After becoming an almost immediate hit for NBC in Fall of 2006, Heroes dropped significantly in the ratings over the past couple seasons. Fans have complained about the storylines but the TV show has been one of the network’s biggest draws in the 18-49 demographic. NBC has opted to cancel it anyway.
Heroes follows a group of ordinary humans who have developed extraordinary powers that end up affecting their lives in positive and negative ways. The series’ large ensemble cast includes Adrian Pasdar, Ali Larter, Cristine Rose, Greg Grunberg, Hayden Panettiere, Jack Coleman, James Kyson Lee, Masi Oka, Milo Ventimiglia, Robert Knepper, Sendhil Ramamurthy, and Zachary Quinto.
The network had reportedly been considering three options to wrap up Heroes — a 13 episode order for mid-season, an order of four to six episodes that could be aired over a couple nights in the fall, or to just cancel the series outright.
Though Heroes still brought NBC some its better 18-49 ratings this season, the numbers just can’t justify costs with a sizable cast and special effects budget. The network has a large selection of new hour-long dramas to choose from and so, has decided to cut Heroes.
On the bright side, NBC is supposedly working on a plan to wrap up the series. Right now, it sounds like there will be a two or four hour event that will air mid-season. The details will revealed at NBC’s upfront presentation on Monday morning.
Over the past day or so, Grunberg has been tweeting and hinting that “the fat lady” was getting ready to sing. As the news broke of Heroes’ cancellation, he wrote, “I’m hearing The FAT LADY singing her ass off!!! #Heroes = Cancelled! Sad. BUT… W/bad news comes GOOD!! My Next Tweet will explain!!” Three hours later, and Grunberg still hasn’t tweeted again.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Heroes has been cancelled or was it long overdue? Will you watch the wrap-up event, whenever or whatever it is?

I wasn’t happy when I learned they were not making a fifth season. It was such a cool show – even though it went a bit downhill and lost its oomph sometime during season 4. I was hoping to see Peter’s powers restored fully, or something along those lines; the final showdown with Samuel didn’t exactly end the series on a strong note.
Still, it will be great if they release a wrap-up movie – much like Firefly’s “Serenity” and Stargate’s “The Ark of Truth” and “Continuum”.
truly sucks so tired of the good shows always being canceled with no closer will be waiting for the series fin…just wont hold our breath you rock nbc…not
It was my favorite show – I am very disappointed that it has been cancelled and as a dedicated fan will be very upset if they don’t wrap ups the loose ends – what is the point in watching anything new that comes out if they leave us empty like that. ARE WE AS FANS the one’s to make happy in order to sucker us into another series????
Man!! I was just wondering what happened to the next season..so I look it up and find this. I was really interested in what was going to happen next. I hated being left hanging. Now I’m even more disappointed. Another good show gets thrown to the dumpster. What a shame! If the next season had a great story line planned, I bet it would’ve recaptured its lost audience members.
I’m sad that Heroes was cancelled, it was the only series I would make time to watch.
🙁
Biggest let down ever! I finally find a show worth watching and they can it, the show is way better than any of these reality shows out now. I’ve been waiting forever for the new season to air again, I undrestand it’s a big cast and very expensive plot to produce but come on NBC heroes was your best show yet! If anything someone should make an on going movie of it at least give us a final show before putting it to rest, don’t leave us hangging!
OMG I do not agree with this idea at all! Heroes has been great, you people are absolutely crazy! and yes of course if they have to end it i will tune in to watch the finale. but i think its a huge mistake!
Who decided to cancel this? and is there no way in talking nbc out of it? I love the heroes series it’s pretty much the only series that had me watching every week for the new episode.
what a very sad thing i guess thay dont want us to watch shows we love….what happens to the familys that watch heros ? we just get tossed to the side ? this is not good nbc!!!!!
We are VERY DISAPPOINTED that Heroes was cancelled. Obviously this show is way beyond what NBC can handle: too sophisticated for them. Either that or $$ is the only thing that motivates them. How can they keep a dedicated following of viewers if they do things like that? Maybe another network will pick it up. Where they go, I go.
Good call!
I absolutely loved heros–the highlight of the week!! I just couldn’t wait to see it, and then, couldn’t wait to talk about it to friends after each show! VERY disappointed and sad to see it end. Bad decision!!!
NBC IS A JERK TO CANCEL HEROES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ENOUGH SAID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh my I’m extremely disappointed. I heard from a friend as I was talking excitedly about the season five coming soon. This is the downside to staying away from the news, I don’t learn about things like this. I am at least excited or the wrap up but absolutely not pleased that they aren’t giving us the last season at least. With all the anticipation And now bam, nothing. Maybe I’m a little late finding out but man that just bums me out. Guess no mote tv for me this season. Without heroes or lost I’m pretty much stuck to… Read more »
My husband and I have been waiting for the next season. We are EXTREMELY disapointed that it has been cancelled. This was our favorite show! I don’t understand how a show like this gets cancelled. I knew so many people that watched it.
First off, this is total BS..like most have said, how does a stupid shows like the Kardashians stay on but a quality show like this doesn’t make it, I just don’t get it! Second- I could be wrong but when I researched how these networks determine their ratings..there seems to be no concrete evidence to support whether or not a show is doing bad or not…so if someone could explain this to me that would be great and yes i read about “Nielsen Media Research”..this way is soooo flawed i just cant believe that this is truly how we get… Read more »
