TNT has pulled the plug on their medical drama, HawthoRNe. The Jada Pinkett Smith TV series has been cancelled after three seasons on the air.
The cancellation news comes following the end of the third season a couple weeks ago. Despite having a strong start in its freshman year, HawthoRNe’s ratings have declined over the past two seasons.
Year three ended up averaging a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.51 million viewers, a loss of 22% and 19% when compared to season two. Year two had averaged a 0.9 in the demo and 3.09 million, a decline of 18% and 9% from season one.
When compared to TNT’s other summer shows, season three HawthoRNe had one of the cable channel’s smallest audiences. Only already-cancelled Men of a Certain Age had worse numbers.
In a statement, TNT said, “TNT has decided not to order a fourth season of Hawthorne. TNT truly appreciates the tremendous dedication of everyone involved in Hawthorne. The series gave TNT the opportunity to work with many outstanding people, including Jada Pinkett Smith and the rest of the show’s talented cast, crew, producers and writers. We wish everyone involved with Hawthorne nothing but the best.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that HawthoRNe has been cancelled? Why do you think people stopped watching? What would you liked to have seen happen in season four?

What r writes for? They r paid to write, so rewrite some better scripts!! I LOVED THE SHOW NO MATTER WHAT! THESE NETWORKS DOESN’T GIVE ANYONE A CHANCE. THEY ALWAYS GO BY SOME RATINGS, STOP AND SEE WHAT COULD BE DONE BEFORE CANCELLATION. LOOK WHAT HAPPEN TO TJE GAME, PEOPLE STARTING WATCHING RERUNS. THE GAME, ORIGINAL HAD A BAD TIMES SLOT. DON’T GIVE UP HAWTHORN, THERE R OTHER NETWORKS.
I enjoyed the first two seasons very much. It was also about the medical/hospital setting and bringing two people together who loved each other very much. Then in the third season it was all over the place and bringing Marc Anthony in just to split up this loving couple was wrong. And then to leave the show in that position where Marc Anthony was shot and not know who did it????Well that is wrong, just wrong!!! I hate it when ya’ll decide to cancel shows in the middle of something and leave us hanging out there with no answers. that… Read more »
I think the 3rd season was just too dark. The tragedy of losing the baby was too much, but Tom and Christina (in the real world) would have dealt with it together. Nick was just too much; he didn’t belong in this story line. Watching him and Christina in their dark and dirty exploits, I knew that there would be no Season 4 – this is not why people wanted to watch the show. The timing of the cancellation is funny – with the JadaPinkett Smith/Will Smith/Marc Anthony rumours abounding. I loved this show for the 2 first seasons; hoped… Read more »
Loved this show! I am sorry to see it end. I never missed an episode. And of course there was a cliffhanger, so now we’ll never know what happens. TNT has ridiculous programming — breaking up the seasons of their shows — many vieweres don’t know when shows are on or return. I think they’re shooting themselves in the foot by doing this. Hence, look what happened to the fabulous show, Men of a Certrain Age. Same thing!
I think the show lost it’s way by getting too bogged down in personal story lines and not enough about medical/patient/hospital stories. They spent two seasons getting a couple together just to break them up after a few episodes in Season 3 – that was just bad writing. What possessed the writers to think that is where the audience would enjoy seeing that particular story line go? I also don’t think that Marc Anthony is a strong enough actor to carry the role he was playing. If the role has less visibility in Season 3 it probably would have been… Read more »
I enjoy Hawthorne I watched it faithfully until Marc Anthony came along. I do not think he has the following that people had hoped he would bring to the show and the story line of Christina losing her position and the divorce just added to viewers losing interest. The writers can only blame themselves.
I will miss the show I enjoyed watching.
I think I watched the better part of a single episode. It just didn’t work for me. Hopefully, something better will fill the slot. I’m looking forward to TNT shows ‘Perception’ and ‘Gateway’. I am very concerned about the fact that a former ‘Hawthorne’ showrunner is now in charge of ‘The Walking Dead’. I find that to be very disconcerting.
Sadly the plot(s) of HawthoRNe were all over the map; a little sin, a little religion, a little drama, too much drama. There were some interesting and strong characters and the weak ones were bad. Being a RN didn’t help me really like this show. Too much free license with patient care and the running of the hospital. I continued to watch it because of the time i had already invested in the first season. I’m not surprised about the cancellation.
Too bad HawthoRNe will not be back, I became a fan this last season and wanted very much to see how things turned out being that the finale really left you wanting more.
I am so mad that they r cutting hawthorne at one point I had lost my cable but I got it back just to watch this show. Please I really hope they reconsider and give it one more try
Honestly I love the show it kind of remind me of ER in certain ways. But I don’t think this show should be cancel I feel like a lot of people didn’t watch this show because of the timing. I bet if this show was on channel 11 or 13 the ratings would be a lot higher then what it is on tnt. Sometimes when you have a lot of interesting shows viewing at the same time its hard to keep up on what you really want to see. Jada did her thing in this show. I hope they show… Read more »
In my opinion the third season of Hawthorne was all over the place..who gets married to a man…hours later loses the baby by a brutal attack then days later have an affair!!! Dude u just got married!! Had the story line remained the same as the first season with her helping patients with all their issues…the ratings would be better… Bring back quality tv TNT enough of the junk tv and reality shows and immoral content on tv, we see enough in the real world, when will tv viewing be entertaining, and uplifting again!!
Good riddance!
The first season made me proud to be a woman. It depicted strong woman in the medical field. It showed the nurturing of young women and troubled woman. It was about medical issues and the interaction with the staff. Then it began to denigrate to a bad soap opera. Those same women of the first season became neurotic adulteresses, dependent and desperate woman needing men’s approval and home wreaking. The show became bogged down in addicted, troubled people and ceased to be about medical issues and more about the staff’s personal drama. It was awful in the last season.
