Last week, FOX debuted a new game show for the holiday week called Million Dollar Money Drop. Is it a good investment for the network? Will it stick around or be cancelled?
On Million Dollar Money Drop, host Kevin Pollak starts out the game by handing over $1 million to a pair of contestants. To keep it all, they must answer seven multiple choice questions correctly. The couple can distribute their cash on more than one answer but must use it all. They lose whatever cash they put on incorrect answers and must watch as it drops out of sight through trap doors. The contestants get to keep however much cash, if any, they have after answering all seven questions.
The game show debuted last Monday to a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.31 million total viewers. It ranked in third place for the 8pm timeslot. The second episode aired at 9pm to a 2.0 rating and 5.33 million, still in third place. On Tuesday at 8pm, the third installment registered a 2.2 rating and 7.04 million. At 9pm, opposite all repeats, it dropped down to a 2.0 rating and 5.57 million viewers. On Wednesday, Money Drop fell to a 1.6 rating in the demo and 4.79 million total viewers. Thursday’s installment, per fast affiliate ratings, fell again to a 1.3 rating and 4.54 million viewers.
So far, the show has averaged a 1.8 rating and 5.43 million viewers. That’s not great but its not too bad either. The competition wasn’t as tough last week but there were also a lot fewer people watching network television. On the positive side, Money Drop’s season average is almost as good as Fringe and Lie to Me and is much less expensive to produce than they are.
It’s unclear how many unaired episodes are left but has several more scheduled throughout the month of January. If the ratings for these installments are solid, it’s a safe bet that FOX will order more. At the very least, it could be a solid utility player and fill timeslots as needed.
A sidenote: If you’ve been following the news, you know that an answer from one of last Monday’s shows has been disputed. As a result, contestants Gabe Okoye and Brittany Mayti have been invited to play the game again on a future episode. Presumably, for them to do that, the show will have to go back into production. The pair have yet to agree to return to the game.
What do you think? Is Million Dollar Money Drop worth watching? Would you keep it or cancel it?

This is an insult to anyone that still believes in FOX and seems to be an updated version of the classic movie Quiz Show. I say that the couple should sue FOX for much more and cut
a GREAT book and movie deal. If I were this couple I would not even consider going back on the program knowing that I was playing against a STACKED DECK!!
I say the public should BOYCOTT FOX and past the word to all as to what has happend
1. Boycott the show
2. Write the sponsors and let them know you will not buy their products until FOX does the right thing or till the sponsors remove their support.
3. Contact the executives at FOX and tell them what you are doing. Get them where it hurts-in their pockets.
I predict this show is doomed to failure.
I think it is pretty lame and a poor decision to not give the couple the money due to them. It is not like Fox does not make enough money to cover it. With the way money is still hard to come by and jobs are even harder to find, Fox should do the right thing and not be cheap about it. There is a lot of choices out there with dish and cable companies offering choices to watch. I will NOT watch the Fox network if they are not going to right a wrong the way it should be.… Read more »
Let them resume the game with the $800K at the same point at which they lost it
You people HAVE to give that $880,000 the couple acted in good faith and trusted that you are a reputable game show and answered the CORRECT question and the manner in which you are trying to cop out of paying is to “HAVE THEM COME BACK AND SEE IF THEY CAN LOSE EVEN MORE MONEY? I guess it doesn’t bother people like you much and that is very sad. You should do the RIGHT think and give them their winnings. I don’t use their names because I hope you know it so you can cut them a check for 880,ooo.oo.… Read more »
Why is there confusion, when the answer is obvious? Please do the right thing and give the money to the couple who rightfully won it. Obviously the show made a mistake and millions witnessed and several challenged the outcome. Fess us and take the high road. This issue won’t go away…do the right thing and maintain the viewer’s respect OR CANCEL THE SHOW…bottom line.
Absolutely…if the show doesn’t give that couple back the $80,000.00, I’ll NEVER watch this show again!! Even I knew post-it was around before the Walkman!!! A “do over” is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!!!
You people HAVE to give that $820,000 the couple acted in good faith and trusted that you are a reputable game show and answered the CORRECT question and the manner in which you are trying to cop out of paying is to “HAVE THEM COME BACK AND SEE IF THEY CAN LOSE A LOT MORE MONEYout by pulling this very
Drop the show. They have no integrity. They clearly cheated that couple out of their $800,000 winnings.
I say boycott the sponsors of the Million Dollar Money Drop until the show does the responsible thing.
Give the money or cancel
Won’t watch again until the see the money
The contestants deserve the money that is THEIRS! They answered correctly and FOX got it wrong. To offer another chance for them when they DESERVE what they won is Just WRONG on so many levels. Shame on you Fox. If you do not make it right, I will never watch this show. In my point of view and many others point of view, Fox robbed this couple of what is rightfully theirs.
I know there is an exception to every rule. NOW IS THE ABSOLUTE TIME TO MAKE THAT EXCEPTION. If you do not pay that couple the money you rightfully owe them, do you think anyone will actually watch your show again?!!! If I were you,I would not be worring about cancelling a game show, but on how many people will be boycotting your entire network. Do the right thing. Trust me it is going to cost you alot more than 800,000 if you don’t.
Can you please inform me when the show is going to have auditions. Would very much like to play.
p.s. love the game.
KEEP the show on!!
Who wants to watch dead body and cop shows anymore!
The show is fun, keep it going
