is the same kind of “thinking” and “logic” that brought MySpace to its’ knees. Hello! If it ain’t broke, don’t touch it! “V” has always been a favorite of mine, having seen the original miniseries when I was 14 yrs old in 1983, having seen the sequels and NOW TRYING to follow “V- the series”, but that is… Read more »
ABC…please keep this show. Diverse cast. Unique use of technology! I remember the old show as a child and this new one ROCKS! Please keep this on!
The show itself has continually evolved. It has a good cast, good script, good setting and good continuity. Plenty of drama but it could use more sex and violence (by the Vs) as these types of shows go. Still a winner. It should continue for an additional season(s).
I am still on the edge of my seat.
yes this show rocks and abc should let this go , its opened our minds again , let stop looking and ppl who cant afford the tv or internet to watch i feel that polls are wrong .
ABC, please keep V on the air. It is a good show and ratings are not that bad. I agree with what others have said, that too much reality is not good. If you do not renew, I hope another newtork picks it and its millions of viewers up!
