At the start of the season, we wondered which new NBC medical drama had the best chance at survival — Mercy or Trauma. It was hard to decide but now, they’ve both been cancelled anyway.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The medical drama got off to a pretty poor start last September, attracting a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. Unfortunately, viewership fell even lower from there.
Despite the ratings, NBC ordered a full season of episodes, likely because the network needed the original programming. Though NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad said she liked the show creatively, she noted that the show’s ratings had to improve for it to survive.
The ratings didn’t improve. The most recent episode attracted only a 1.1 rating in the demo and 4.01 million viewers.
To no surprise, the Mercy TV show’s now been cancelled. The 22nd and final episode aired last Wednesday, May 12th. Unfortunately, it wasn’t intended to be a series finale and didn’t wrap up the show.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Mercy won’t be back for season two? What would you have liked to have seen happen?

Did anyone at NBC ever consider it wasn’t the shows fault it drew too little in the way of viewers? I think everyone is just becoming weary of NBC period. People….MIX IN A CLUE. STOP playing musical dramas. Trauma was a complete yawn after the first episode. Mercy had excellent chances if you gave it another season and hopped up the hype like ABC does for Grey’s…. I think I may have waited a year or two, however, to launch another medical series after ER left the air. Anything will pale in comparison so soon. The one thing I can… Read more »
Loved this show. NBC scheduling and promo fatality.
I am extremely disappointed in this network….Mercy was one of my favourite shows and I looked forward to watching it every Wednesday…I am sooooooooooooo upset it’s not coming back 🙁
I, too, am disappointed. This was the only NBC show I watched. What’s crap is that nobody seems to care about nurses, every show is about doctors! I’m looking forward to the return of Nurse Jackie (May 2011). I don’t think this show was given a fair shot, and I agree that it’s ridiculous the crap TV gets to stay. Very disappointed NBC!
Boooooooo this was the best new show last year. Again! You guys cancel a great show.
This sucks this was the best show since ER….now what? I guess I will read..Bring it back! cancell stupid shows instead! how many times do we got to watch reality tv? GRRRR I’m just sick!
Very disappointed as well. Both Mercy and Trauma were the only 2 NBC shows that I have watched since ER as well. Due to my work schedule I was unable to watch most of the airings but had to catch up online. Those were the best two shows I enjoyed last season and I’ve been waiting all summer just to find out they’re cancelled!
If you knew the show was going to be cancelled you could have left it off better. I found the show interesting and characters unique. Very disappointed. Maybe a person shouldn’t watch a series until it makes it to at least a second season. This was the only NBC show I watched since ER.
I’m very disappointed!! NBC didn’t even give the show time to develop.
Wow, I’ve been couldn’t wait for the fall previews of Mercy and was wondering why I didn’t see any…..didn’t know the show was canceled; big mistake, great show – one of the better ones on TV today. I guess it wasn’t sexy enough to keep on.
I am livid that this show is not coming back!! It was well written and outstanding acting; this network just keeps shooting itself in the foot!!
I really am sad that Mercy is not going to have a season 2, me and my husband loved the show. I hate that you get interested in a show and then its cancelled that has happened to a few shows that we watched.
NBC only wants reallity shows hey guess what I don’t watch them I guess you lost another veiwer.
I’m disappointed in NBC. I was a huge fan until I realized you cancelled not one but two of my favorite shows…..Mercy and Trauma. I guess I’m off to Greys Anatomy, Bones, NCIS and House…. Good luck NBC.
I am extremely disappointed that you cancelled this show, with such a cliff hanger. So unfair, for the 1.1 percent of us that did watch! Don’t we matter? Bring the show back! It sure beats some of the other junk like “minute to win it” . Seriously, that is bringing the ratings? Maybe I will write my book and take the Mercy story and create my own ending. How many will buy my book. Maybe I can become rich at your demise!
