Right on schedule, CBS has decided to ditch their new Friday night TV series, CHAOS, after just a few weeks on the air. The show stumbled in the ratings right from the start and never recovered. It’s no longer on the air but is it cancelled?
A dramatic comedy, CHAOS follows a small group of CIA misfit spies who make up the Clandestine Administration and Oversight Services (CAOS). In addition to taking on threats to national security, they also must take on redtape and typical government bureaucracy. The TV series stars Freddy Rodriguez, Eric Close, James Murray, Tim Blake Nelson, Carmen Ejogo, Christina Cole, and Kurtwood Smith.
As detailed here, CHAOS debuted to a horrible 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.53 million viewers. That was quite a bit lower than the season average of Medium, a series that CBS cancelled because of poor ratings.
In the second week, CHAOS fell even lower to a 0.9 rating in the demo and 5.73 million viewers. Last Friday night, bumped up ever so slightly in the demo, to a 1.0 rating and 5.683 million. Unfortunately, that was far from enough of a gain to save the TV series.
CBS has pulled CHAOS from the schedule effective immediately. This week, a rerun of CSI: NY will fill the timeshot — and probably get better ratings. Next week, the previously scheduled The Royal Wedding: Modern Majesty will air. Then, beginning on May 6th, new episodes of Flashpoint will take over.
The network has 10 episodes of CHAOS left sitting on the shelf. CBS hasn’t said if there are any plans to release the unaired installments. Though CHAOS hasn’t been officially cancelled yet, there’s no way that they’ll be renewing it for a second season.
UPDATE: A statement from CBS indicates that the show will return to the schedule at some point in the future.
What do you think? Why did the TV show do so poorly, even by Friday night standards? Will you miss CHAOS?

CHAOS was fabulous!!!!! Great cast, innovative scripts, wonderful interaction between all the characters, and overall gripping!! PLEASE bring it back and give it a real chance!! I LOVE this show!!!
Love this show:) Bring it back
This is a great show! It is fun action packed, yet not full of blood and guts all
Over the place. Please let it go on!
I have really enjoyed watching the show since it began. In fact, tonight we had the last two episodes on DVR and my husband and 14year old are now hooked, after the one episode. Trying to find the first couple episodes on line since our Time Warner cable/CBS are not offering it On Demand. Very dissapointed to hear that it might be cancelled. It is nice to have a show that we can all sit down and watch together. CBS give it a chance.
I love the show! I even download it to my droid to make sure I don’t miss an episode. It’s the kind of break I need from a hard day at work. It’s fun. It’s funny. It’s interesting. And I enjoy the characters. I will most assuredly miss it.
Chaos was a great show! CBS really dropped the ball here. I hope
It gets picked up on TBS or USA, where all the really good shows are anyway.
CBS – BOOOOOOOOOOO!
I just found this show and enjoyed it. I am sorry to hear it has been canceled.
I am very tired of reality shows and this was funny and had good story lines.
Why was it not promoted more? I just stumbled upon it by accident.
Really loved this show–come on, CBS! You finally come up with a fresh idea, good writing, good actors–but you don’t promote it! I only found it by accident and then it was a rerun on Sat. pm. Give it another chance! There’s so much garbage on TV–it was refreshing to find something of quality. Hope you wise up and put it back in the schedule–WITH some promos!!!!
CBS missed with the show. It was not shown in order, time and day changed. If it wasn’t for dvr, it would have been impossible to view it. I love the show and hope that CBS will give it a good chance again. Please bring it back!
I like Chaos, it was not a copy of other shows currently airing, but so much for originality. CBS started it on Friday night, it did not have a chance. When I first heard that there was going to be a new show on Friday night I was thrilled. Any show you put on Friday is going to have low viewership. They need to lower their expectations. Give it a chance.
i think the testosterone level here is too high! it’s kinda a guy show, but the characters, while crafty, seem more ‘girl-y’ to me. i don’t like it, we dvr’d it to watch on ‘dry’ nights, but i don’t care if it doesn’t return.
I can’t believe CBS has cancelled such a great show! The story lines are good, as are the
actors in their parts. Please, please bring it back!
Our home of 3 adults enjoyed Chaos. We looked forward to it; especially
With the the summer re-runs. We hope the network well look into bringing
This program back
Just found the show and was going to try to find the first episodes to watch. It is good and I’m sorry to see it go. When you’re not usually home on Friday night there’s a lot that’s missed.
Really liked this show and went out of my way to watch it. So much junk out there and they put something good in a horrible time slot and then yank it. Tell me again why these people make so much money?
I love this show!! Hey CBS you are starting to act like NBC and ABC. Put a good show on, don’t promote it, pull it off for several weeks stick it on another night and then say the “ratings are low” it needs to be cancelled. People are really getting fed up with the networks putting on shows and not giving them a chance. Then you leave its followers wondering what happened. It is like giving someone a book with the last chapter missing. After awhile, people will stop giving you their time and loyality. You would think that your programming… Read more »
