Lone Star: FOX TV Show Cancelled After Two Episodes

by Trevor Kimball, September 28, 2010

Lone StarWe all saw it coming. One of the most anticipated TV shows of the new fall season, Lone Star, has been cancelled after two episodes.

Lone Star centers around a handsome conman (James Wolk) who lives a double life to swindle investors and an oil tycoon family. He starts to have regrets and struggles to balance both lives and keep everybody happy. Others in the series are Jon Voight, Adrianne Palicki, Bryce Johnson, David Keith, Eloise Mumford, and Mark Deklin.

The FOX series debuted last week to a very disappointing 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.1 million total viewers. Last night, despite several days of buzz and campaigning to get new viewers, the ratings fell even lower to a 1.0 rating in the demo and 3.23 million viewers. As was the case in week one, many people who started watching tuned out before the episode was over. For whatever reason, it just didn’t click.

Lone Star has been cancelled effective immediately and the three remaining unaired episodes have been shelved. There’s no word if FOX will get around to releasing the remaining episodes at some point in the future.

Last week, the cast and crew were shooting the sixth installment. Production has now been shut down and it’s unclear if that episode was completed.

Lone Star’s spot will be filled by the season three premiere of Lie to Me.

What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lone Star be cancelled? If you watched, where do you think it went wrong?

UPDATE: Subsequent reports have indicated that there are six completed episodes with four left unaired.

We watch the show and it wasn’t better than Lie to me but they are two diffrent shows. Started to get interested in it but was surprised when he went back to Midland was watching it at that point just to see how it would play out. Definatley should have at least let it go a whole season.

Bad move. Lone Star should not have been cancelled. This was a great show. Not 24 – but better than Lie to Me. Bring back something comparable to 24.

I thought it was a great show, what programming genius put it on in the time slot against Two and a half Men. My wife and I taped 2/1/2 and watched Lone Star. Grow a pair and put this show back on in a different time slot or day, it will do very well. Give it more than
two weeks………. Geez

My husband and I really enjoyed the show. It was fiction for crying out loud. Not based on real life situations. It was fun to watch. So sorry to see it not even get started! Two shows is not enough to determine if it is going to make it.

How can FOX cancel a new show after only 2 episodes?? Are they nuts?!?! You have to give it a try and let is show for the entire season… If it still is not popular, then cancel it. Geez, Louise, do we have to watch another stupid not-so-real reality show? But then, FOX network is not my favorite in the first place. My husband and I would like to know how the Lonestar characters get out of their predicament.

Very sad. I too was planning to Tivo the season and was very diapointed to find out the show was caneled. True the show wasn’t reality TV, a Texas CSI, a medical drama, or another not so funny comedy, but that is what made the show so appealing. Should have given the show more time to prove itself. Ever heard of word of mouth marketing?

I am almost over TV everytime there is a good series it disappears. Lone Star had appeal, with great actors; and a different story line that was interesting. After the first show my husband and I said this is a keeper and put our DVR on to record as a series. If you say it did not meet ratings well give it a damn chance I told several people to check it out it is not on your major networks like therefore, not everyone saw the pilot. Major network use advertising as propaganda we are pitched heavy on network shows… Read more »

I thought this was a great show. I am so disappointed that it was canceled. I think this show made people uncomfortable because of the taboo storyline; cheating and taking peoples money. The swindling aspect probably hits a little too close to home in the wake Enron and other companies like that. You are supposed to like the guy, which I did, however, I can see how it would make people want to tune out. I think people most likely wanted to like the show but felt guilty. I hope they bring it back, or at least finish the season… Read more »

I loved this show! I cannot believe it was cancelled so quickly. I really hope this show will be picked up by some other network that actually knows greatness when it sees it.

I am very sad that they canceled this show. I was searching for it on my TiVo to record and I couldn’t find it anywhere, only to be disappointed when I went online to find out it was canceled. I don’t know why they wouldn’t just give it a shot, only 2 episodes isn’t enough to establish a real fan base and I think there are a number of people out there who would really like this show. There are several other choices that could of been made prior to just canceling it. I hope that somehow they will air… Read more »
