After five seasons on the air, CBS has killed a staple of the Friday night schedule. Ghost Whisperer won’t be back next fall on the Tiffany network. Not unless it can come back from the dead…
Ghost Whisperer tells the tale of Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt), a young woman with the ability to see and talk to dead people. Regular castmembers over the past five seasons have included David Conrad, Camryn Manheim, Jay Mohr, Aisha Tyler, Christoph Sanders, Jamie Kennedy, and Kenneth Mitchell.
The TV show debuted in September 2005 and the season attracted an average of a 2.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 10.2 million viewers. In seasons two and three, the demo rose to a 3.0 rating with 9.9 and 8.6 million viewers respectively. For season four, the ratings went up again, to a 3.7 rating and 10.6 million viewers.
Unfortunately this year, the ratings fell — a lot. The season kicked off with a 2.3 rating and 8.7 million viewers. Things went further downhill from there. Last month, they hit a series low with a 1.3 rating in the demo and 5.96 million viewers. Though Ghost Whisperer was once a hit show for the network, those times are clearly over.
To little surprise, CBS has decided to cancel Ghost Whisperer. The series finale is set to air this Friday, May 21st.
However, because ABC Studios co-produces the series (with CBS), there have been discussions that it could switch networks. Medium ran for years on NBC before being cancelled and picked up by CBS.
ABC’s entertainment president, Stephen McPherson, has said that he’d be interested in picking up Ghost Whisperer if the series became available. ABC scheduler Jeff Bader told Variety today that they’ve toyed with the idea. He said, “We talked a lot about it. It could make a good lead-in to Body of Proof.”
To keep costs down, ABC has been committed to running only one scripted series on Friday nights but the execs will supposedly look at the possibility of picking up Ghost Whisperer in the next few days.

I JUST WISH I KNEW WHO ARE THE PEOPLE WHO GET TO MAKE THESE DECISIONS TO CANCELL SHOWS THAT DEVASTATE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE. IS ANYONE ACTUALLY GOING TO READ THESE COMMENTS AND IF SO – WILL WE KNOW. CAN YOU JUST TELL IF THERE IS A POSSIBLE CHANCE THAT WE CAN SAVE THE SHOW. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? IS ANYONE WITH ME – LET’S KEEP GHOST WHISPERER AND WE’LL GET RID OF THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE THESE POOR CHOICES THAT DEVASTATE LOYAL – FAITHFUL FANS.
I agree this is horrible news. I had no idea that this was canceled until today when I looked up to see when the next one starts. Very sad.
PLEASE pick up Ghost Whisperer! I love this show. I can’t believe CBS pulled the plug on it because of one season’s worth of BAD WRITING!!!! Please bring Ghost Whisperer back from the dead.
Please bring Ghost Whisperer back, too many good shows get canceled and their fans are left with questions unanswered. ABC, bring back the show, put it on a better night and people would watch it.
I agree I love that show please move it to ABC if CBS doesn’t want to pick it up again. I think it would be great for ABC’s ratings. Please don’t give up on it! I just found out it was cancelled today, because I logged no see when the new season started.

I am so upset. I just found out Ghost Whisper was cancelled. I love this show. I loved the whole Friday night lineup they had. Ghost Whisper, Medium and then Numbers. The perfect Friday night for those of us that stay home and watch TV. I was so looking forward to Aiden’s growing up on the show and finding out what all he inherited from his mom. Please give it back to us.
Please bring Ghost Whisperer back they have much more stories to tell and they deserve a proper series finale.
Dear TV stations please listen to the viewers more they will tell you which shows are the best to watch!!! Ghost Whisperer deserves more credit. They brought in about 9 million viewers per episode + the show is watched in so many countries over the world.
Once again please give them an other chance!!!
Whoever picks up Ghost Whisperer is where I’ll be. I’m about tired of CBS dumping all the good stuff and adding garbage to their line up. CBS dumped all decent daytime programming and now the are dumping all the good prime time programming. Maybe it’s time for CBS to feel that same squeeze.
I agree with you! I really am sick of CBS they don’t make good choices in programing personally i think the network should be cancled period because the just got rid of the last good program on it! it ticks me off!
I was just watching an old Ghost Whisperer on ion Television, and also got to wondering when the new season is set to start. I’m shocked to learn that it has been cancelled! I echo the feelings of others expressed here, it would be a shame to lose this program–if CBS won’t renew it, then please ABC pick it up!

I love this show. Please consider keeping it on the air. I am late in coming to the series but have not watched a single episode that did not leave me in tears.
I also agree that my disappointment over the cancellation of Numbers along with Ghost Whisperer has made me seriously reconsider spending time with CBS.
Please bring Ghost Whisperer back! My co-worker and I are just devastated! PLEASE!
