Last season was a mixed bag for NBC. Like the other broadcast networks, NBC is relying heavily on existing properties and last year even revived the previously cancelled Law & Order series (a good move, ratings-wise). The peacock network introduced just six new scripted series during the regular 2021-22 television season and renewed half of them. Which TV shows will draw big ratings and survive the 2022-23 season? Stay tuned.
NBC shows this season (so far): American Auto, America’s Got Talent, America’s Got Talent: All Stars, American Ninja Warrior, The Blacklist, Capital One College Bowl, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago PD, Dateline NBC, Grand Crew, Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge, La Brea, Law & Order, LA Fire & Rescue, Law & Order: Organized Crime, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Lopez vs. Lopez, Magnum PI, New Amsterdam, Night Court, Quantum Leap, That’s My Jam, The Voice, The Wall, Weakest Link, The Wheel, and Young Rock.
There’s lots of data that NBC execs look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but the ratings are typically the biggest piece. Here’s how the network’s 2022-23 TV shows are doing.

Some notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same-day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually. While these numbers don’t include further delayed or streaming viewing, they are a very good indicator of how a show is performing, especially when compared to others on the same channel. There can be other economic factors involved in a show’s fate, but typically the higher-rated series are renewed and the lower-rated ones are cancelled.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Older viewers also matter but younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are therefore harder to reach. Delayed viewing matters more and more these days (if commercials are watched) but live viewing is still advertisers’ ideal.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Are you surprised by any of the ratings? Which 2022-23 shows should be doing better? Which NBC series do you think will be cancelled next?
Magnum PI is a breath of fresh air for this network intent on setting all shows in urban wastelands. It’s a positive show where the stories are compelling and uplifting and the cast really shows that they love their craft. NBC has mishandled things by parking the show on Sunday and failing to secure past seasons for streaming. NBC, look in the mirr-it’s your own fault if this show didn’t meet your expectation. Bad night, no deep streaming catalog, and airing as 2 short seasons was all your doing. Fix your mistake and bring it back.
Magnum PI is Entertaining show and I love all the characters. By changing networks, viewers have probably lost this Tv show!
Hope MagnumPI is renewed early and for many more seasons
PLEASE KEEP THE SHOW ITS GREAT SO ARE ALL THE ACTORS. GOD BLESS.
So glad to finally have Magnum P.I. back! I watched all episodes last night and look forward to Sunday TV again. Great to have the cast back and plenty of excitement ahead. Thank you NBC!
I miss all those NBC shows that I use to watch on HULU and now they want you to sign up for Peacock. All these Networks are getting too greedy but at least CW is free so far. I wish I kept my Dish which I cancelled last November to save money.
Ouch, One Chicago. While they still won the night, those are not good numbers in comparison to the ratings they usually put up, especially with their season premieres. Chicago P.D. lost 1M viewers between last season premiere and this one. It hit a demo low. And even the steady Chicago Fire dipped as well. They usually dominate, but they just barely beat everyone else out this time. The franchise is finally showing cracks in the armor. And, I say this as someone who loved all three season premieres. Their 3 season renewal expires after this season, and NBC is getting… Read more »
Law and Order original second year revival Look forward to seeing it every Thursday so good juicy and never missed any episode of it. Enjoy it and love it all episodes. Please reconsider in boost your number ratings.
Reconsider in boosting the ratings numbers? So you want them to make up phony numbers to try and make the show look better than it really is, in order to keep it on the air?
